CHUPICUARO Pre-Columbian MEXICO head EFFIGY 400 BCE -100 BCE preHorizon FRAGMENT
This ancient antiquity is a Chupícuaro head fragment from a Chupícuaro fertility effigy. I bought this in San Miguel. Mexico( located in the far eastern part of the state of Guanajuato) at an estate sale in the early 1970s when I was living there during the summer. The effigy fragment still has remnants of red paint. The nose and mouth. And left side are broken off. It measures 1 ½ x 1 ¼ x ½ inch depth. Stand not included. There is also glue residue on the back as the fragment as it was once attached to a velvet backed display case. Chupícuaro(a pre-Horizon culture) fertility effigies were placed into the dirt by a Chupícuaro farmer during the planting season to appease the goods to insure a bountiful harvest. Subsequently. The free encyclopedia The Chupícuaro culture was located in the mountains of central Mexico and is named for the area in which the artifacts have been found. It is an important pre-Hispanic archeological site from the late pre-classical or formative period; located west of the Mexican Plateau. On the hills nearby the Lerma River and its tributary Coroneo or Tiger River; which currently under water because of the Solis dam. Just 7 kilometers from Acamaro in the Guanajuato State, near the Michoacán State border in Mexico Little is known about the history of this site. And it was not until 1946, due to a dam construction, that the first explorations were performed, discovering pottery objects and tombs. The place is currently below dam water, although there are surrounding areas still being explored. According to several sources. It is believed that this settlement developed between 500 BC and 300 AD, although some scientists suggest an older development, as far back as 800 BC. Establishing a firm chronology for Chupícuaro has been very problematic. Due to a lack of stratigraphic excavations and reliable C 14 dates.

Pre-Columbian MEXICO fertility EFFIGY head FRAGMENT
This ancient Pre-Columbian head is a fragment of a fertility effigy from Mexico. It was given to me by a friend who was the former assistant to Alfred Barr at the Modern Art Museum in NYC and was a former curator at the Ringling Museum of Art. The terracotta effigy fragment has a grey patina as it was on the surface of a planting field when the unknown tribe slashed and burned the field prior to replanting. It has an incised scratch on its cheek(I didn’t slash it) revealing its original terracotta clay body. It measures 1 ½ x 1 ¼ x 1 inch depth. Stand not included. I had my jeweler wrap i n gold wire. Then. I suspended it from a fine rolled leather cord. The cord fit up to a 16 in. neck easily. So it is unisex. A gold chain will work for this, too. Really nice. Pre-Columbian native American pottery circa 1452 AD
You are viewing two pieces of pre-Columbian American pottery from the Belle Meade excavation site. Horseshoe Lake. We obtained them over 30 years ago from the Memphis collector who excavated them. Over several years he personally excavated and amassed an important collection of vessels and objects of all types which attracted wide interest from scholars and collectors. The earth in this area(north Mississippi, east Arkansas, northeast Louisiana) has a clay component to it which preserved artefacts for hundreds of years, and he was able to excavate small intact pieces as well as large urns with original polychrome colors in pristine condition. The bowl is a serving bowl measuring 7 inches by 2.5 inches high. With decorated rim(one small chip as shown) The vessel is a drinking vessel from a child's burial site, measuring 5 inches diameter ... moreby 4 inches high. They were identified as relics from the Qapaw tribe of the Chickasaw nation, circa 1452 AD. The textile fragments with feathers were constructed into these dolls by the indigenous peoples, following what they found in those grave sites. They were constructed in the 1920’s, from ancient textiles from Pre-Columbian burial cloth textile fabrics and feathers. They are highly detailed, with embroidered faces, gauze headdresses and even arms on the end dolls. The Chancay culture pre-dates the Inca culture, and dates from the years 1000- 1476. Among Pre-Columbian Peruvians. The custom of including articles that were important to the deceased was a common burial tradition. Discovered with many interments are tool kits used by spinners and weavers, fishing kits, weapons, and other objects. The relationship of the deceased and these practical funerary goods is obvious. These accoutrements of daily life, as well as superb weavings, jewelry, and other personal treasures, were believed to have utility in a hereafter. But the relationship of the Chancay doll to the deceased is not as apparent. A first conclusion that these dolls were beloved toys of the deceased is easily challenged by a lack of variety of dolls discovered. Furthermore although Chancay dolls have been discovered in children's burials, most have been found in adult burials. In very good condition. Firmly mounted and highly detailed. Up for sale is a wonderful old likeness of Mayan King Pacal. I purchased it from a dealer at an antique market who got it from an estate. He said that the people who previously owned it traveled extensively and that it was old, but he did not have any additional information or exact age for this piece. It measures about 4 inches high and he said it is metal, bronze or copper. The inside is hollowed out and you can see some brown dirt like residue near the inside top(see image) It is darkened with some green verdigris and a little white encrustation. I've searched the Internet and I haven't ... morebeen able to find another one like it. Would make a nice addition to a Mayan or pre-columbian collection. Would look fabulous mounted on a pedestal! Only the Chimu elite. And higher religious elite members wore these exquisite items. Created in repousse technique with crustaceans at either side of the ornament. Thin and light in weight Silver plated with signs of corrosion. Silver and copper patina in parts. Some parts are bended/uneven due to age. Antique Pre-Columbian Human Female Effigy Pottery Rattle Nicoya Costa Rica
This is another super fine Artifact from my late step fathers collection. I believe it is a pottery rattle because it does rattle when you shake it& it measures approximately 3 1/4" tall by 3 1/8" wide from side to side& 2 1/4" from front to back of legs. There is a little damage to the left eyebrow of the face& some paint loss. But all in all it is in WONDERFUL condition& is sure to make an EXCELLENT addition to your collection. See pictures for consideration about it, is in great condition, with the normal signs of ages and patina of green color.Any comments or suggestions about it are welcome. 2. There is one piece loose.But is easy to repair, and have small vertical line(broken) of metal or plaque. 3. The patina is intact. And it is sold as is.It is made on copper in delicate laminate piece. 4. They are about of 6.0 x 4.0 inches and small disc are 0.75 inches of diameter approximately. Up for auction is a Pre Columbian? Colima Dog with corn in his mouth. This piece measures 6 1/2" tall x 4 1/2" long and 2 1/2" tall. There are no chips or cracks and the patina and overall condition is consistent. It has a very old look to it. It has a dirty look but I wiped it was a damp cloth and it dried back the same.
