Pre-Columbian - Chupícuaro 'wine bottle coaster'
Picture one of your favorite vintages sitting in this artifact and imagine entertaining your dinner guests with its history. As you reach to fill their glasses you begin to explain how your coaster is approximately two thousand years old and that the ceramic style is named after the village of Chupícuaro in the western Mexican state of Guanajuato. Located in the Guanajuato valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato and situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 500 BCE to 300 CE. During the same time Teotihuacán flourished. Fortunately excavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today. In 1949 the Solís Dam was constructed. This led to the flooding of the area which today remains under a lake formed by this act. Chupícuaro ceramics, formed without a potting wheel, ... moreelevate objects intended for daily use into highly sophisticated artistic achievements. You could go on to tell how this artifact was recently obtained from the estate of the late Willis Pratt, a career academic at the University of Texas in Austin and how Dr. Pratt owned a residence in Guanajuato and frequently visited Central Mexico between the mid 1930’s and mid 1960’s. During this period he amassed a fine collection of many pre-Columbian artifacts which he kept and displayed in his home in Austin. Guaranteed authentic. The style of this unslipped buff figurine is typical of Tecoman and the coastal area. It blends the typical coffee-bean eyes and facial features with a plate-flat body and string arms. The Colima would have placed such a warrior with his characteristic helmet with ear flaps, ornamented breechcloth, and weapon swung over his shoulder in a tomb either to protect or resemble the deceased. Pottery of the Inca culture in the form of a cup; interestingly processed with beautiful details. The wall of the cup decreases from top to bottom. But this is not visible externally, only to feel inside. The result is a very solid impression, but this is canceled for use by its light weight. Further, the inner end edge is provided with a 4cm wide groove so as to define the discharge amount in the width. The Incas ruled waterways with much effort, here they have even tried a very small, the amount of outflow to master that can only be described with WOW. To underscore the ritual nature of the Qero was fine, partly colored patterns, decorated. Simple cup hardly needed such a production effort. He knows it is OLD.but how old.he is unsure of.Pre Columbian or Post Columbian.I have asked some knowledgeable people in the field who have helped me identify artifacts in the past but they are stumped on this and another similar piece gotten from the same collector and also up for auction this week. This unusual piece stands 12" tall x 7.5" wide. He passes the"smell" test that is often a clue in identifying antiquities which when wet have that dank odor of old earth. He was in one piece just a few days ago. But I accidentally banged him and broke his leg off. What is underneath is a very porous, hard earth substance that appears to contain various particles of unidentified substances(terra preta perhaps?
