Vintage Viola da Gamba- 1960s German made. Beautiful treble size viola da gamba made in Germany during the 1960s during the resurgence of interest in medieval and renaissance music. Overall length of 25 inches with 14 inch vibrating string length(nut to bridge) This is the perfect size and shape to be played on the arm or as a viola da gamba. Similar to a vielle or medieval fiddle. This instrument has frets. Unlike most modern replicas, this one is fitted with steel strings, geared tuners and has metal frets. This gives the instrument a few advantages- metal strings are bright, loud, stable, strong, long-lasting and relatively inexpensive compared with gut. Depending on what tuning you use and your playing style, you can get this to sound like a vielle(with looser tension) or you can get a brighted sound if you use higher tension. German 5-String Violin styled as a Medieval Fiddle(viola da gamba. Vielle) Tied on frets. Beautifully made, original soft case, label shows makers name and date of manufacture as 1964. Amazing condition for a 49 year old vintage fiddle. It's basically a 5 string violin. So its perfect for a violinist or violist looking to perform early music. Tied on frets are period correct for medieval and renaissance music and let's beginners and amateurs get started quickly. Cosmetically very nice condition, but has scratches as shown in the pictures, but the finish and appearance are still beautiful for a 49 year old instrument. Excellent structural condition except there is a gouge where on of the bridge feet damaged the instrument top. It's not pretty, but I estimate this gouge only removed about 50% of the wood thickness at an isolated ... morelocation. There are no cracks and this defect has been stable for the 5 years I've owned the instrument. The top geometry is built as an arch, making it very strong, so this gouge is not an issue. I'm willing to offer the Buyer a warranty that this defect is not an issue and will remain stable for one year! Very typical of the arts and crafts/mission style popular around 1 910 or so. It is quite a unique pi ece and appears to be handmade. I have not been able to identify the pattern nor the ma ker. If anyone knows and cares to email me. I'd appreciate it. There were lo ts of hammered ... morepieces similar to this one made back then and they have been a mystery ever since. Many people believe that they came from the workers of Kalo/Lebolt/Mar shall Field silversmiths in the Chicago area. But I have seen some marked Galt and other names. I have been buying and selling these for years. I have one piece engraved"1909" so that helps pin down the era. They are almost always heavy and well-made. All have the hammered surface. Sometimes they are engraved with designs. Some ha ve strapw ork. Cut outs. Applied or bead designs typical of that style. Some are just marked"Sterling" and some are marked"925 1000" in ovals. Sometimes with the 1000 just looking like 000. Length: It is about 6- 7/8" long. Engraving: C" on the top of the handle(hmm. maybe I should keep it! Maker's marks: It is marked"STERLING" with no other hallmarks. Condition: Very good. It h as a bit of very light surface scratching and some tarnish here and there. Here is a Metal Battle Shield Medieval Reproduction Full Size Commercial lighted Sign NM in condition. It does not have a cord with it because it was hard wired. I did hook a cord to it to make sure the light still works. This shield is full sized and made of heavy metal. My guess is stainless steel. It measures 31 inches tall and 18 inches wide. It was made by a sign company(see Photos) for a knife& sord shop. It is a back lit sign and you will be getting some bolts that you can adjust how far out from the wall you want to be.
