This mace represents the earliest of flanged maces which were produced in response to the increased use of solid plate with mail armor. A blow with a ball head mace which made effective contact with mail was deflected by the solid plate surface. The addition of flanges. Substantial enough to dent the armor renewed the effectiveness of the blow. This example is forged and would have been mounted on a long wood haft for use on horse back. It dates to the period of independent principalities including Chernigov, Halych-Volnynia and Wallachia/Bessarabia between which war frequently broke out notably as the result of fortification of new alliances, sometimes against the Mongols. This auction is for a very rare and unusual medieval vellum pastedown w/ Latin notations in what appears to be at least two different hands. Germany, around 1500. The first line reads"Vir ti dat Leo pa Bos pi Aquila pea" with the numbers"28.16.24.21" above. Some scholarly research on the leaf had been initiated by a previous owner(this information will of course be included with leaf) with the following conclusions: Vir(que) refers to Matthew(abbrev. meaning Angel) Leo" = St. Mark(lion) Bos" = St. Luke(bull) and"Aquila" = St. John(eagle) It seems that the top row of numbers simply refer to the number of chapters in each gospel: Matthew(28) Mark(16) Luke(24) and John(21) The text on the remaining 5 lines is still not understood. RARE PEWTER WMF EPNS MEDIEVAL KNIGHT HEAD BUST INKWELL INKSTAND c1880-1918 SOLID SILVER POT A stunning WMF pewter knight head inkwell/inkstand with solid silver ink pot. With amazing detail& a very characterful. Almost mournful face. Helmet is hinged to back& lifts to reveal the knights face with ink pot to the top of the head. Unsure of what the face is made of due to the shiny silver/dark silver colour& orangey discolouration to the ripple of the chain mail style head dress. This makes me think it is silver plate& I have found one reference to this inkstand which states it is EPNS. Crossed pewter swords to the base. Unfortunately one has come away from the base as it was originally soldered on so could repaired quite easily by soldering it back into its original position. WMF in cartouche to the bottom edge of the base dates ... morethe inkwell between 1880-1918 so one of the earliest WMF marks. H&T anchor t lion mark(Hillard& Thomason Birmingham 1893 or 1918. Not sure which) to the solid silver ink pot which weighs approx. 16g. Not sure if this is the original ink pot as there is a bit of movement when in position but certainly doesn't look out of place if it isn't original. All the similar inkstands(not WMF) I have researched are damaged. Generally the feathers to the helmet or entire helmet are snapped or they don't have the swords present or have porcelain liners. Overall this knight is in very good condition. There is a slight mishapen area to the bottom edge of helmet visor, some minor age-related marks& the helmet hinge is ever so slightly loose but not damaged, just has a little bit of give from being opened& closed over the years. There is also some minor kinking to the edge of the ink pot rim. A rare& amazing piece by an extremely reputable maker. UK/International P&P is a signed for& fully insured service hence the price. A Late Medieval Music Manuscript, Gregorian Chant, Magnificent Illuminations
Auction description The musical content of this beautiful and ancient vellum manuscript leaf honors two saints of the church: the first two songs are for the evangelist Saint Matthew. To be sung on the day of his birth. The bottom one gives the beginning of a song in honor of Saint Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary. A translation of the first song reads like this: The mouth of the righteous shall mediate wisdom. And his tongue shall speak judgement. The law of God is in his heart. The chants themselves goes back probably to the eleventh or twelfth centuries; this folio sized leaf is several centuries old. In my judgement late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. I'm not enough of a scholar to be able to say with certainty where in Europe it was copied, but Spain would be a plausible guess. Besides the lovely and crystal-clear musical ... morecalligraphy. The outstanding visual elements are the two large, illuminated letter, O" and"I" just magnificent work in late medieval style with wonderful semi-abstract and vegetal patterns inside the letters, and the two smaller illuminated letters"N" and"G" They are all unusually good. Contemplating that elaborate"O" really puts your mind in a different place! The effect of this leaf on a wall is very strong because of the illuminations. It was my home library decoration for a couple of years, and I have loved it. Dimensions of the sheet are about 19.25 inches by 13.75 inches. It has been laid down onto a board. With the included mat. Dimensions are about 24.5 inches by 18 inches. Excepting the fact that it has been glued down, the vellum leaf is in very good condition, with only a little edge staining. It was really and truly used to sing from. You can see in the lower right corner where the monks who sang the music left their thumb prints as they flipped the page(originally from a large book) over. Click on the image for a detailed view. This leaf is from a medieval Antiphonal or Responsorial Manuscript. Of German origin, circa mid-fifteenth century, in Latin, on vellum(174x125 mm. The script is in a Monastic gothic hand and the music consists of six staves of four-lines each. Musical staves are in red ink with notes and text in black ink. The larger and more decorative initials are in red or red and black. A Responsorial is any psalm, canticle, or other sacred music which is recited or sung after a reading during the church service. Customarily, this occurs with a cantor or small group singing verses while the whole choir or congregation responds with a refrain. Traditionally, Responsorials are sung in Gregorian Chant.
