HUGE 18th-19th C. Japanese Samurai NODACHI 34 1/4" Blade Possibly a Korean Sword
Very large and massive Samurai Nodachi style sword. The type used by samurais against charging cavalry by cutting the legs of the running horses. It wear s a powerful slightly curved blade of the katana style but much more massive and thick. The blade exhibits areas of surface pitting, patina and oxidation. Nothing however goes too deep in to the steel. Massive copper habbaki at the base of the blade. The blade length is incredible 34 1/4" from the tip to the opening in habbaki. Huge iron tsuba and iron mounts to hilt and scabbard, bare of its wrapping. The hilt wrapping is made with bamboo or some sort of straw and is in good solid condition although showing age and wear. Very unique and rare size example, b y the size and furniture style it may very well appear to be a Korean fighting sword. This is a Japanese sword in honzukuri mountings. The blade is unsigned. Nagamaki-naoshi shape. Early muromachi period ca.1500 era or older made blade. The blade is in old polish, shows aged light stain on surface but no rust and in good condition. The temper line is gunome mix with suguha yakidashi temper pattern and has yakizume temper at the point. The forging grain is tight itame-hada and no forging flaw at all. The scabbard is black urushi lacquered wood scabbard with maple leaf motif silver gold kojiri. No dent and in mint condition. The handle is tight fit with shakudo fuchi/kashira and menuki. Tsuka-ito wrapping is no cut and no loose. The tsuba is mokko shape iron tsuba with nice patina. VERY NICE JAPANESE SAMURAI SWORD BLADE SHIN SHINTO
This is a very nice example of a Japanese Samurai Sword Blade which dates from the Shin Shinto Era. It wears a cutting edge that measures 26 3/4 inches in length and from tip to tip 35 inches in length. The blade remains in good. Healthy condition with no cracks, no openings and no bends, however does have a couple of tiny nicks to the cutting edge, and does boast a beautiful straight temper line which is visible and extends to the tip on either side. The wonderfully well marked tang wears one hole along with the signature that translates to"Gei shu ju Izumo Daijo MASAMITSU" see Hawley book P179 top of page Student of Motonaga) as well as is dated"Genji Gannen Junigatsuhi" which translates to"December, 1864" on the other side. Japanese WW II NLF officer's sword in 44 mountings, gendai "Nagamitsu"
This is a Japanese WWll Naval Landing officer`s sword in type 44 mountings. The blade is signed"Nagamitsu saku 長光作" Shinogi-zukuri shape. Nagamitsu was the warden of Okayama prison and teach the swords making to prisoners. Made swords during WWll time period(ca.1940) and cutting ability of his swords rank among the best produced by Showa period swordsmith, listed in John Slough's book page 123, 124. The blade is traditional hand forged, water tempered blade, in old polish, shows light stain on surface but no rust and in good condition. The temper line is wavy gunome-choji with nie(chrystal) active temper pattern throughout the blade and has deep temper at the point. The forging grain is tight itame-hada and no forging flaws at all. There is no bend. No nicks, no crack and cutting edge is sharp. The scabbard is ishimeji(sand) ... morefinish lacuered wood scabbard, no lacquer loss, no crack, no bend and in good condition. Kanezane's real name is Asano Shinichi. Born in 1910 in Seki city, Gifu prefectuer, made swords during WWll time period, listed in John Slough's book page 76,77,78,79. The blade is in original polish, shows aged light stain on surface but no rust and in good condition. Good condition and guaranteed original WWII Japanese Type 95 NCO sword that is complete with correct original scabbard. 27 ½” blade has original bright metal finish with a little scattered gray and has been sharpened. Edge has a couple of dings. Has a tiny Tokyo First Arsenal inspector character proof near the base along with a sharp clear serial number. Brass habaki has untouched patina. And tsuba retains much of the original black finish. Sword is marked on the fuchi with the Tokyo First Arsenal symbol and the Suya Sword Shop kanji manufacturer logo. This is a Japanese WW II Army officer`s sword in type 98 mountings. The blade is signed"Mantetsu tanzo kore 満鉄鍛造之" Dated"Showa Kinoe saru Haru(Spring, 1944) 昭和甲申春" with 連 stamp and セ六六五 serial number stamped on mine of the tang, shinogi-zukuri shape. The blade is in original polish. Shows light aged stain on surface but no rust and in good condition. The temper line is chu-suguba temper pattern throughout the blade and has o-maru temper at the point. The forging grain is tight itame-hada and no forging flaws at all. There is no bend. No nicks, no crack and cutting edge is sharp. The scabbard is heavy metal scabbard, shows tiny aged lacuer loss but no dent, no bend and in good condition. WWII Japanese Turk Naval Officer Captured Samurai Sword KAI Gunto Seki Signed
Up for auction is an estate purchase of a sword that was sold as a captured sword but I don't think that is the case as the marking on the Habaki TRUK(pronounced Chook) is probily a referance to the battle of Truk lagoon Operation Hailstone(known in Japan as トラック島空襲 Torakku-tō Kūshū. Lit. the airstrike on Truk Island" this was a massive naval air and surface attack launched on February 17–18, 1944 so not sure how that matches the 1946 date? maybe the guy was a member of J-force that occupied Japan from 1946-48 that would make the 1946 date make sense. and the reference to Tokyo may be where he acquired it. I'm not an expert on swords but did do some research and here is what I have gotten from those that know a lot more than me. Comments on the sword from another site: This is a KAI gunto sword. Not"samurai" but a naval officers sword. Pretty easy to ID as they pretty much all had the Japanese flag style sunburst tsuba and a tsuka with black same. The writing interpretation is: 関Seki 住Ju 森Mori 俊Toshi 冶Haru 作saku Seki is the province where the sword was made. Mori Toshiharu is the swordsmith name and saku just means made by. Regarding the jū kanji; On page 40 of John Slough’s book“An Oshigata Book of Modern Japanese Swordsmiths 1868-1945” he shows an oshigata that has a Jū kanji virtually identical to this nakago. Also on page 40 is an oshigata translated as Seki jū Mori Kaneharu. While the kanji does not look like a typical jū kanji. It would appear that a translation of this nakago could well be Seki jū Mori Toshiharu Saku My guess is the tsuka is not original. It looks way to good condition compared to the rest, so I suspect it was rewraped or completely replaced. the ito and same just look too good condition in comparison with the rest, so I suspect this part at least was redone. Here is a very nice and long WW2 Shingunto Army officer sword mount. The whole mount from end to end measures 42" 106.7cm) It was made for a big long sword. It also has the wood Tsunagi(professionally done in Japan) of the exact shape and size of the blade that was once housed in this Shingunto Koshirae. The wood Habaki can also be detached like the real sword. The Tsunagi nagasa is: 28 5/8" 72.7cm) There a few parts with paint chipping and a smal dent but. The overall condition is nice and clean. Japanese WW II Army officer's sword, hand forged "Kanenori", tassel, 27+1/8"
This is a Japanese WWll Army officer`s sword in 98 mountings. The blade is signed"Noshu Seki junin Kanenori saku 濃州関住人兼則作" Dated"Kigen Nisen roppyaku ichi-nen 紀元二千六百一年(1941) shinogi-zukuri shape and 昭 inspection stamp on the tang. Kanenori's real name is Kojima Taro. Was born in 1907 in Seki city, Gifu prefecture, made swords during WWll time period and after the war as a gendai sword smith, listed in John Slough's book page 56 and rated 1 Million yen. The blade is traditional hand forged, in oiginal polish, no rust, no scratch, no stain and in excellent condition. The temper line is wavy chu-suguba temper pattern throughout the blade and has deep o-maru temper at the point. The forging grain is tight itame-hada and no forging flaws at all. There is no bend. No nicks, no crack and cutting edge is sharp. The blade is ... moremounted in army type 98 mountings, scabbard is heavy metal scabbard, shows aged normal lacquer lacquer loss but no dent, no bend and in good condition. The handle is tight fit, tsuka-ito wrapping is no loose. No cut and in good condition. The tsuba and seppa are all original and no number stamped. The lock mechanism works fine. It came with blue/brown company grade sword tassel, no cut, no shrink and in good condition. The blade measures 28+1/16" tip to the guard, 27+1/16" cutting edge, 1+1/4" width, 7.5mm thickness at the notch and 41" in mountings.
