Scarce! Nice! Late War "Last Ditch" Japanese Naval Officer Samurai Sword Signed
Gentlemen. I really am having trouble putting this one up as I know I will regret it later! A SUPERB SECOND WORLD WAR IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY(STANDARD MODEL 1937) COMMISSIONED OFFICERS KAI GUNTŌ PATTERN TACHI TYPE SWORD AND SCABBARD MANUFACTURED BY THE TOYOKAWA NAVAL ARSENAL circa 1945 by Takeyasu. These late war"Last Ditch" Japanese Naval Samurai swords are quite scarce! The tang is arsenal stamped. The blade is still bright with a few small nicks on the cutting edge. The wrapped handle is in very good condition and has the later war non pebbled black leather base. The blade measures 25-1/2 long. The"shira-saya" style scabbard has the correct naval fittings and never had any finish or covering. It does have some kanji stamping/writing on it just below the upper fitting and what appears to be a company grade officer tassel ... moreof some sort on the upper fitting ring. There is a slight separation in the seam of the scabbard towards the bottom. Scarce sword! This sword particularly was well finished by swordsmith Yaketasu and shows his craftsmanship in the work he did in finishing filing the handle of the blade which is quite exquisite in my opinion. Straight hamon. Clean lines and retains very nice original polish. Two slight spots of aging on the blade maybe visible on picture 8, on the spots somebody lightly rubbed them leaving small scratches. Other than that it is pretty close to what it looked like when the Officer picked it up at the Base Exchange in 1945. Silvered habaki. Sword fittings retain much of gold gilt, missing sarute on top of handle. Handle goes together tightly and it is ready to cut the 4th of July watermelon if needed. The Toyokawa Naval Arsenal in Aichi prefecture produced swords for the Imperial Japanese Navy. A Naval Inspector working at the facility proofed/checked all swords and stamped those swords accepted into service with the Naval Anchor mark as seen on this swords haft. WWII Japanese Officer's Samurai Sword - Signed Yoshichika dated Feb 45 -No Res-
Gentlemen, WW2 gunto mounted Showa era sword in Japanese officer koshirae. This blade was made by‘Yoshichika’ Whose real name was Yoshioka Tetsujiro( 吉岡 鉄次郎) He was registered as Seki Kaji smith on the 26th April 1943 and was one of the approximately 200 Seki based smiths listed in the Seki Tanrensho(directory of Seki swordsmiths) John Slough’s book‘An Oshigata Book of Modern Japanese Swordsmiths 1868-1945’ lists him as Yoshichika. The shinogi-zukuri shaped blade is marked on the obverse face of the haft(nakago’ with the name Yoshichika( 吉近) The reverse face of the nakago is marked with the white painted Japanese numbers 4731 which are thought by collectors to be warehouse numbers and the date of forging which was Feb 1945. The other side has the Yoshichika's kanji characters. No arsenal stamps. The tang also has 3 drilled holes and one ... morepartial. Blade is in wartime polish with a tight hada and straight hamon. Blade has a few age spots as pictures show. No openings or defects and really no edge nicks. The only thing I can point out would be a micro blunting of the extreme tip probably from bottoming out in the scabbard. It is not noticeable. Late war Tsuba. All 5 correct spacers. It also has sarute or handle loop on top which are usually missing. All original screws on scabbard fittings, scabbard& handle fittings retain 85% paint/plating. Tsuba about 65% of gold gilt. Handle looks to have been repaired at some point in history as bottom third of the(same) or shark skin is different than the top 2/3rds. maybe at the end the shops were out of material and were working with what they had left? The handle I keep assembled loose when pegged. It seems too tight using a lower hole for a tight fit. It seems to require too much pressure for a 70 y/0 relic. I use the upper hole and will ship it in the looser configuration. The wartime hand forged blade on this sword is very good example of the type. ANTIQUE VINTAGE SWORD POSSIBLY A JAPANESE SAMURAI SWORD KATANA
This sword belonged to my late father. I've known it my entire life(over 40 years) but know nothing else about it-including it's age and country of origin. I believe that it was inherited by my father at the time of his father's(my grandfather) passing. I do know that my grandfather spent time in Japan during the late 1940's/ early 1950's(he was involved in early government dental programs. Similar to an ambassadorship) so it's possible that he may have picked it up then. I have looked and have found no markings to indicate maker/date/location. I've taken several pictures. Including many that I could not fit in the listing, and would be happy to send them to any of you who are interested. There are pics of the blade, too, which appears to be in pretty fine shape(my non-expert opinion) with the exception of one ... morearea which has a blemish-don't know if it's rust or some other oxidation but the pictures do represent it well. The end of the sheath/scabbard(which appears to be leather with some wood at the opening) shows some wear, too, and I also have pics to send if you'd like-just ask! As I said before. I know nothing more about this sword than what one could gather by looking at the pictures. Estate sale item. I know nothing about swords. However I will try to answer any questions you might have. The sword is 39 inches long. It is 28 1/2 inches from the guard to the point. It is sharp and feels nice and tight. There is some Japanese writing on the blade I tired to show it in my pictures. There is also a number on this sword 18955 looks like a serial number. A small button on the handel must be pushed to release the blade. The sword locks into place. I am not going to take it apart so please don't ask. I don't want to damage anything. There is no reserve and a low starting bid.This is a true auction. Let the free market decide what this sword is worth. If you have a low feedback score don't even bother to bid. I will not sell you this sword. I am having to relist because of a no payment from the zero feedback person ... morethat won the auction last time. The blade is in Excellent condition and the fittings are in Very Good condition. It is a healthy sword and has a blade length of 25.5 inches(65cm) The hada is a tight and visible itame. The hamon is a peaked Mino-style gunome hamon that is present the length of the blade ending in a ko maru boshi. The tang is mumei. Or unsigned. The blade characteristically looks like WWII era Seki work. The mountings are Type 98 Shin Gunto and in Very Good condition. The tsuka is missing its wrapping ... moreand menuki. However the fuchi and kabutogane are present. The tsuba is classic WW2 with three accompanying metal seppa. The saya(scabbard) is painted green and in Minty condition. Showing no dents and retaining roughly 98-99% original finish. There is a locking mechanism and it works. The blade is in Excellent condition. There are no nicks along the edge. There are few areas of light surface and some slight scratches along the blades length. There are no major flaws like hagire. Overall. I think this piece would be a superb addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords. Terms and additional items: This item is original and not a knockoff or fake. DESCRIPTION: Antique Japanese sword WAKIZASHI with black lacquer saya. The blade is a KOTO period blade. Middle MUROMACHI(around 1450) Blade is Shobu-zukuri(Iris Leaf) shape. Probably reshaped from an old naginata. It has Masame grain and narrow suguha-hotsure hamon. The blade is tired from much polishing. But could be“touched up” The saya is made out of Black Mottled Lacquer. There is some damage. But could be restored. The tsuka is Dashi-zame(bare ray skin) style. The nakago has no signature(so called MUMEI) The blade is made out of TAMAHAGANE. The metal(iron) that's been used in old Japan to make swords. Tsuba is from iron.
