The tall female statue stands 12" tall or 13 1/2" with base. There appears to have once been a bird on the top of the headdress but doesnt really distract from the statue. The Fisherman statue measures 7" tall and 8 1/2" with base. No Damage. The third statue of the"God of Knowledge" measures 6 3/4" tall and 8 1/4" with base. All 3 statues have Chinese markings/signatures on base. As well as on the figures itself. Again, see the pictures. I have no idea what the markings mean. Nor am I no expert in Chinese figures like these, as this was an estate find. With that said, based on my research, though, I believe these are from the 1950s-60s, ... moreand were made in Italy for the manufacturer Norleans. I believe it is actually made out of a resin material, but have also been informed that it may be ox bone. I could be wrong on all this, but this is what research led me to; again, I am no expert! Antique 1800's Boxwood & Brass One Key Flute Fife Ivory Bands w/Box No Reserve!
This auction is for an antique boxwood flute or fife with one brass key and ivory bands. The ivory is less than 5% of the total weight. This flute comes in its original marbleized box which I believe reads F Flute. 10 Yellow#761. I am not an expert in antique instruments so I am unsure what this label means. The flute is in good condition for its age, it is missing one of the ivory bands, another band is cracked, and there are a couple of shrinkage cracks to the wood. The string wrap is missing where the pieces connect. The rest of the flute appears to be in very good condition and I am sure the issues could be repaired. I would estimate this flute to date from the mid 1800's. There is no makers name that I can see but it appears to be a very high quality flute. Batak is a generic name used to describe the islands in the Sumatran region of the world. The Batak calendar is used to document tides. Fishing and other auspicious events of the year. The bone could be ox or water buffalo. Nevertheless. The crafter of this piece had a connection to the sea as one can tell from the scrimshaw motifs. There are two small holes opposite each other at the top of the bone(visible in several of the photos) This could have been to secure a lid; making this a utilitarian piece like a medicine or brush bottle. The pillowcase itself is 29" x 21.5" not including the lace edging) Lace is in excellent condition. Pigment, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 21.5 inches H. x 6 inches W. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Cracks an chips in base, Additional Information: A strong sculpture from the Senufo people of Ivory Coast(Cote ... mored'Ivoire) The art of the Senufo was some of the earliest recognized and collected in Europe. And French colonial authorities recognized the quality of the objects and brought them back to France. Soon after artists and others of the avant-garde began collecting Senufo art. This medium-sized figure, 21 inches in height, has all the hallmarks of a classic Senufo sculpture in terms of details and the facts of obvious age and use. Female figures appear during different ceremonies, and unless one knows the specific context of the figure it is often difficult to name the specific use and name of the figure. Figures such as this may have been commissioned by the male"Poro Society" or the female"Tykpa(Tykepa)Society, both which were concerned with initiations, funerals and social control. She may also have been a Yasungo, a shrine figure or one of a male-female pair representing the first couple known collectively as"Kasingele.
