This is a gorgeous antique 19th Century Japanese Blue and White Sometsuke Octagonal or Square plate that measures 11 1/2 inches on each side by 2 inches high. It was entirely hand painted in cobalt blue and it features a center landscape and water design bordered by a tight geometric floral design. The back side depicts repeating brush strokes. The condition is very good and its age is from the 1870's to 1880's(early Meiji era) The back of the rim has a few tiny areas void of glaze that originated when this plate was made(see photos) It also has a light brown spot on the left side. Description: This auction is for a large beautiful antique Imari porcelain bowl with a mark that I believe is Schoenau Bros. Germany. I found the underglazed blue mark in the Kovels' new dictionary of marks on page 131(lines) But the only difference is that this bowl has a European 7 mark at the other end. It should date to 1887-1920. The bowl is heavy, has pitting marks usually found in old Asian pieces. This was found at estate& I have left the sticker on the bottom so you can see that the seller was confused about the mark, so that you could also see the price the previous owner paid for it. The bowl measures approximately 3 5/8 inches tall. 9 inches wide straight across, corner to corner 10 1/2 inches. The bowl is in good condition for it's old age; no chips.
