This beautiful wall hanging of the Sun surrounded by birds and flowers is hand painted in the style of the Castillo family and may be one of theirs but as it is not signed. I can't be sure. This is a beautiful hand-made and lathe-turned contrasting grain wooden jardinière. It appears to be made from Spruce. It has a pine board base with three ascending rings of contrasting grain woods. The shape is beautiful and finish is fine. This piece dates to the‘50s. The woman from whose estate we purchase it had an extensive collection of interesting wooden items. The only“flaws” are small and appear to have been revealed in the wood when it was being turned on the lathe. Those spots were subsequently filled with some kind of wood-filler before the piece was finished. Please see the photos. It measures about 7 ¾ inches in diameter by about 5 ¼ inches tall. This Auction is for a Vintage German Hand Painted Folk Art Wooden Plate. The plate has the Historical Frankfurt Germany Opera House which is now the Alte Oper( Old Opera) It was inaugurated in 1880 but almost completely destroyed by bombs during World War II in 1944(only some of the outside walls and façades survived) It was rebuilt. Slowly, in the 1970s, opening again in 1981. I narrowed the date down on this plate to shortly after World War II. This plate is in Excellent Vintage condition with no large cracks or major damage. The plate does have some normal signs of aging and wear. There is some writing on the back. Looks like it is in pencil- please see photos. It was carved from two pieces of what is probably pine wood and heavily painted. Found on Cape Cod but no signature so I don't know who made it or when. There's a metal fitting on the bottom which can be placed on a stand. It is a replacement for what was a larger fitting at one time. Stand is not original to the piece. Measures about 9 inches x 27 inches and around 17 inches high without the stand. Some paint wear and soiling on the bottom; needs a more secure stand. The artist even cut out a handle on each end. As you can see from the photos, the artist also used an array of bright colors in his designs and then accented them with gold lines and a gold, scalloped rim. OUTSTANDING This is an antique and most unique folk art diorama model and oil painting. Depicted is a three-masted Norwegian schooner flying the Norwegian flag. A name flag(which has come loose) called DERFLAP. And a third flag marked"HBT 1869" There is also an unmarked flag flying from atop the third mast. This is remarkably rendered by someone of significant ability. Talent and skill. Not only is the model superbly done but the oil painting is also very nice. All of the sails and ropes are done in relief and actually stand away from the background nearly 1.5" The boat is also detailed and well modeled. The diorama is about 2 1/4" deep and entirely painted in oil to create both the sky and land mass background. Please excuse the glare on the glass in the full scale photo taken in natural light. Window light is reflected. ... moreThe dimensions are as follows: overall frame: 21 X 30 1/2" frame& diorama total thickness: 3 3/4" front of frame to wall depth) glass: 15 X 24 1/2" diorama depth: ~ 2-2 1/4" schooner: ~ 12 X 19" to the tip of the front prow) The frame is a magnificent gold cast plaster on wood. It really is very detailed and in beautiful condition as the photos will illustrate. We believe this folk art work to be from the last half of the 19th century and it is apparently unsigned. There are two condition issues to note: there is an area where the oil paint is delaminating from the board(2-2 1/4" line as shown) It hasn't separated and fallen away but it is lifted some and is pulled away. Secondly. The ship's name flag, DERFLAP, has fallen off of the middle mast and is laying at the bottom of the diorama as photographed. The area where the flag WAS located can be detected in the oil paint at the top of the mast. Both of these conditions are reversible. 1870s HUGE Folk Art Architectural Church Finial Primitive OAK Newel Post Cap
GIANT. Original, solid oak, beehive finial. Incredible primitive patina. Would also make a striking garden ornament. Salvaged from late, 19th century, Chicago church. To give a better idea of the grand staircase this was recovered from, I saved a piece of the original newel post that once supported it(last photo) Overall it measured over 7 feet tall! Now, this architectural gem makes a breathtaking piece of folk art. It proudly displays its age and history. Apparently when electricity caught on, someone added a newel post lamp on top to illuminate the stairway. Canvas has been painted with a colorful geometric design and still retains a majority of the paint. The fringe at the top was made by unraveling the canvas and knotting together sections of the unraveled thread. Canvas is amazingly still pliant. There is some leather and a nail missing from the bottom edge. Inside the bag is an assortment of items. Including: net mending tools, leather scraps, metal grommets, and old rope. The larger one has a painting of a ship, The Maine" The smaller one has a banner with the word Maine, an anchor, cannon, and the flag of The United States. The larger one measures 18 1/2" across, 14 1/2" wide, and 26 1/4" high. There is some paint loss. See pictures) The smaller one measures 16" across, 14 1/2" wide, and 25 1/2" high. Offering for bid a great powder supply horn with great carvings. This piece is approx. 17" long with a 2" acorn final. This large 18th century horn is in fine condition. Looks to be made from oxen horn? Has a great untouched patina, has many carvings over entire horn. A sailing vessel, a cross, couple of houses, trees, potted plants an old fort, diamonds and hearts and many cross hatches! This is the most carvings I have seen on any of these horns! and is still in great condition. This piece would add to any revolutionary war collections or folk art collections. The box measures 3" diameter and 1 1/2" tall. Weighs a mere two ounces. Nicely painted lid features a many-masted sailing vessel.
