19th C. Primitive Burgundy Wall Shelf, Early Folk Art Display
This primitive wall shelf appears to be quite old and dates from the 19th century. It is simply constructed of a solid and heavy wood and nails. The true color is a bit darker than it appears in the photos.more of a dark burgundy.my camera flash makes it look barn red. The overall dimensions are 24 5/8" tall. 19" wide, and 5 5/8" deep. The shelves themselves are 16" long and 5 3/8" deep. There are 9 3/4" between the bottom and middle shelf and 9" between the middle shelf and top molding with an additional 1 1/2" of height behind the front molding. I am not a paint expert however the burgundy paint appears to have quite a bit of age as it is worn and dingy. While I am unsure, the burgundy paint appears to be covering a darker paint such as gray or slate blue. I know the shelf is old as it is heavy for ... moreits size and the wood is cracked in areas from shrinkage. The worst crack is on one of the back boards and goes through the hanging hole, as shown in the photos. There are two holes in the back for mounting to a wall. There are some specs and smudges of white paint here and there which are also indicative of age. The nice overall size and shape are perfect for displaying your cloth-covered books or primitive toys. A beautifully glazed and thrown Art Pottery 6 inch tall vase believed to have been made in the Seagrove area of North Carolina. I think it is unmarked Jugtown but I don't think they left the mark off too many pieces. Possibly somebody who worked there. Salt glazed(Orangepeel) with a powdered sugar icing like glaze overtop. Bottom is unmarked. About 6 inches wide. In perfect condition with no chips or cracks. Believe to date to the 1930's era. When I found this I thought that it was paper mache. Looking at it closer. It appears to be made out of whittled balsa wood and painted. It is Charlie Brown and Snoopy glued onto a piece of board. The fire hydrant is an old plastic pill container. The board is 7"x3-1/2" Charlie stands 4-3/4" tall. I believe that it was a pencil holder for a desk. Whoever made it did a pretty good job. The 4 horses& stagecoach are primarity cut outthe horses have connecting harnesses of rawhide of plywood& painted all around, including"in" sides of the horses! Even the whells are made out of wood with laminated outsides. The coach has a tongue that actually turns a bit on the axle. The wheels turn; doors open as does the strong box on back open. The horses' harness is made of rawhide&wood dowel construction.The tongue of coach bolts to the harness center rod. Coach is complete with"brake! The 2 men are actually jointed at shoulders& hips& can move arms& legs a bit. Not pictured, but ... moreone"driver" carries a shotgun. So much work& thought went into the construction of this great set up! I wish I had room to display it, but I have to offer it for someone to enjoy.Everything was hand painted& finished with attention given to every detail!The entire display is a bit dusty& a bit scuffed from use. This has to be the most or at least one of the most popular designs since Mikasa has been exporting to the USA. My grandmother has a set of green Mikasa Dishes from the 40's and they are like new. Unbeleivable quality from this company. I think this set is around 30 years of age. NOTE: in the 9th picture a cup has a hairline crack in it and I believe it goes all the way through! Uniique hand crafted piece of Art. This is a piece that I had in my own collection and was purchased from an old collectors estate. It is signed by the artist. I am not able to read the artists name(refer to Photo) The piece is in nice condition but does have a few issues. There is a crack that goes across the neck. A few of the feather are bent and hanging and there is a drip of glaze that is down one side of the face. There are photos of all of these issue. I purchased this from an estate in the outskirts of Prattsburg. I would date the sign from 1890's to 1920's. Possibly original, and are tight with some loss to one seat(see photo) The decoration shows wear, marks, and scratches. I have sat on them but I would recommend occasional use only. Up for sale is a one of a kind Southern folk pottery vase or jar. This piece was found in Centreville. AL. It is probably from the early 20th century due to its arts& crafts style(or fancy ware as they call it in NC? but could be earlier because of the alkaline glaze inside. Later pieces had albany slip inside. It has a green alkaline glaze inside and out. It is 7.5" tall and 4.75" at its widest point. It weighs 2.2 lbs. It also has a shallow semi'pinch' In pic 7, I am holding it where they are and in pic 8 I tried to show the pinch. It is in great shape with no chips or cracks. HUICHOL WOVEN SASH - MEXICAN FOLK ART - ANTIQUE
This antique Huichol sash was purchased in Jalisco. Mexico and has been in our private collection. Size is 106" long not counting the fringe on each end and 4" wide and is much more impressive than the photos. Huichol art designed to sell to tourists can easily be found today in Mexican tourist areas like Puerto Vallarta and Cancun as well as in Santa Fe. New Mexico and beyond but antique sashes worn by the Huichol are not that easy to find. The fact that this one is missing some of the darker brown threads indicates it was worn a long time before being discarded. There are no holes. Only a few areas where the darker color is missing and the largest area missing the brown is about 4" long The design on this sash depicts the wet and dry season serpents that"wrap around the world. In the book, Huichol Art and Culture: Balancing the World" by the Museum of New Mexico Press, there is a photo of a sash exactly like this one on page 61 and the sash photographed there was made in 1934. This sash may be that old or older. Another photo of the same sash design is on page 113 and of it is said, Men's sashes are some of the finest examples of Huichol weaving, as double-weave technology is extremely difficult to master. The weaver must work with four different sets of warp threads and weave them into a balanced double cloth. Sashes represent serpents that coil around the body and become a permanent prayer for rain. Here is a Unique Black Folk Art Doll that is 14" tall. I don't know how old it is but I'm guessing she is somewhat newer. She h as a matching top and bottom pajamas. A Very Nice piece of Folk Art Applique Mola. I have owned it at least 25 years it had a red frame but that broke so I stored it thinking I would reframe it. Now we are downsizing for a move. I purchased it in a garage sale in Austin Texas many years ago. It is pasted very well to a 1/4" board it is tight. I can find no damage or stains. All hand stiched with mostly solid colors there are 3 pieces with paterns as shown in photo#2. I took a photo of the back board to show the yellowing from age. Vintage 1920's CG Conn 14" Maple Snare Drum, Rootsy Playable Folk-Art!
For your consideration is an amazing vintage piece of playable folk-art. A 20's C.G. Conn maple snare with wood hoops. This drum has a gorgeous patina mahogany stained finish and 14 lugs. 12 lugs are original single point, double tension with drum key rods, 2 are missing and have been replaced with thumbscrew single tension rods. The original hoop-mounted throwoff and butt are in place with original nickel snarewire over vintage calf head. CG Conn badge is firmly affixed. This drum is in what we would describe as"rootsy" condition. It is playable and modern heads can be mounted. The shell had multiple bends. Scuffs, and distortions in the wood from nearly 100 years of the lugs pressing against the outer ply(see photos) Despite this, the shell is generally in-round and structurally sound.
