This appears to me to be quite old with restoration done at some point to make it play worthy. The way you see it is the way we got it. Straight from the outbuilding storage. The pluckers are bamboo rake tines and are tuned by sliding forward or back under the big nail. It has a great sound and it is quite remarkable how closely it can be tuned. I believe that the original back may have been removed and replaced. Probably to access the lashing to replace it. When that was done I can't say, but I believe it couldn't have been done any later than the 1960's. Who knows on this one; I have never encountered another. Cigar Box Guitars and Banjos with any age to them are not easy to find. But I have seen more examples of those. This could be American or maybe from the Caribbean? Either or; it has some age to it. Well. Those are my thoughts and observations for what it's worth. It's a cool thing, is tightly strung and produces a great sound. Check out my! Folk Art - Antique Needlepoint Sampler -1881 - WEEKEND SPECIAL
FOLK ART- ANTIQUE NEEDLEPOINT SAMPLER* WEEKEND SPECIAL* This lovely Sampler is from 1881 and was created by E. Heine, original location unknown. It was framed in Cincinnate and based on the condition of the paper backing. It was framed a very long time ago. The paper is very fragile. BUT the frame and framing is still in excellent condition. This piece was obtained from an estate sale. I have seen dozens of good Samplers over my years and this is, by far. One of the best for color, clarity, and condition. The thread is carefully placed in the burlap style material and pulled tight. The overall color is still good and the layout is perfect. The Sampler measures 19" x 14.5" and weights about 4 lbs. This linen needle point sampler is beautiful. It is dated 1927 and it has a ship on it and also the words" A ship is a Breath of Romance That Carries us Miles Away. and under that is has the initials R.S.M. and then the alphabet under that and then the date 1927 under that. The fabric is in beautiful condition and has no rips or tears. But some of the lighter writing shows some fading, but it is still readable. The outer edges has a beautiful design of flowers and leaves in pink and green. It is in a lightweight black wood frame and on the back of the picture is a paper that says" Deane& Amoss, Books Stationary, 132 South Hill Street, Griffin, Georgia. It is 16.5" tall and 12" wide. I wish I’d had another witness with me the day I discovered this late 18th Century American schoolgirl’s embroidered picture sampler. But there were only the two of us wandering through the home, slowly, quietly and with no small degree of sadness. Although I’d been in the home many times, this day was the first time since the passing of a fascinating man who died too young. I was there to help his widow, a dear friend, make some necessary decisions. Even though she was there to witness the discovery, I still wish someone else had been there as well because it’s hard to believe. I guess I should first give you some measurements ... moreand observations. We’ll get back to the“event” in a moment. The work remains in what I believe to be the original frame. Overall = 19 ½” by 20 ¾” Silk picture“mounted” on board = 16 ½” by 18” The color have remained strong. And some areas of the embroidery still glisten and catch the light in such a way that a sub-amateur photographer like me has difficultly capturing the true hues. I’ll let you know if an image is way off. Most are pretty close. The embroidery was accomplished on silk using both silk and chenille thread. You’ll be able to see this materials in my close-ups. Interestingly. The young lady chose to work in about 20 sequins. You’ll see them at the woman’s neckline as well as on the shoulders, straps and belts of her man friend. I believe he is holding a sword in his left hand. Professional artists. Mostly unknown though some are either attributed or actually known, had completed the faces, arms, legs and feet before the silk to be embroidered was given to the young ladies. I removed the back. There is a round circle in it that you can see is empty, he had a round tin can that fit in there that he had painted black, but it got all icky so I discarded it. The back shows a long tube like thing that is where he kept his pencil. Vintage Russian Folk Art Babushka Wood Pyrography Figure RARE Up for sale is this Russian hand crafted pyrography wood figure of a little Babushka. She does not have arms or legs; just one solid piece of wood. The figure is also painted with orange colored accents. Purchased in Russia by my parents in the 1980’s. It features leaves, scrolls and c strokes in cobalt blue, green, yellow and terra cotta. The pattern is divided into 8 panels with alternating green and blue panels. It stands 6 1/2" tall and 5 1/4" wide. This is an older piece that was made in the 1940's. It is not signed. It is in very good condition with no cracks but does have a flake chip under the upper rim with a small piece missing on the outer edge(pictured) There are imperfections in the painting with skip marks and smudges. Here's a great. Vintage piece of original Ser Mel Mexican folk art. This cute paper mache bird is 9" high. He's hand painted and has lots of feather detailing. There's even a big, gold feather right above his beak. His tiny little feet crack me up, and this parrot leans waaay forward, probably looking for a cracker. This is a handmade wooden model of a lost historic building I designed and constructed to preserve the artistic and architectural diversity of American culture. The essence of each style is achieved by incorporating the most important details of each building's design. These intricate models are completely handcrafted in fine hardwoods to make a lasting statement for future generations to collect. TX, 1909-1955. C.H. Page Jr. Brother Tyler. Texas has had seven courthouses and each of these county seats has been authentic architectural expressions of their generations. The most grandiose and well built of them was the four-story sixth Smith County Courthouse which incorporated the eclectic styles of Beaux Arts and Neo-Classicism. Specially selected Elgin brick was used in construction which heightened the textural effect of the façade and was used to form pilasters along the sides of the building. There were projecting facades on all four sides crowned by highly decorated pediments and sustained by colossal Greed decorated columns. The roof. Covered with red terra cotta tile.
