Wow ~ old cabbage/butter crock. This is 10.5 lbs on my bathroom scale& 8.5" ID&9" OD there is a piece missing from the lid but still in great shape. The lid said 2 gallon. It does have a small spot on top of the lid that has the glazing off of it where the wire bale has snapped down on it over the years. It also has a few very small chips that is common with items of this type. Other than that it is in very good used condition. It’s Wire Bail is in good working condition. Vintage Stoneware Three Pound Salt Glaze Butter Crock
For your cosideration is a salt glazed butter crock of the three pound size. This crock does not have a manufacturer's mark on it. In 1894 a few of the stoneware manufacturer's started using white glaze instead of salt glaze; by 1902 salt glaze was a thing of the past. Salt glaze was made by shoveling salt into a kiln of unglazed stoneware when the temperature is well above 2000 degrees Farenhiet and the salt vapors adhere to the unglazed stoneware. Albany slip glaze was used on the inside of the container. Because with the container upside down on another container, salt vapors could not reach the inside of the container. This butter crock is slightly more than 4" tall and the bottom is approximately 5 3/4" in diameter. This butter crock has 0 cracks, however where the sides meet the bottom is a small chip; this chip is ... morebarely visible when the butter crock is placed on a level, smooth and firm surface. The Albany slip interior is flaked off in places, but most of the light colored places in the picture are from 0 or little glaze applied. Vintage, hand thrown earthenware French-style butter crock with hand painted details in dark green.The idea behind storing butter at room temperature in this type of container has been around since the Middle Ages and relies on water evaporation as the cooling method. More information on the history and how to use this piece can be seen below. Basically you put your softened butter inside the center core of the lid. Place a small amount of water in the outer crock, then place the lid on. It will keep fresh and spreadable for a week or two, except in room temperatures over 80 degrees. Lg. Brown and Tan Glazed Crock w/Handle and Lid
Cleaning out my cabinets and discovered this crock tucked away in a box. It measures 8" tall. 5' opening.6" total diameter of top opening.Excluding the handle, the circumference is 28"The handle is another 9" long and is 2 1/2 inches from the crock.There are no chips or crazing on this crock. It can both serve as a jug or a storage crock.It weighs about 6 1/2 lbs as is before packaging. I have had it now for well over 10 years and it was originally purchased in upstate NY at a tag sale. It really is a nice looking piece.

It measures 6" tall and 5" wide. The only issue is that the bottom of the lid has a small chip in the bottom side. I almost didn't even notice it. It comes complete with the hanging wire.
