Victorian Brown Saltglazed Stoneware Crock Pot/ Storage Jar/ Vase C1880 This is a saltglazed stoneware kitchen storage jar dating from between about 1860 and 1900 with a nice even brown glaze and a band of incised lines on the side containing a pattern of impressed stars. Hearts, triangles, dots, squares etc, that looks a bit like hieroglyphic writing but in fact it is in a continuous spiral and would have been applied with a roller. This one is in fairly good shape. There is a large chunk out of the edge of the base that looks like a manufacturing flaw, and two other post production chips on the base, These do not affect the strength of the pot or stop it being watertight. On the rim there is again a bit of glazed over damage, and one very tiny chip. You often find these manufacturing defects on these salt glaze jars, as they were not fine ... morechina but quite utilitarian objects, so slightly damaged ones were not discarded on the production line, as would have happened with a porcelain teacup, for example. As it is quite decorative. This jar could be used as a flower vase, or it would be great for keeping those kitchen utensils under control. It is stamped in cobalt blue with the number 2 above"Bangor Stone Ware Co, Bangor Maine" Two drops of glaze from the manufacturing process. As well as several light brown drops from the manufacturing process, can be seen in photographs#1 and#2. A small, shallow surface flake on the outside of the lip near the handle can be seen in photograph#4, along with a few insignificant surface hairlines. An additional surface hairline on the outside of the lip can be seen in photograph#5. A 3-1/4" long surface hairline can be seen in photograph#6. A very small chip on the base can be seen in photograph#8. The photographs show that the jug is in good overall condition. The open salt glazed Stoneware Crock is stamped with OTTMAN BRO'S over FORT EDWARD. NY over a compact tight cluster hand slipped blue scroll coil spray dotted leafy floral cluster typical of slip cup decoration(slip is liquid clay) that looks like two google eyes. The decorations sits well ... moremid front to the piece and shows nicely in overall balanced scheme to the viewer, this one had some thought exercised during manufacture as so many other finds are simply routine, unimaginative, and in some cases, downright hurried and sloppy! The molded rim ring is thick, well formed and strong, and left and right ear lug handles are sound, tight, easy grip, deeply formed, and attached firmly no issues. This is a clean nice stoneware example for anyone's proud display collection. Unmarked to capacity, I would say it is best equivalent to just about 1 1/2 gallon size. Condition Report: Very sound. Monmouth Pottery Western Stoneware Crock Butter Churn Illinois Antique Complete
Being offered is a very hard to find antique. Hand turned Monmouth Pottery Company pre Western Stoneware 5 gallon butter churn complete with lid and wood dasher. This is an early. Hand turned salt glaze churn with an albany glaze interior made just prior to the bristol glaze and also prior to when the company started stenciling USA on the front of their pieces. The stenciled markings are pretty bold and complete on the churn. There is what is called a turkey drip below the stenciled Monmouth. Which is just some of the albany glaze from the interior that dripped out onto the front adding to the character of the piece. The lid is a perfect fit and is guaranteed to be a lid from the Monmouth Pottery factory. As it is a perfect match for the lids that are found in the Monmouth Western Stoneware Book on pg. 19. The wooden dasher seems to be the ... moreright size for churn and is an old dasher(close up photos included) Absolutely no repairs have been done to the lid or to the churn. The churn is nice and solid. It has a few tight crow's feet in the center of the body of the churn that do not touch the rim nor the bottom. Only one of them show up on the inside, about 2" can be seen inside on the albany glaze. There is also one thin chip on the inside of the rim and one small rough spot on one of the handles. The lid has the normal factory imperfections that include glaze misses and glazed over imperfections. And a few tiny nicks but no cracks and no hairlines. There are 12 photos included and all questions are welcome. PLEASE NOTE: To arrive safely. These pieces will have to be packaged into 2 separate boxes. This crock is an early version of stoneware crocks produced by the Nelson McCoy Sanitary Stoneware Crock Company. This is a 4-gallon crock with no chips or cracks noted. It is very nice. While researching this piece I found the following article describing a nearly identical crock at"The clover is one of the earliest known marks of the company. Along with the other markings shown above. The first three markings were typically incised, or cut into the bottom of the clay body, whereas the clover was stamped on with blue ink. This particular blue marking was stamped on. The M stands for McCoy, and the number denotes the size of the crock in gallons. Vintage Blue Crown #3 Gallon Crock with Lid (Brown strip across top- different!)
I got this at a clean smoke free collectors auction. This is a vintage crock. There are a few minor cosmetic conditions but it displays VERY very well! The lid fits perfectly and is in good vintage condition. There are a few hairline cracks. On the bottom and and a bottom edge(see pics#4-5) The bottom hairline crack does go through to the inside but it is still very solid and not going to break unless you drop it of course: There is also a chip on the top edge(see pic#3) There is some milk white splash on it which you can see in the first pic but I'm confident you can clean that off if you want without damaging the crock finish. This vintage 2 quart West Bend stoneware crock features a brown and yellow wooden fork and black measuring spoons on a white/eggshell stoneware background. The crock has a 7" diameter and is 5" tall not including the lid. The West Bend name and USA appear on the bottom. The crock comes with the original 8" Heat-Rite hot plate and plug. The crock and lid are in good to very good used condition with no cracks. Chips, or crazing. Antique Cobalt Blue Decorated Stoneware Crock: J. Fisher, Lyons NY dragonfly
For your consideration. We offer this 3 gallon, 19th Century stoneware crock in very good, well preserved condition. Stamped near the top is"J. Fisher, Lyons, NY" along with a large number"3" which was hand applied in cobalt blue. This piece dates somewhere within the last quarter of 19th Century and has a cobalt slip-trailed dragonfly decoration below the signature. The clay used to make this jug was rich in iron which is why it has an earthy, orange coloring. There's very minor glaze wear around the inside of the opening rim along with a few flecks/tiny chips, the interior of the crock looks virtually mint. On the exterior, there's an old, thin, darkened hairline that's between 1/4" and 1/2" from the bottom and travels almost halfway around the crock. It's tight and doesn't appear to go ... moreall the way through to the interior walls. Also, there's a very faint line to the right of the dragonfly that you can barely make out in photo number 8. Again, we checked the interior with a bright light and don't see it. We do our best to disclose flaws and provide detailed information. All our items are returnable within two weeks, no reason needed anyway but these hairlines are not structural threats. There's no chips or chunks missing out of the bottom rim and no pits on the sides. As the pictures show, it's a handsome old crock that displays very well. Found just this week, this 3 gallon stoneware crock is a rare piece of Americana from Western New York State that we offer to the highest bidder without reserve! Good luck!
