4 Vintage Stoneware Crock with Wire Bail. All measure about 5.5” tall including the wire bail and 3 1/4" diameter at the base. One of the brown lids looks like it has been glued. Otherwise no chips, cracks or dings on the outside and the wire bails work as expected and are in overall very good vintage condition. On offer is this crudely manufactured and printed. Antique ceramic"Holloway's" quack. Medical/pharmacy ointment pot/jar. The jar's original contents were used as an external kind of"cure-all" as detailed by the numerous exaggerated claims on the wall of the pot(see pics 3& 4) Thomas Holloway became a very rich man through the world-wide sales of his numerous"medicinal" cures and ointments starting in the mid 1800's and continuing through to the early 20 th century. He marketed his products very skilfully. And these little pots were exported to all the British colonies and to United States as well. The pot is in good shape. Elaborately Decorated 3 Gal. Remmey Baltimore, MD Stoneware Crock Jar Pot
Up for your consideration is a scarce 3 gallon Remmey pot made while potting in Baltimore. MD. This piece is probably around 1840.I'm saying Baltimore because he used the same decoration on a few water coolers at the time and the collar and heavy lug handles look more Baltimore than Philadelphia, PA but it could go either way. Some experts could probably tell one from the other. The crock is decorated with large vertical floral designs front and back with cobalt brush work to the handles ends and hanging flowers below the lugs. It is 13 1/4" tall.9" on the top.6 1/2" on the bold footed base and 34" around the ovoid middle. There is a flake off the rim and a tight spider hairline coming up the the base 3 1/2" The crock is a sound as from the kiln. The lid has slight chipping in the center where the closing device touches. Additionally there is a very small chip on the outer edge of the crock. This is a very early 1920's primitive stoneware crock bowl. It has a heavy brown glaze. You can see it was hand turned. 10 1/4" wide and 5" tall. It is very heavy. There are no chips or cracks but there may be a pop in the glaze. The edge of this bowl has a nice design. All the bowls I have listed came from a farm in rural Pennsylvania. Chips, or repairs. sounds good when lightly tapped, does not thump which would indicate hairline cracks. There is crazing inside lid as shown. Wild roses on lattice light to medium blue painted on soft white glaze. SALT is done in cobalt blue. great pattern. See lid also is matched and has lattice and roses. I was asked to add more photos of lid, now added 12 photos. There are flaws in the mold and paint as shown. All angles in photos enlarge. I see nothing distracting. And flaws such as this are common and normally always found on this type of vintage stoneware pottery Approx 6" across the top OD. 4" tall without lid in place and also not including back wall mount part Unmarked. A antique Thomas& Bro Stoneware brown glazed Salt Crock. This item was made in Huntingdon Pa between 1871-1878. A scarce example of Central Pennsylvania Stoneware. It is 5 3/4" high and 4.75" in diameter. The condition is very good. There is a tiny chip and hairline on the lip, could be in the making. The wording on the tan section is Mile End Distillery Co. Ltd. 86, Mile End Road, E. 2. Overall the jug is very clean and in very good condition, the only flaw I can see on it is a hairline crack on the back side(see photo 4) I do not know if the crack goes all the way through, or if is just in the glaze, but it does not take away from the appearance of the item. This listing is for an extremely Rare. Especially in this condition, 100 year old plus 1 gallon Crock Jug marked"W.T. C.D. Gunter Liquor Dealers Jack Daniel's No. 7 Whiskey 205 Broad Street Nashville Tennessee" It's my understanding that W.T. C. D. Gunter were the first Liquor Distributors for Mr. Jack Daniel. This Jug is from the 1890 to 1910 period. There are two fairly large chips under the bottom but they are thin chips. There are 4 images to show exactly what they look like. NO other cracks and no other chips of any significance. The neck and finger hold are both very nice as you can see. It has weathered the test of time very well for it's age and there's no telling what it's been through. It's my understanding that they were returned to the distributor and refilled many times. The metal hinge end of the lid is stamped Pat Pend 400 W. Kinzie Chicago. This address reflects the changes that were made to Chicago's street numbering system in 1909. The crock is no earlier than that year and probably dates from a few years later. The address is now part of the Merchandise Mart complex on the north side of the Chicago River, west of Wells Street. The crock itself is unmarked as to maker but Red Wing is the probable ... moremaker. Condition: Surprisingly good. The crock has one rim chip. No cracks. There are glazed over mold pulls on the encircling ring. Interior is clean with light stain rings. The plate glass lid, one chip, flea bites on the beveled edge, fine scratches. The metal hinged opening mechanism is fine, age darkening to the nickel finish is all to report. It unhooks from the side mount and a screw can be loosened to remove the glass. The rubber gaskets have dried out and the large one under the hinge has lost half its size. None of this affects the appearance or use of the crock. Dimensions: The Crock. 8" tall, 15 1/2" maximum diameter, 17 3/4" wide at the metal lid mounting. The Plate Glass Lid, 13 1/2" X 13 1/2" Weighs a whopping 20 pounds, 10 ounces. It will be disassembled for packing, the three elements separately boxed and then placed in the shipping carton. Please take a good look at the photos as they constitute the rest of our description. The crock has one chip along the edge and signs of red paint that looks to have been rubbed on it. This can be removed easily, it does scratch away. The piece measures approximately 3 5/8" tall x 5 3/4" in diameter at top and 5" diameter at bottom. This is a very heavy piece, weighing approximately 3 pounds. This piece is very solid and thick. WHAT MAKES THIS RARE IS THAT MANY WERE DESTROYED BECAUSE OF THE SCARE LATER ON BY THE"MEDICAL" INDUSTRY. THAT THE GAS RADON WAS DISCOVERED TO HAVE CURING PROPERTIES AT THIS TIME OF THE LATE 19TH CENTURY WAS AT ONE TIME INCORPORATED INTO A CLAY PUCK THAT WAS PLACED INSIDE THE JUG.
