This book case it stamped in two sections that it was made by Gunn. Also. On the back of the top piece is a paper label, stating trademark in Grand Rapids Michigan. This bookcase has cast iron metal pieces in between each section. This bookcase overall is in good condition. I am calling it a project because the two bottom glass on the door is cracked. This is a giant and gorgeous item. The bookcase is 30" wide by 16" deep. The piece is made of Walnut with Burled trim. The Cathedral style front glass panels are original to the piece as well I believe. This piece has been in my parents home for the last 60 years, at least. The piece dates back to the 1860's/70's and was originally owned by a very prominent Louisville, Kentucky, family. It is in nice overall used condition. I would assume the bookcase was refinished at some point, most likely by my mother. There are two doors which open from the center and a drawer at the bottom which slides out. Currently, there are several(6 or 7) wood shelves ... moreinside the bookcase. Since this piece is so massive, I must insist that this be a"Local Pick-Up" only scenario. Carved three dimensional lion heads are mounted on burl panels. The original finish is very well preserved. Waxed and polished, all that is needed to preserve the warm antique patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. There is a warp to the right door. Losses to the left of the crown and small shrinkage separations from age, see photos. Doors have original wavy glass. The lock does not work, so the key is handle only. Upper shelves adjust on wooden supports. The crown is detachable for easier moving. Dimensions are 43" wide. 16" deep and 7' 2" tall. The name Maddox Tables represents the best of the best. The Maddox Table Company began operation in 1898. It ceased operation around 1985. It was founded by William Maddox. Son of an English immigrant, who invented a variety of furniture making machines, which he sold to manufacturers throughout the United States. Mr. Maddox owed much of his success as a table manufacturer to his invention of a machine for polishing wooden tabletops. One of the first furniture manufacturers in the United States to trademark his products. In 1898, Mr. Maddox sent a showman named Cedarine Allen on a world-wide promotional tour to Great Britain, Spain, Egypt, Arabia, Ceylon, Malaya, China, and Japan.
