Up for sale is working non-referb Emil J. Paidar Company chair. I was told this chair was used in a Podiatrists office and was purchased in an estate sale in 1989. I cannot confirm this. I got the chair from gentleman which made the purchase from the estate. To my knowledge I am the 3rd owner. I have maintained the chair. Cleaning, polish the metal, added oil to the pump and other items over the years. This chair has been my baby since 1993. The chair used to have a sticker under the seat which listed the manufacture info but this is also long gone. I used this chair everyday in my studio for over 10yrs. I did take a pic of the serial number, please see the pics. It works. It pumps and does not leak off. I have 6 chairs of this type and this one is by far my favorite. My hope is that it will find someone able to restore it and make it shine ... moreagain. It has some rips and tears but no rust, dents. I am unsure if this chair had a headrest as there is no mount for one but if it did the rest is long gone. The chair doers have somwe tears but no one has attempted to restore it. The arms, foot rest, swivl and pump all work great. The back also tilts and holds in place. This is a very nice chair. 3mths ago I seen a brother to this chair in an antique store in New Orleans for sale at $18000.00. Yea. I about crapped kittens on the spot! While I do not expect the sale price to be even close to this I do feel whoever gets this chair will get a bargain. I have also searched Google up and down for a picture of this chair and so far no luck. The store in New Orleans caught me trying to take a picture of her chair and had a fit. Beautiful vintage Koken Barber Chair from the late 1940's. I am selling this for my brother who is moving out of state and downsizing. He purchased it in the 1960's and has used it as a focal point in his home since so it has been well cared for. The porcelain base and chrome trim are flawless. He had it recovered in high grade Italian leather and the piece includes two children's booster seats. One round and the other cross bar as shown in the photos. They were recovered to match. The hydraulics are in excellent working condition in all positions. This would be a great piece for a collector or could be used functionally in a business setting. This is a very nice vintage Universal headrest for a barber chair. Marked with Pat. Oct 5. 1909; Universal. The headrest piece is nicely cushioned in green marbled vinyl and rests on 6 coiled springs. The cushion itself measures approx. 1/2" thick and about 7" x 4 1/4" The cushion is starting to tear away from the coils at all four corners. The steel bar measures 9 1/4" The bar is approx. 1/4" thick and 1 1/4" wide. No breaks cracks or repairs. Some pitting and a little rust but looks like everything works. Emil J. Paidar barber chair. Circa 1940. The manufacture of“modern” barber chairs can be traced back to shortly after the Civil War. By 1880s. Barber chairs could be raised, lowered, reclined and revolved, and in 1900, the familiar hydraulic-operated barber chair was patented. In 1900 there were two American primary dealers for barber chairs. Emil J. Paidar and Koken. Sources indicate the Emil J. Paidar Company of Chicago, Illinois was the leading company through the 1950s, producing top of the line barber chairs along with other barber shop necessities. The Koken and Paidar chairs were similar in function and price points. This balance between the barber chair manufacturers lasted until a third competitor arrived on the scene. Takara. Takara, a Japanese company, was expanding their operations overseas in the 1950s. The US Tariff Commission ... morewrote of Takara in 1970: After World War II a vigorous new barber chair industry grew up in Japan. Through energetic design. Sales and advertising campaigns, this industry built up the barber chair market in Japan until it is larger than that of the United States, despite the smaller population of Japan. Takara produced chairs of almost identical style and function to the Paidar and Koken chairs for substantially less and took advantage of decreasing tariffs to expand their operations in America. Imports increased dramatically in the late 1950s and through the 1960s. Supplanting the American-manufactured barber chairs. In an additional clever move. Takara found another, indirect way to up the competition with the American manufacturers. The Takara chair parts are interchangeable with the Paidar and Koken chairs, so if a piece of an existing chair was broken, it could be replaced with the less costly Takara part. Takara purchased the struggling Koken company in 1969 and thus obtained 70% of the market for barber chairs in the United States. Paidar appealed to the US Tariff Commission for assistance and/or increased import levies against the foreign competition in 1968 and ag
