Ancient Greek Messapian Pottery Trozella - 300 BC
An ancient Greek Messapian pottery Trozella. Dating to approximately 300 B.C. This wonderful piece is an exceptional example of the south Italic trozella. A vessel used in domestic contexts for the storage of liquids such as wine and oil. The shape is characterized by its round form and the distinctive high strap handles which have been decorated with rotelle embellishments, possibly mimicking contemporary metal wares. The body is decorated by a series of dark brown patterns over a smooth buff slip, the rim and base are coloured in similar fashion, whilst the rotelles are decorated by a series of stars. This vessel was produced by the Messapian culture. A society that inhabited the south-eastern peninsula or'heel' of Italy during the 4th century B.C. The Messapii had considerable trade and social links with mainland Greece, indeed ... moreduring this period Messapian forces were sent to aid Athens in its wars against the Sicilian city of Syracuse. The people of southern Italy during this period were far more culturally affiliated with the Greek world than that of their neighbours further north. The trozella produced by the Messapii are some of the most beautiful, elegant and highly desirable ancient Greek ceramic shapes. This piece is a particularly fine example of this remarkable form of pottery. Condition: Very good. Unrestored and intact. Height: 8 5/8 inches. Provenance: Ex. Connecticut private collection. Exceptional Delicate Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Olpe - 340 BC
A stunning. Delicate and vibrant ancient Greek Apulian terracotta olpe, attributed to the Menzies Group and dating to approximately 340 B.C. This delicately potted. Finely painted olpe(wine jug) is of typical Apulian form; with a ringed base, piriform body, short neck and flaring mouth. An elaborate Herculean Knot embellishes the rear of the looped handle. The scene depicts a naked, winged Eros seated upon a rocky outcrop and gazing expectantly forward. He holds a phiale in his outstreched right hand, whilst his left hand rests behind. Tendrils and acanthus leaves adorn the field, with wave decoration on the outer lip and lined decoration bordering the upper part of the scene. This fine piece is attributed to the Menzies Group of painters. Produced by a series of individuals who were active in Apulia during the second half of the 4th century ... moreB.C. Thier primary medium were small scale ceramics such as olpes and skyphoi, and Eros was amongst the favoured subjects. According to Philostrates the Elder(3rd century AD) this particular scene alludes to a tale popular at the time: A boy and girl. Both beautiful and under the tutelage of the same teacher, burned with love for each other; and since they were not free to embrace each other, they determined to die at this very rock, and leaped into the sea in their first and last embrace. Eros seated upon the rock. Stretching out his hand toward the sea, is the painters symbolic suggestion of this tale. A beautiful and moving piece. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Height: 3 5/8 inches. Provenance: From a UK private collection. Dispersed as part of a deceased estate and originally purchased by an ancestor of the previous owner, who was a professor of archaeology. Acquired in the middle-early part of the 20th Century, with attractive old patina on the surface. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. For added security we offer a full money-back guarantee if a recognized authority disputes the authenticity of any object sold.
Apulian Black Glazed Gnathia-Ware Askos - Ancient Art & Antiquities
Apulian Black Glazed Gnathia-Ware Askos An ancient Apulian Greek black glazed Gnathia-ware askos. A vessel mimicing a wine-skin. The body rendered with ribbed panels separated by images of birds in added white. Apulia. Magna Graecia, Southern Italy. Late 4th century BC. Height: 5 in. 12.5 cm) Gnathia ware is so named as it was first found at the Apulian site of Egnathia. The black glaze ware is often decorated with red. White, or yellow floral motifs. Production probably was centered around Taras, with workshops in Egnathia and Canosa. The output and quality of the Greek colonial potters working in Apulia increased greatly following the Peloponnesian War when Attic exports fell off sharply. Apulian craftsmanship is an amalgamation of the Ionian(Athenian, Attic) conventions, and Doric(western colonial Greek) styles, with a noticeable native ... moreItalian aesthetic.
