The Greeks and Romans are known to have worn sapphires from Ceylon, as described by writers from those times. In the world of the ancient Mediterranean(including the Greeks, Romans, Persians, Hebrews, and the various Indo-European Celtic tribes) priests and sorcerers honored the sapphire above all other gems, believing that sapphire enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. The ancient Mediterranean cultures also regarding sapphire as an antidote to black magic and effects of evil spirits, providing protection against sorcery. It was believed to banish evil spirits and send negative spells back to the sender. Here's a gorgeous. Richly colored natural cornflower blue sapphire precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The result was an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of fire and sparkle. It is brightly colored a regal cornflower blue, much, much lighter than inky"midnight blue" African or Australian sapphires, more along the lines of the bright blue of sapphires from Ceylon and Burma. The gemstone is at a minimum eye clean, and at least to the unaided eye, is flawless. The color is very intense, very vibrant, a saturated rich bright blue. Such good quality blue sapphires are in high demand, and can be quite costly. Unfortunately most seemingly fla

It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. The Ruins and Excavations of Ancient Rome by Rodolfo Lanciani. With a New Foreword by Richard Brilliant. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 617 pages. ... morePublisher: Bell Publishing Company; 1979) ISBN: 0517289458. The crumbling ruins of ancient Rome serve as our most tangible link to the political. Social, and military greatness of the city of the Caesars. To the untrained eye these scattered stones and tarnished relics present an unfathomed array of styles, structures, and periods. But the story behind these relics is alive with everything that is human and vital; from glorious triumph or decadent corruption to the everyday traffic and commercial flux of urban life. Concealed in these ruins is the story of the organic development of the city from a collection of small farming towns to its ultimate position as capital of the largest unified state in the history of the western world. And it is Rodolfo Lanciani who has brought this story to abundant life. As Professor Richard Brilliant states in the foreword. the author’s infectious curiosity about Rome and his delight in her remains have been so successfully served by his friendly, unpedantic style. If Rome has so clearly built on the past, our knowledge of the past still depends very much on Lanciani. The author has placed the art and the architecture of the city on a time line, reflecting the constantly evolving ideas and spirit of the civilization as they developed over hundreds of years. In addition to this chronological approach, he has considered the structures and sites from topographical and architectural perspectives. Thus three systems of organization provide the prospective traveler or student with a detailed and stimulating knowledge of the ancient city that is ideally adaptable to his particular interest or area of study. The book is divided into four sections. The first is a general consideration of Rome’s topography and the way in which the city was adapted to it. Next is the description of the Palatine Hill. On which the city was founded and

Publisher: University of California Press; 1998) This animated and readable book will surprise readers who assume that erotic art is universal in its meaning. Author John R. Clarke asks. what did sex mean to the Romans? In offering his provocative and thoughtful answer, Looking at Lovemaking” examines Roman attitudes toward sex and toward race, ethnicity, physical deformity, and humor as well; and shows how radically the Roman’s conception of these ideas differs from ours today. This richly illustrated volume is the first study of ancient erotic art and sexuality to set these works, many of them newly discovered and previously unpublished, in their ancient context, and the first to define the difference between modern and ancient concepts of sexuality using clear visual evidence. To characterize a work of art as“erotic” summons ideas of illicit images to be kept out of public view. And yet Clarke shows us that Roman depictions of sex. In all its diversity, were very much in demand. Visual representations of sex between men, between women, and between men and women, all in a variety of positions and groupings, were produced in a range of media, from fine cameo-glass and silver vessels to wall-paintings and mosaics, to mass-produced ceramics. Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Moesia. First Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 79 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 69 millimeters(2 5/8 inches) Height: 22 millimeters(7/8 inch) CONDITION: Good integrity. All original with no repairs. Some very hard and stubborn alkaline soil deposits inside of bowl. Moderate wear around fill hole consistent with use in the ancient world. DETAIL: This is a well preserved terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moseia. Present-day Bulgaria. The top surface of the oil lamp portrays an impressed braided pattern around the rim of the fill hole, a little indistinct, but basically a geometric pattern of a chain of small rectangles. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct, but it seems to be a circle with a two characters inside the circle. It’s not possible really to determine whether they might have been letters or merely figures. But clearly the pedestal contains a trademark. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces. As can be seen the design elements of the vessel are even after the passage of almost 2.000 years, by and large intact intact. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nice design in such a well-preserved state– whole and relatively intact with no major breakage or repairs. The vessel was of course buried for somewhere around two thousand years in the soil. As a consequence of this prolonged burial there are some

Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of ... moreEtruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: Modestly used. Clean. Pages are unmarked, no notes or highlighting, unmutilated, remaining well bound. Cloth covers are clean. Dustjacket shows only modest edge and corner shelfwear, one small 3/4 inch edge tear(neatly mended) at the top edge of the front side,

Egyptians, Etruscans, Phoenicians, Minoans, Sumerians and Greeks. During the 2nd millennium B.C. amber was in large part responsible for a network of roads built to facilitate the trade. The first trade roads archaeologists have evidence for are from the ancient Biblical/Mesopotamian city of Ur(home of Abraham) By 1700 B.C. the ... moreMinoans had established jealously-guarded trade routes from Knossos(Crete) to Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Scandinavia. By about 1500 B.C. many of the roads in eastern and central Europe had linked together into an extensive trading network known as the“Amber Routes” Here are two beautiful antique amber gemstones mounted to 14kt gold fill french hook earrings. These are not cheap gold-plated earrings. These are high-quality 14kt earrings manufactured in the USA. The gemstones ares produced from“reconstituted” amber. I.e. smaller pieces of amber which were heated, mixed with a binding agent such as resin, and then pressed into a mold. While solid amber is much more costly, reconstituted amber has been used for centuries to produce inexpensive amber beads and“gemstones” In fact many of the faceted amber“gemstones” found both in antique as well as contemporary gemstones are of reconstituted amber. Molded amber/resin was quite commonly used in Eastern Europe and Central Asia for centuries up through the Victorian era to produce ersatz gemstones. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: The Etruscan ... morecivilization is the name given today to the culture and way of life of people of ancient Italy whom ancient Romans called Etrusci or Tusci. The ancient Greeks' word for them was Tyrrhenoi. Or Tyrrsenoi. The Etruscans themselves used the term Rasenna, which was syncopated to Rasna or Ra?na. As distinguished by its own language, the civilization endured from an unknown prehistoric time prior to the foundation of Rome until its complete assimilation to Italic Rome in the Roman Republic. Numerous artifacts of Etruscan culture survived the Roman conquest. At its maximum extent during the foundation period of Rome and the Roman kingdom. It flourished in three confederacies: of Etruria, of the Po valley and Latium and of Campania. Rome was sited in Etruscan territory. There is considerable evidence that early Rome was dominated by Etruscans until the Romans sacked Veii in 396 BC. Culture that is identifiably and certainly Etruscan developed in Italy after about 800 B.C. approximately over the range of the preceding Iron Age Villanovan culture. The latter gave way in the seventh century to a culture that was influenced by Greek traders and Greek neighbors in Magna Graecia. The

DETAIL: Archaeologists have uncovered ancient Etruscan jewelry with ruby originating from Ceylon which dates back to the seventh century B.C. In the classical ancient world. Rubies from Afghanistan, Ceylon, India and Burma were traded in the ancient port cities of the Eastern Mediterranean(often by Phoenicians) and from there traveled throughout Europe. It is believed that most of the ancient world’s ruby came from Ceylon, where evidence suggests ruby may have been mined for the past 20,000 years. However scientists believe that ruby has also been mined in Burma since Paleolithic and Neolithic times as well, as mining tools have been excavated by archaeologists dating both to the Bronze Age as well as backwards into the Stone Age. In Antiquity and through the Middle Ages it was believed that the cosmos was reflected in gemstones, and ruby was associated with the planet Mars. The ancient Romans also associated ruby with Mars(known as“Ares” to the ancient Greeks, son o

Ancient ? Etruscan Greek Style Cup w Saucer
This is probably a reproduction. But we’re not really sure. The painting is nicely done. The cup is 3 5/8” handle to opposite edge, 3 ¼” wide, and 2 ¾” tall. The saucer is 5 1/8” in diameter and 1 ¼” tall. There are some chips in the cup and saucer, study the photos. We don’t really know anything about it, its age, authenticity, etc. After buying treasures from estates for years we’re just cleaning out the closets.
