While I always liked ancient coins I never really got very serious about them. Nor did I accumulate much knowledge on them. However I did once have the ... moreopportunity to purchase a large group of ancient coins accumulated by a collector and part time dealer, who decided to just sell everything he had. So I have been listing them here on ebay, with any information he had noted on each one. But please judge for yourself, both by the description below and the photos, as to whether his attribution and any noted condition is indeed correct. I will combine shipping if you just let me know that you will be bidding on additional coin listings. PLEASE NOTE: I have had a couple of inquiries regarding more background on these Roman coins. And where they might have been originally found. The collector/dealer from whom I purchased the entire group was originally a dealer for them in England, before he relocated to the USA. In fact the vast majority of them are in folded holders that are priced in English Pounds Sterling, ranging from a low of 8 BPS(about $13 USD) to a high of 25 BPS(about $40) Some have had the BPS price crossed out and the USD price overwritten instead. As the internet indicates that the Roman conquest of England began in 43 A.D. under Claudius, and that this Roman occupation of England ended in 410 A.D. I believe that the vast majority of these coins were originally located in England, as the range of dates of the examples I purchased match up closely to this English occupation period by Romans. I expect that due to this history there exists many collectors of Roman coins within Enland. And why this person had originally dealt in them. The coins themselves range from examples that were obviously originally located in the ground(metal detecting finds) to those that appear to have seen very little use(storage hoard finds) The price in BPS noted on each example doesn't seem to always coincide with the coin's physical condition, so the original pricing is expectedly more due to the scarcity, desireability,

Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Marcus Aurelius reigned from 161 AD to 180 AD. And was perhaps the only true philosopher-king in the history of the world. Persians, Greeks and Celts believed citrine to be the crystallized essence of sunshine, and believed it would aid in digestion and cleanse toxins from the body, and it was even carried as protection against snake venom. Here's a very beautiful, very clean, 19th century golden-yellow faceted citrine from the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. Very popular in 18th and 19th century Victorian Scotland, ... morecitrine has remained a very popular gemstone through the 20th century. This gemstone was handcrafted into this sparkling faceted octagon late in the 19th century in Russia. The finished gemstone is also known within the trade as an“emerald cut” This is a very fine, richly colored golden yellow colored semi-precious gemstone, the color and flavor much like golden color honey. As you can see from the photo enlargements here, it is to the eye completely transparent and free from inclusions, and possesses exceptional sparkle and luster. It is very clean, water clear, and very bright. The trained eye will easily discern from the photo that the gemstone has been hand-faceted. The coarseness of the 19th century faceting is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors, and is not considered a detriment. Unlike today’s computer controlled machine processes, the cut and finish of a gemstone such as this is the legacy of an artisan who lived two centuries ago. Such antique hand-faceted gemstones possess much greater character and appeal than today's mass-produced machine-faceted gemstones. This gemstone has great luster and sparkle. And to the eye is completely transparent, but

Antique 1897 Book Everyday Roman Life in Pliny's Time 74 Fabulous Pix Lithograph
Roman Life in Pliny’s Time by Maurice Pellison. Translated from the French by Maud Wilkinson, with an Introduction by Frank Justus Miller. DESCRIPTION: Hardback: 315 pages. Publisher: The Chautauqua-Century Press; 1897) This remarkably well-preserved book was published in 1897 in New York by The Chautauqua Century Press. Judging by appearances it’s hard to believe it is well more than a century old. There is a little edge wear to the hard cover corners and the spine heels top and bottom. The pages are a little yellowed toward the edges(but not dry or fragile) All to be expected. What is not expected is that there is very little spotting. No markings whatever(except for a pencil price on the inside front end paper) and the book remains tightly bound. It’s in very nice condition, no tears– even in end papers. Clean covers, nice illustrations. ... moreFrom the introduction: The story of growth from a group of unconnected hill-top settlements upon the Tiber to a political organization of world-wide dominion seems hardly to belong to sober history. Great national development has mostly come from the union of nations already existing, or from the powerful impetus contributed by parent nations to colonial stocks. But the Roman Empire was unique in this respect. It sprung from a single city which, though it extended its sway over the whole known world, never ceased not to be alone the seat of government, but the government itself. Rome was the nation. From her forum radiated to every land those military roads. The highways of commerce and dominion that made her rule a vital thing wherever her conquering legions found their way. This masterful city not only absorbed all real power, but gathered up all the learning, the art, the customs and religions of the nations and made them her own; until to be a Roman came to mean to be a citizen of the world, and Roman citizenship was a coveted prize to be attained at any cost of blood or treasure. This wide dominion was attained by gradual and natural growth. Extending over hund

Pink tourmaline was held in such high regard by the(last) Empress of China, Tz'u Hsi, that she purchased bought almost a ton of it from a mine in California, and was eventually laid to rest(eternally) on a carved tourmaline pillow. You can see the remains of the clasp, and you can see where the pivot pin was mounting, holding the brooch pin. Unfortunately the brooch pins were generally constructed of iron, and so decomposed over the centuries. Even if constructed of bronze, the pins were generally so fine that they were either broken during the life of the owner, or decomposed during the thousands of years that the artifact was buried. This particular artifact lost both the brooch pin, the pivot pin which would have held it in place, and the fold in the catch. Nonetheless. Despite the adverse effects of having spent two thousand years buried in soil, fate has been kind, and the brooch has been

On the other hand. Colorless quartz crystals were thought to possess mystical powers. Publisher: Oxford University Press; 2000) With a single announcement from a herald. All the cities of Greece and Asia had been set free; only an intrepid soul could formulate such an ambitious project, only phenomenal valor and fortune bring it to fruition. Thus Livy describes the reaction to the Roman commander T.Q. Flamininus' proclamation of the freedom of Greece at the Isthmian games near Corinth in 196 BC. Half a century later Greece was annexed as a province of the Romans who burned the ancient city of Corinth to the ground. Books 31 to 40 of Livy's history chart Rome's emergence as an imperial nation and the Romans tempestuous involvement with Greece. Macedonia ... moreand the near East in the opening decades of the second century B.C. They are our most important source for Greco-Roman relations in that century. Livy's dramatic narrative includes the Roman campaigns in Spain and against the Gallic tribes of Northern Italy; the flight of Hannibal from Carthage and his death in the East; the debate on the Oppian law; and the Bacchanalian Episode. This is the only unabridged English translation of Books 31 to 40. Inside Diameter: 58 x 55 millimeters. Band Width: 6 millimeters at the top; 4 millimeters at the bottom. Band Thickness: 5 millimeters at the top; 4 millimeters at the bottom. Opening: 8 millimeters. Though very simple Roman bronze bracelet circa 1st century AD. It would fit a woman of light to medium build, and with that caveat, is completely ... moreand eminently wearable. The bracelet was recovered unbroken and intact. As is ordinarily the case, the artifact exhibits moderate porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in earth) Unlike so many smaller bronze artifacts which are completely disfigured by corrosion, this particular piece happened to come to rest in fairly gentle soil conditions. The consequence is that though you can see upon close scrutiny clear evidence that this bracelet spent millennia buried beneath the ground, nonetheless to casual examination it is quite pleasant, with the rich, warm glow of ancient bronze. You can clearly see. Of course, a series of shallow scallops caused by corrosive soil conditions. Naturally in these photo enlargements these blemishes are quite distinct. The effect is not unappealing– it looks quite a bit like the nugget style bracelets which were so wildly popular in the USA in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Despite the moderate porosity, the bracelet remains intact and wearable. And hand, to the casual observer, it simply appears a nicely toned bronze bracelet. However undeniably it bears the scars of having spent almost two thousand years in fairly corrosive soil cond

This particular specimen is a beautiful violet color with blue undertones– depending on whether the light is white(outdoors) or yellow, it will vary between violet and violet-blue in color. It is quite striking, very handsome and gentle in tone, the color very soft and understated, the star quite beautiful. The gemstone was hand shaped ... moreand polished into this very beautiful oval cabochon by a 19th century Russian artisan for use in domestic jewelry. The result is an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of depth and gorgeous tone. It is not a flawless gemstone. Of course it is the alignment of included material which creates the star– so star sapphires always have included material. The question is, how noticeable? With this particular specimen to casual scrutiny it simply appears to be a beautiful, unblemished star sapphire. However close inspection will reveal a few variations in the tone and a few internal blemishes. Of course here in these photo enlargements these blemishes are quite obvious. But in hand, life-size, they simply are not discerned when casually viewed. It is only when you examine it very carefully that you will notice some color zoning and a minor flaw or two. Of course, the same can be said of most sapphires in general, and particularly star sapphires. Color zoning is quite common in sapphires, and unless very obvious, is generally not seriously detrimental. Known as a"star" sapphire because of an optical effect known as an"asterism" orie

The ring was not actually recovered with the original gemstone intact. A number of different types of adhesives were used in the ancient and medieval worlds, including commonly(for jewelry) with resin or bitumen. Such adhesives generally failed sooner or later, especially when exposed to the rigors of ordinary daily life. Very handsome and quite exceptional in character, this striking gemstone was hand shaped and polished into this very beautiful oval cut cabochon by an 18th century Russian artisan. This lustrous semi-precious gemstone possesses a bright and colorful character. It is a nice quality tourmaline by 18th century standards. The gemstone would be more or less transparent except for the fact that it is so thick. Given the thick cut, it is more toward translucent than transparent. By today’s standards it is not a high quality tourmaline– though its origin makes it nonetheless extraordinary. But by 18th century standards, this was a very desirable and expensive gemstone. To casual observation if seems simply a large, beautiful, extraordinary, brightly colored tourmaline. But of course very close scrutiny, especially under high magnification, will reveal lots of si

Highly favored by the royal houses of Renaissance Europe, they were considered noble in nature, and in some countries ownership was restricted to royalty and others of high birth. This particular variety of garnet is known as“pyrope” and is especially favored for its dark, blood red tones. They are truly gorgeously colored brilliant semi-precious gemstones. This precious gemstone is by and large transparent. However as you can see, it possesses a lot of thin, silk strand-like seams composed of colorless crystalline material. Once set into a ring or pendant this material would be considerably less noticeable. But as it is though to the cursory glance of the casual admirer the gemstone seems without blemish, close examination will clearly show this finely stranded colorless crystalline material. Agate bowls were also popular in the Byzantine Empire, and vast collections of agate bowls became common among European royalty during the Renaissance. Agate gemstones like this one were extremely popular throughout the Roman Empire and earlier the Greeks, Phoenicians, Sumerians and Egyptians fashioned adornments from agate. Archeology suggests that quartz agate was favored in this way as long as 10,000 years ago. Agates were formed millions of years ago when gas bubbles occurred in volcanic rocks or lava. DETAIL: An especially nice crafted and well preserved ancient Roman bronze ring circa 350-400 A.D. As you can see. The design is simple, but elegant. The"bezel" or center part ... moreof this ring is a very elegant teardrop shape, probably intended to be in the shape of an ivy leaf. The bezel itself is decorated with a zig-zag pattern which is probably nothing more than an abstract geometric pattern, which was a quite popular theme in late Imperial Rome. The engraving does bear a resemblance to a Roman depiction of a lightening bolt, which was shield(scutum) emblem used by a number of Roman Legions, including the infamous Tenth. The tenth, which fought for Julius Caesar, also was used to put down the revolt in Judea. However as much as the engraving looks like a lightening bolt to contemporary eyes, the Roman depiction of a lightening bolt was stylistically a little bit different. So this is probably merely a pleasing geometric design, quite handsome nonetheless. The construction of the ring is of the more archaic style where the bands and bezel are crafted separately and then attached. The workmanship is quite competent however– it is very difficult to ascertain that the bands and bezel are not of one-piece construction. Despite the archaic style. The craftsmanship is not in the slightest crude. The bezel is quite sturdy, a whopping three

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 8 1/2(U.S. Diameter: 20 1/2mm* 20mm(outer dimensions) 19mm(inner diameter) Bezel: 20mm(height) 19mm(breadth) Fixed Width 3 1/2mm Band. Weight: 1.43 grams. CONDITION: Very good. Completely intact, moderately light wear, very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A substantial. Well constructed Roman bronze band with very masculine and handsome features. The construction is that of a simple band clearly cut from flat bronze stock, it has the look of hammered bronze. Obviously as you can see it is a little more than ... morea simple band, as it does incorporate a large oval bezel, all part of the same piece of bronze. It also features overlapping bands at the back, which at the time it was created would have formed an“adjustable” ring. However ancient metal tends to crystallize and become inflexible, and though the ring was“adjustable” when it was originally created, fifteen or sixteen centuries later the ring size is pretty much fixed, there’s little“flex” left in the bronze bands. Very simple. Rather uncommon to the time, the ring remains in very good condition. Rather than the more archaic style of producing band and bezel separately and then attaching them together, this ring is constructed of a single piece of bronze, albeit cut from flat, hammered bronze sheet rather than molded from molten bronze. In a way, this accentuates the ring’s timeless design and modern flavor. There are clear indications that the ring was worn during an ancient lifetime long past. However this should not be a source for disappointment. You must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer with the idea that the ring would be enjoyed and worn by the

Very little porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: An exceptionally well preserved bronze intaglio ring circa 1st century A.D. bearing remarkable workmanship and demonstrating the technique of reverse intaglio carving. There are several photo enlargements of the intaglio bezel below. And you can see the technique ... moreused in this remarkable and ancient art form. An intaglio ring was used to press the wearer's"seal" into lead, clay, or wax, leaving an impression created by the ring's bezel. Though oftentimes the carved intaglio seal might be in the form of a gemstone such as carnelian, carved and then mounted onto a ring; frequently the intaglio seal was created by simply carving into a metal bezel– such as is the case here. Rather than in relief, the image was created recessed, and everything had to be carved in mirror image so that when a piece of clay or wax was impressed with the seal, the image would be“right side out” The recessed engraving here seems to be that of one of the sailing vessels(a cargo galley) which Rome used to transport grain from Alexandria to Rome. And other commodities throughout the Mediterranean. Close examination of the metal work(see below) reveals a remarkable illustration of the technique. One of the images directly below is a very large blow-up of the bezel– which can be viewed for detail. As you can see, several holes are drilled into the material(whether it be gemstone or metal) to provide a starting point for the engravers

The ring sports a round, gumdrop” bezel which was probably intended to give the impression of a gemstone; or at least to suggest a gemstone. This as opposed to the more modern style of construction prevalent in the following centuries whereby the bands and bezel are integrated(fashioned from a single piece of metal) The ring evidences light wear. Nothing particularly heavy, however the bands were mangled a bit due to the soil pressure exerted on the ring during the thousand years it was buried. If desired, the ring could be heated and the bands“tweaked” however generally it is better just to leave well enough alone. Though the bands are slightly misshapen, the ring“wears” quite nicely. The fact that the ring evidences some degree of wear from ancient usage should not, however, be a source of disappointment. As you can see. The ring is very bold, handsome, and elegant in design. The"bezel" ... moreor face of the ring is engraved with a classic lightening bolt design accentuated with a periphery line composed of diagonal multiple hash marks at the four corners of the bezel. Within the frame formed by the two opposing“single zig-zag” lightening bolts is an exceeding finely engraved tight series of zig-zags, forming a long, intricate lightening bolt from the top to the bottom edge of the bezel. Though it is hard to discern from some angles of view as it is so exceedingly fine, the engraved lightening bolt design is remarkably well preserved, very intricate, and bears very minimal signs of wear(anything more than very light wear and the central elongated zig-zag will wear smooth and disappear, leaving only the flanking“close-up” single zig-zags) However with respect to this specimen. Both the bezel and the bands evidence very light wear, and the elongated central lightening bolt is entirely intact. Of course, close examination will nonetheless reveal unmistakable signs of wear. Roman green glass unguent or oil bottle of fairly sizeable dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ ... moreand 3 inches in size. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted, engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the smaller pieces such as this are rarely recovered intact except as grave goods. This piece as you can see has a fairly well-formed and defined lip. And a neck beneath slightly tapered neck– overall a somewhat primitive specimen. Normally this would have been used to dispense aromatic oils or other unguents. Possessing a very pleasing green color, this bottle is probably amongst the earlier Roman

DETAIL: An exceptionally heavy. Massively constructed, very well preserved bronze ring circa 4th century A.D. As you can see, the ... morering is very bold, handsome, and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of the ring is engraved with a classical starburst design accentuated with hash marks on sculpted shouldered bands. Not a terribly uncommon theme for the time, but very well executed. Starburst themes of one variety or another were a very popular geometric design during the first few centuries A.D. This particular depiction is quite characteristic of the era except for rather uncommon crosshatched lines which connect the four arms of the starburst; forming a peripheral diamond border to the bezel’s circumference. All of the engraving exhibits very fine workmanship, and is mostly intact– though it is obvious that the ring was worn in life. The ring is very heavily constructed and weighs several times as much as most similar rings of the era. There is a very modest amount of wear evidenced. Though clearly it was worn in ancient times. The amount of wear is not excessive and is not discernible except upon close scrutiny. The extent of this wear is more evident on the bands than on the bezel. The ring possesses the gorgeous, medium tone so characteristic of ancient bronze. There

Carnelian was also believed to be strong protection from the evil eye, referring to the almost universal belief in the ancient world that some evil sorcerers or witches had the ability to transmit evil with just a glance. The ancient Mediterranean cultures, particularly the Romans, recommended carnelian gemstones for those of weak voice or timid on speech. It was also thought to give courage to those who wore the gemstone, and also to provide a positive influence on the reproductive system. As with amber, ancient Romans believed that the darker carnelian represented males and the lighter carnelian, females. Early Mediterranean cultures also believed that carnelian would protect the deceased in the journey between this world and the next. Carnelian was also believed an aid to astral travel in ancient Egypt. And Siberian shamans be

DETAIL: This is a very handsome silver antoninianus produced in the city of Rome itself sometime during the year 244 A.D. The coin is in superb condition. Evidencing only very light wear from circulation in ancient Rome. It was well struck both front and back, on a very generous planchet(blank) and was well-centered. Unlike most coins of the era, the strike caught the entirely of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. The only shortcoming of the specimen is that quite characteristic of the coinage of the era, the reverse strike was struck with a worn die, and so the reverse is of lower profile and not quite as finely detailed as is the obverse. These coins were all struck by hand(of course) and the reverse dies were generally used about three times as long as were the obverse dies(which contained the emperor’s image and so had better be sharp and well struck) Consequentially as the rear die was used for tends of thousands of strikes. Even half-way through its life the die was worn down, and the resulting reverse strikes were of lower pr

This gives the ring a very classical, almost timeless character. You can see that the ring possesses a“sculpted” design. The bezel or center portion of the ring is an elevated oval shaped pyramid. The bezel is flanked top and bottom with quite distinct arrow shaped accents which point, when worn, to the bezel and away from the finger(perpendicular to the band) Flanking the other two sides of the bezel, positioned further down along the band, are two more, albeit longer, arrow shaped accents parallel to the band. It is in relatively good condition. Substantial wear from circulation in ancient Rome, but the legends and themes remain clear and distinct. It was well struck both front and back the result a little irregular but very typical for the era. Atypical for the era, the strike was well-centered, and so caught most of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. The coin is just a little undersized, too small to catch the entire strike(a few letters of the legends are missing- a quite common characteristic of the era) But on the other hand, it is a very thick coin in remarkably high relief, almost as if it were ancient Greek coin. On the whole it is without a doubt a very well struck coin, the slightly undersized nature of the planchet being more than made up by the thickness of the coin and the height of the relief. The obverse of the coin depicts the head of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus, depicted with laureate crown; and the legend"L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIII" L SEPT SEV" of course refers to the Emperor's name, Lucius Septimius S

DETAIL: An intact fairly well preserved. Heavy ... moreRoman bronze bracelet circa 1st century A.D. from the Province of Judaea. The style, which was also very popular in earrings, is known as a“leech” style for obvious reasons. As you can see(with some difficulty) the surface of the bracelet bears a fairly complex series of punch dot style decorative lines running parallel with the circumference on both sides of the bracelet. The bracelet is fairly large and would fit a lady of slim to medium build, or a man of very slender build, and with that caveat, is completely and eminently wearable. The bracelet was recovered unbroken and intact. As is ordinarily the case. The artifact exhibits some substantial porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in earth) Unlike so many smaller bronze artifacts which are completely destroyed by corrosion, this particular piece is still intact. However it clearly spent almost two thousand years in fairly corrosive soil conditions. You can see how corrosion/oxidation has sculpted the metal into a series of shallow scallops. The effect is not unappealing– it looks quite a bit like the nugget style bracelets which were so wildly popular in the USA in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Despite the
NEW "Cruelty & Civilization" Roman Games Coliseum Gladiator Circus Chariot Races
Cruelty and Civilization: The Roman Games by Roland Auguet. DESCRIPTION: Published at $39.99] Hardback with Dust Jacket: 222 pages. Publisher: Barnes& Noble; 1998) The great spectacles of Ancient Rome were not merely casual entertainment. A matter of choice for the audience, like the modern theatre. Under the Empire the games had become a public opiate and they ended by giving the daily life of Rome its rhythm and luster. From one year to the next, the Roman citizens lived in anticipation of the games; they provided excitement and helped the citizens forget the mediocrity of their own condition and their lack of political power. In the course of endless festivals, the most minutely organized productions were staged at vast expense, and Rome developed its own cult of the'star' This cult was not the product of naive popular imagery: ... moreidols and outcasts at the same time, yet doomed to a bloody death, the champions of the arena were the instruments of collective pleasure. Roland Auguet has not restricted himself to the detailed reconstruction of these spectacles; he has also analyzed the emotions of the crowd and the motives of the rulers. He explains why the games were so important in the life of the city and what the popularity of these spectacles, this strange combination of“Cruelty and Civilization” reveals about the mentality of the citizens of Rome. The book also includes twenty-four illustrations that capture the pomp and drama of the Roman games. CONDITION: New and unread. The Romans: An Introduction to Their History and Civilization by Karl Christ. Translated from the German by Christopher Holme. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 294 pages. Publisher: University of California; 1985) Roman civilization is one of the bases of the modern world. The extraordinary achievements of Rome- political. Military, cultural- and its dramatic, thousand-year history, during which it grew to dominate the whole world of classical antiquity before being overwhelmed in its turn, have been continuously studied and variously interpreted ever since. Rome has been commended for its administration, praised for its system of justice, admired for its arts and technology, extolled for its"virtues, such as love, freedom, independence, discipline, courage, and austerity. It has also been condemned for its aggression, its exploitation of slaves, ... moreits excesses, and the decadence that led to its decline. But such was Rome's impact, and so remarkable was the empire it built, that its influence has never ceased to be felt. Whether as a model of political power. Of moral behavior, or of social control, Rome, with its splendors and triumphs, its failings and disasters, is an inexhaustible quarry for the lessons that its history offers and the legacies that it has bequeathed. Karl Christ conveys the essence of this vital Roman tradition with a coherence and compact precision that few scholars, if any, have been able to achieve. Following the main chronological developments of Roman history, he combines the necessary minimum of political and military narrative with lucid social and economic analysis, separate chapters on Roman ways of life and law, and wide-ranging coverage of literature, art, science, technology, and religion. With maps and photographs as well as a specially prepared bibliography for further reading, The Romans" is the most up-to-date, authoritative and comprehensive single-volume introduction to the history and civilization of Ancient Rome. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. Medieval sorcerers believed that sapphire enabled them to hear and understand the most obscure oracles. Not only did sapphire help to get in touch with astral and psychic realms, but the stone ... morealso provided protection for those who took those journeys. Sapphires have been since ancient times one of the most highly valued of all gemstones, and references to the gemstone date back to about 800 B.C. Here's a gorgeous, richly colored natural dark blue sapphire precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. The gemstone was hand shaped and polished into this very beautiful oval cabochon. The result is an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of depth and gorgeous tone. It is considerably lighter than inky"midnight blue" African or Australian sapphires, but well past the medium blue of sapphires from Ceylon and Burma. It would be considerably lighter to the eye except that the cabochon gemstone is so thick. Naturally the thicker the gemstone the darker it appears, as there is more material for light to penetrate. Good quality blue sapphires are in high demand, and can be quite costly. Unfortunately most seemingly flawless, transparent“sapphires” sold even by the largest and most reputable retailers in the United States are synthetic(read the fine print; and the same is true of emeralds and rubies) However the Southern Ural Mo

Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of ... moreEtruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: Modestly used. Clean. Pages are unmarked, no notes or highlighting, unmutilated, remaining well bound. Cloth covers are clean. Dustjacket shows only modest edge and corner shelfwear, one small 3/4 inch edge tear(neatly mended) at the top edge of the front side,
