This is a book for the Sotheby's auction catalog sale held in New York on June 7. 2012 for Antiquities, covering 79 lots in 75 pages. All lots illustrated ... morein color. Excellent condition. Here is what Sotheby's had to say about its sale: This season’s Antiquities auction will include a variety of examples of Egyptian, Classical and Western Asiatic material. We are pleased to offer, from the Estate of Jan Mitchell, a rare and complete Greek marble grave stele from the mid to late 4th century B.C. showing a young boy with his dog, found in Athens in 1877. Three Greek pottery vases to be offered from this estate were once the property of William Randolph Hearst; one comes originally from George Waddington(1793-1869) Dean of Durham Cathedral, one from Alfred Bourguignon, the late 19th century Neapolitan collector and dealer, and one from the Ruesch Collection dispersed in Switzerland in 1936. The sale also includes a draped marble figure of a muse holding a lyre, which came to light in 1891 on the slopes of Mount Helikon. Among other fine examples of Roman marble sculpture is a long-lost almost life-size figure of Aphrodite, from the collection of the Regency collector and designer Thomas Hope, a newly rediscovered figure of Artemis of the Dresden Type, unearthed and published in the 1880s with a figure of Kybele, also in the sale, and a figure of Sophocles once at Marbury Hall and acquired by James Hugh Fitz-Barry from Thomas Jenkins in the 1770s. The highlight of the Egyptian section is a complete limestone block statue of a transport official named Karo, who worked at the court of King Rameses III; once in the private museum of a convent in Vienna, a gift made to the congregation in the 19th century, it was last sold in these room in 1998. Among the gems of the sale are a small Predynastic stone vessel of unusual and pleasing shape, and a slender Greek marble wing with remains of red pigment. Powered by The free listing tool. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In the world of the ancient Mediterranean(including the various Indo-European Celtic tribes) Priests and sorcerers honored the sapphire above all other gems, believing that sapphire enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. Sapphires have been since ancient times one of the most highly valued of all gemstones, and references to the gemstone date back to about 800 B.C. Here are two gorgeous, richly colored natural bright blue sapphire precious gemstones from the Ural Mountains ... moreof Russia. The gemstones were hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The results are two exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstones with lots of fire and sparkle. They are a bright blue with a very light undertone, just a hint of green, very similar in appearance to the bright medium blue of sapphires from Ceylon and Siam(Sri Lanka and Thailand) Such good quality blue sapphires are in high demand, and can be quite costly. Unfortunately most seemingly flawless, transparent“sapphires” sold even by the largest and most reputable retailers in the United States are synthetic(read the fine print; and the same is true of emeralds and rubies) However the Southern Ural Mountains of Russia have been producing good quality, natural sapphires for centuries. Under magnification the gemstones show the unmistakable characteristics of having been hand crafted. The coarseness of the 19th century finish is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors. And is not considered a detriment, or detract fr

Brightly colored natural honey hued mandarin orange sapphire precious gemstone from the Southern Ural Mountains of Siberia, Russia, handcrafted into this sparking faceted oval. The result is an exquisite and incredibly ... morevividly colored precious gemstone with lots of depth, fire and sparkle. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The color in hand is more orange than appears here in these images which exaggerate the yellow- the color is very close to a mandarin orange. Depending upon the light, the color will vary from a bright mandarin orange indoors to a bright amber-orange outdoors. Either way. The color is quite exquisite, the sparkle diamond-like in intensity. Orange sapphires are amongst the most rare of all colored sapphires, and this particular specimen is very beautiful. The gemstone is to the casual admirer transparent and clean. It is absolutely transparent. However if you look very closely, a sprinkling of minute, colorless pin-prick sized spicules are visible to the naked eye. Under a 5x glass, or in these 600% photo enlargements, you can see that this specks are actually a small cluster of very light, colorless crystalline blemishes. That's all that separate this from being a $3,000 g

Genuine Natural Antique Handcrafted Two Carat Rich. Regal Red Oval Cut Russian Garnet. ORIGIN: The Ural Mountains. Russia. 18th Century. CLASSIFICATION: Red Garnet Oval Oval. SIZE: Length: 8mm. Width: 6mm. Depth: 3mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: Approximately 1.89 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstone as a ring. Pendant, or into earrings. DETAIL: The ancients believed that a garnet could give its wearer guidance in the night. Allowing them to see when others could not. Due to its red color, ancient cultures including the Celts, Greeks, and Romans also associated it with blood, and thus garnet was thought to stop bleeding or bloodshed between enemies. Garnet was also worn for protection when traveling, and according to Jewish mythology, a giant garnet provided interior lighting for Noah's Ark. It is also believed ... morethat garnet, described as“nopek” was one of the twelve gemstones described in the Bible in Exodus 28:17-20 as adorning Aaron’s breastplate, representing the twelve tribes of ancient Israel. Here's a gorgeous, blood red garnet gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia, where the production of garnet has gone on for many centuries. This gorgeous gemstone was hand shaped and polished into this very beautiful oval cut cabochon by an 18th century Russian artisan. The cut is also known as an octagon. This lustrous semi-precious gemstone possesses a rich, velvety, regal, blood red hue. It is an extremely attractive gemstone, of very special character and remarkable color and texture. Highly favored by the royal houses of Renaissance Europe, garnet was considered noble in nature, and in some countries ownership was restricted to royalty and others of high birth. This particular variety of garnet is known as“pyrope” and is especially favored for its dark, blood red tones. It is truly a gorgeously colored, brilliant semi-precious gemstones. HUGE Illustrated Guide Classical Mythology 200 Pix Salvadore Dali Roman Greek
The Illustrated Guide to Classical Mythology by A.R. Hope Moncrieff. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 160 pages. Publisher: Studio Editions; 1994) Throughout recorded history the peoples of the world have invented stories to explain the great mysteries of nature. And to justify the culture in which they live. For the Ancient Greeks the sun rose and set because Phoebus-Apollo drove his dazzling chariot daily across the sky, while winter came on those months of the year when Persephone, daughter of the earth goddess Demeter, descended into the underworld. Helped or hindered by the gods, human heroes were also the subjects of legendary tales, many of them representing a particular quality: the cunning of Odysseus, for example, the beauty of Helen or the courage of Antigone. Timeless in their appeal, the Greek myths have continued to fascinate ... moresuccessive generations of writers, artists and sculptors throughout Western Europe. This superb collection is an abridged and illustrated edition of Hope Moncrieff’s“Classic Myths and Legends” Including such well-known tales as Theseus and the Minotaur, Perseus and Andromeda, the Tale of Troy and the House of Agamemnon. The ancient myths are brought to life with a vast array of fascinating pictures, showing the diverse ways in which classic heroes have been portrayed over the centuries. A wealth of images spans over 3,500 years, from the ancient“Mask of Agamemnon” to the surreal“Metamorphosis of Narcissus” by Salvador Dali. Over 200 images have been drawn from a range of sources, from ancient architecture, sculpture and vase painting, from the works of the Old Masters and the Pre-Raphaelites, and from early illustrated editions of the epic poems of Homer and Ovid. Agate bowls were also popular in the Byzantine Empire, and vast collections of agate bowls became common among European royalty during the Renaissance. Hand-shaped into a tapered oblong and drilled for use as a pendant circa 1st century in the Roman Province of Thracia(present-day Bulgaria and Serbia) This piece is a genuine banded agate gemstone. It is in good condition, not cracked, chipped, broken or repaired. Of course, it was buried for almost two thousand years, so there are minor scratches and scuffs. Agate gemstones like this one were extremely popular throughout the Roman Empire and earlier the Greeks, Phoenicians, Sumerians and Egyptians fashioned adornments from agate. Archeology suggests that quartz agate was favored in this way as long as 10,000 years ago. Agates were formed millions of years ago when gas bubbles occurred in volcanic rocks or lava.
