It has also been useful to orthopedic specialists in the treatment of bone disease and in preventing and reversing damage to RNA and DNA. And who has not heard of fluorescent lighting ... moreor fluorescent(glow in the dark” toys and light wands? Fewer will know that fluorite has also been used since ancient times as a flux to aid in the smelting of metals. But did you know that fluorite was popular for use in gemstones and gemstone carvings in ancient Egypt where it was used in the production of scarab amulets? That Pliny the Elder described the use of fluorite as a gemstone in first-century Rome. Describing as well its magical and medicinal uses? Even through Renaissance and Victorian Europe colorful fluoride gemstones were very popular in their regal purple varieties; as well as a very famous and now frightfully rare banded purple and yellow variety from England! This particular gemstone originated from one of the ancient sources of this gemstone. Bavaria, and brought to 19th century Russia where the jewelers of the Czars and of the noble and wealthy families produced the ornate jewelry of Byzantine Russia. The ancient Greeks believed it guarded children from drowning, and it was also thought to be a potent ... moreantidote against poisons. Here are two gorgeously colored bright green demantoid garnet semi-precious gemstones. Hand crafted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. These particular gemstones were hand cut and faceted into dazzling, sparkling gemstones of tremendous brilliance and flash. The faceted cut is a coarse precursor to what eventually became known in the industry as a"brilliant cut" round, the contemporary finish generally given to round diamonds. These gemstones have every bit the flash of a diamond, and are a hundred, even a thousand times more rare. In fact demantoid garnet is one of the rarest colored gemstones in the world, and the most highly valued garnet of all. Its dispersion and reflection indexes exceed that of a diamond, which is to say that its brilliance is greater than a diamond's. In fact the name demantoid is derived from the Dutch word for diamond, demant" These are exceptionally nice quality specimens. The ancient Greeks ... morebelieved it guarded children from drowning, and it was also thought to be a potent antidote against poisons. Here is a gorgeously colored bright green grossular garnet of very substantial proportions. Although seemingly long forgotten, grossular garnet was originally name for the gooseberry of which grossularia is the botanical name, in reference to this green variety of garnet which was originally discovered in Siberia. Hand crafted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Ruins Excavations Ancient Rome Palatine Hill Sacra Via Capitolium Circus Maximus
The Ruins and Excavations of Ancient Rome by Rodolfo Lanciani. With a New Foreword by Richard Brilliant. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 617 pages. Publisher: Bell Publishing Company; 1979) ISBN: 0517289458. The crumbling ruins of ancient Rome serve as our most tangible link to the political. Social, and military greatness of the city of the Caesars. To the untrained eye these scattered stones and tarnished relics present an unfathomed array of styles, structures, and periods. But the story behind these relics is alive with everything that is human and vital; from glorious triumph or decadent corruption to the everyday traffic and commercial flux of urban life. Concealed in these ruins is the story of the organic development of the city from a collection of small farming towns to its ultimate position as capital of the largest unified ... morestate in the history of the western world. And it is Rodolfo Lanciani who has brought this story to abundant life. As Professor Richard Brilliant states in the foreword. the author’s infectious curiosity about Rome and his delight in her remains have been so successfully served by his friendly, unpedantic style. If Rome has so clearly built on the past, our knowledge of the past still depends very much on Lanciani. The author has placed the art and the architecture of the city on a time line, reflecting the constantly evolving ideas and spirit of the civilization as they developed over hundreds of years. In addition to this chronological approach, he has considered the structures and sites from topographical and architectural perspectives. Thus three systems of organization provide the prospective traveler or student with a detailed and stimulating knowledge of the ancient city that is ideally adaptable to his particular interest or area of study. The book is divided into four sections. The first is a general consideration of Rome’s topography and the way in which the city was adapted to it. Next is the description of the Palatine Hill. On which the city was founded and

18thC Antique Hungarian Opal Ancient Persia Lightening Gem
Antique Nineteenth Century Genuine Hungarian White Opal Semi-Precious Gemstones from Czechoslovakia! ORIGIN: Hungarian- Czechoslovakian Mines the Original Source of Opal for the Ancient Mediterranean World. Late Eighteenth or Early Nineteenth Century. SIZE: Length: 8mm. Width: 3mm. Thickness: 3mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.46 carats. DETAIL: Popular throughout the ancient Mediterranean. Early Persians believed opals fell from the heavens in flashes of lightning(which accounted for their fiery play-of-color) This is a very coarse solid white opal gemstone from mines in present-day Slovakia- the"Hungarian" mines which produced European opal from(evidence suggests) the sixth millennia B.C. through the early twentieth century. It was the discovery of much better quality opal in Australia in the late nineteenth century ... morewhich proved to be the undoing of this very ancient source of Opal. This specimen is quite typical of the lower quality product which was ordinarily produced during Medieval and Renaissance eras. For those unfamiliar with white opal, in its"unexcited" state(below for example) white opals appear ever so much like a translucent piece"milk" carnival glass so popular in the era of the 1930's to 1950's. They generally appear milky with very light iridescent luminescence(just like carnival milk glass) However when a light source strikes opal(above for example) higher quality specimens(especially Australian) are transformed into an iridescent wonder, an incredible rainbow of striking colors, patterns, and luminescence. The more expensive and high grade opals are almost psychedelic in their transfixing pattern of iridescent coloration. This particular specimen does not show any significant amount of"fire" Again, it is typical of the lower-grade stones mined and produced for"the common man" nearly a century ago. However at one time in the 18th and 19th centuries, opals were considered to be one of the world's most desirable gemstones, an

Golden Legacy Ancient Jewelry Technique Gems Cameo Byzantium Balkans Iraq Levant
A Golden Legacy: Ancient Jewelry from the Burton Y. Berry Collection at the Indiana University Art Museum by Wolf Rudolph. With an Essay by Barbara Deppert. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 332 pages. Publisher: Indiana University Art Museum; 1995) Jewelry is a necessary luxury. With costly materials and labor-intensive manufacture which establish it as extraordinary and sumptuous. Its nearly universal function as a commemoration of important passages, most notably engagements and weddings, deems it a necessity, even among the most austere of human beings. The urge to enhance our basic appearance with jewelry has evidently been part of human nature since our earliest beginnings. Thus the jewelry that survives, even from the most ancient of cultures, offers fascinating insights into our common humanity. For this and many other reasons, the vast holdings ... moreof ancient jewelry bequeathed by Burton Berry to the Indiana University Art Museum are most significant. Ambassador Berry was an indefatigable collector who assembled a remarkable collection tracing ancient jewelry from its beginnings in the Chalcolithic era to the early Christian and Byzantine ages. The collection tells us much about changing ideas. Technologies, and tastes which shaped and reshaped the ways in which gold and silver, gems and stones, were used to make adornments. In addition, the sampling presented within this text, assembled out of his collection, provides some fascinating glimpses beyond the traditional inner circle of Greene and Rome. The jewelry presented takes the reader to the outposts of the ancient world. To Anatolia and the Balkans, to Iraq and the Levant, which though far-flung, were nevertheless active and vital parts of the ancient cosmos. In a way, these distant places are even more fascinating than the heartland, as they combine native traditions and vigor with colonial and imperial styles and aesthetics. Because Burton Berry collected on the“edges” of the ancient Classical world, and because he was so knowledgeable as a collector, the re

PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: The Etruscan ... morecivilization is the name given today to the culture and way of life of people of ancient Italy whom ancient Romans called Etrusci or Tusci. The ancient Greeks' word for them was Tyrrhenoi. Or Tyrrsenoi. The Etruscans themselves used the term Rasenna, which was syncopated to Rasna or Ra?na. As distinguished by its own language, the civilization endured from an unknown prehistoric time prior to the foundation of Rome until its complete assimilation to Italic Rome in the Roman Republic. Numerous artifacts of Etruscan culture survived the Roman conquest. At its maximum extent during the foundation period of Rome and the Roman kingdom. It flourished in three confederacies: of Etruria, of the Po valley and Latium and of Campania. Rome was sited in Etruscan territory. There is considerable evidence that early Rome was dominated by Etruscans until the Romans sacked Veii in 396 BC. Culture that is identifiably and certainly Etruscan developed in Italy after about 800 B.C. approximately over the range of the preceding Iron Age Villanovan culture. The latter gave way in the seventh century to a culture that was influenced by Greek traders and Greek neighbors in Magna Graecia. The

Constantine and The Cross(1962) Starring: Cornel Wilde. Belinda Lee. Director: Lionello De Felice. DESCRIPTION: DVD: 120 minutes. The vast majority of this movie that centers on Constantine's personal life is pure fiction. However. That is not so bad; Gladiator" re-wrote history, too, but was nonetheless a great movie. And this movie does not fabricate history just to fabricate, but rather it does so with the objective of tying Constantine and Christianity together. One of the more notable scenes in which historical fact comes together with a fudging of Constantine's life is the arena scene. In this segment. Constantine jumps down into a pit where Christians are maliciously being slaughtered. Historically, the feeding-the-Christians-to-the-lions motif is right on. Under the emperor Galerius(ruled 305-311 A.D. shortly before Constantine ... moreascended to the throne) Christian persecution was at its height. While it is untrue that Constantine slew lions to save Christians, the arena scene nevertheless serves as an excellent depiction of incidents which really happened. The really notable quality of this movie lies in its portrayal of major historical happenings. Diocletian and Maximian really did abdicate the throne in 308. It is also true that his mother. Helena, was a Christian(although the details re: his relationship w/her in the movie are fictional) He did marry Fausta(although he had her and his eldest son Crispus put to death for treason in 326- long after the time period covered in this movie) The inclusion of Constantine's"divine vision" before his battle with Maxentius is essential; perhaps one of the defining moments in the entire history of Christianity. The actual battle itself is also given accurate treatment as Maxentius' cavalry was ambushed and trapped by Constantine's forces, just as the film claims. Overall it is well worth the time for anyone who is interested in Roman history, world history or the history of Christianity. CONDITION: Viewed once. Like New. PLEASE SEE

Early Persians believed opals fell from the heavens in flashes of lightning(which accounted for their fiery play-of-color) and when worn as a talisman, would protect against lightening strikes. The original ancient source of opal gemstones, known in Roman times, was in what is now East Slovakia. Elsewhere in the ancient world, the Romans used opal both for jewelry and in the production of cameos. Ancient Greeks, amongst many other ancient cultures, thought opals gave their owner the gift of prophecy and foresight, and prevented diseases. Here is an absolutely gorgeous. Natural"black" opal from Australia originally produced in the 1920's. This is a very uncommon gemstone, difficult to procure. The world's entire production of gemstone quality black opal comes from one claim in Australia known as"Lightening Ridge" This gemstone was originally solid black opal, however it was so thin that a backing was added so as to strengthen the gemstone and reduce its fragility. For those unfamiliar with black opal, it is somewhat akin to, if you will im
Ancient Roman Celtic Thrace (Bulgaria) Bronze Jewelry Plaque Bronze Brooch AD200
Handsome Ancient Roman Bronze Jewelry Plaque AD 200. CLASSIFICATION: Roman-Celtic Bronze Brooch. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Thracia) Third Century A.D. DETAIL: A very handsome plaque containing the decorative fascia of a Roman bronze brooch. The design likely of Celtic inspiration. There remains portions of the pivot and clasp on the underside of the brooch, but the pin was broken out, as well as the hinge pivot pin as well. The piece is rather fragile and thin, so rather than add a new pin, it seemed best to mount it. The diameter of the brooch is 35 millimeters(almost 1 1/2 inches) and it weighs 3.07 grams. The style is quite characteristic of the Roman Empire’s first through third centuries. A popular style 2,000 years ago, today it is a recognizable and not uncommon find. However inasmuch as the pins used to attach the brooch to ... moreclothing tended to be very fine, they are generally not recovered intact, having decomposed/oxidized over the centuries, especially if(as often was the case) they were made of iron. You can clearly see the unmistakable evidence that the brooch spent two thousand years buried. Though the artifact is still more or less in one piece(excepting the pin) It nonetheless evidences moderately heavy porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic soil) Unfortunately ancient metal, especially bronze and iron, tends to decompose in soil over the millennia. It is not too uncommon to unearth metal artifacts which are nothing more than crumbled stains within the soil(green for bronze, red for iron) Oftentimes in such circumstances you can see what was a metal artifact, but when touched it crumbles into the soil. Fortunately this bronze brooch was not unearthed in such an advanced state of decomposition. It obviously evidences considerably porosity(the fine surface pitting caused by oxidation) which kind of enhances its character, however the artifact is still intact. Jewelry was very popular in the Roman Empire. Rings. Earrings, pendants, and bracelets, fibulae, brooches
Stoic “Meditations”Ancient Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius of “Gladiator” Commodus
Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: 048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace ... moreand ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. Ametrine was subsequently introduced to Europe through the conquistador's gifts to the Spanish queen. You can think ... moreof Ametrine as a gemstone quality quartz crystal which when growing up could not decide whether it wanted to be an Amethyst or a Citrine, and so developed a“split personality” This is a very large, very clean, handcrafted faceted pear cut ametrine from the Anahi Mine in Bolivia. Imported for use in indigenous jewelry, the gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Ametrine is actually very rare in nature, having both the manganese traces which produce amethyst’s purple, as well as the iron traces which produce citrine’s yellow. The crystals must then be exposed to a variable source of heat, such as might be the case when a crystal partly encased in rock is exposed on one surface to sun shine. Slowly a portion of the gemstone will change color from amethyst’s purple to citrine’s yellow. This occurs rather rarely in nature. It seems that the ancient Mediterranean world knew of ametrine. The ancient source for ametrine was likely India via camel caravan through Persia. With the ancient source of ametrine lost and f

The result is an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of depth and gorgeous tone. It is not an absolutely flawless gemstone. With this particular specimen, to the eye, there are no significant blemishes. However with photo enlargement– or examination with a jeweler’s loupe, one can detect very slight color zoning. This means you might notice a slight variations in the tone, as well as a few internal blemishes. However to the eye it is quite beautiful and without flaw. It is only when you examine it under magnification you might be able to pick out some very minor color zoning and a minute blemish or two. Of course, the same can be said of most sapphires in general, and p

The origins of glass are shrouded in mystery. But according to tradition, it was accidentally discovered by a group of shipwrecked Phoenician sailors when lighting a fire on a sandy beach. When glass blowing was developed, many centers of glass manufacture sprang up and flourished around the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly in Syria and Alexandria. Meanwhile in Western Europe the art of glass making was established and spread under the benevolent eye of the Romans. Giovanni Mariacher traces the influence of these two traditions illustrating his text with marvelous examples of ... moreByzantine. Islamic, and Medieval glass.
