Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Marcus Aurelius reigned from 161 AD to 180 AD. And was perhaps the only true philosopher-king in the history of the world. Very popular in 18th and 19th century Victorian Scotland, ... morecitrine has remained a very popular gemstone through the 20th century. This gemstone was handcrafted into this sparkling faceted octagon late in the 19th century in Russia. The finished gemstone is also known within the trade as an“emerald cut” This is a very fine, richly colored golden yellow colored semi-precious gemstone, the color and flavor much like golden color honey. As you can see from the photo enlargements here, it is to the eye completely transparent and free from inclusions, and possesses exceptional sparkle and luster. It is very clean, water clear, and very bright. The trained eye will easily discern from the photo that the gemstone has been hand-faceted. The coarseness of the 19th century faceting is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors, and is not considered a detriment. Unlike today’s computer controlled machine processes, the cut and finish of a gemstone such as this is the legacy of an artisan who lived two centuries ago. Such antique hand-faceted gemstones possess much greater character and appeal than today's mass-produced machine-faceted gemstones. This gemstone has great luster and sparkle. And to the eye is completely transparent, but

Here's a very vibrantly hued, almost"neon" pink hand crafted ... moretourmaline cabochon round from the Southern Urals of Russia. Hand crafted by an 18th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Originally used in indigenous jewelry, this is a very beautiful and valuable semi-precious gemstone. Pink tourmaline is rather uncommon, probably the most valuable of the ordinary varieties of tourmaline. There is substantially more demand than supply, so thus oftentimes can be quite costly. The color of this specimen is a very rich and saturated, almost"neon" pink. Pink tourmaline was held in such high regard by the(last) Empress of China, Tz'u Hsi, that she purchased bought almost a ton of it from a mine in California, and was eventually laid to rest(eternally) on a carved tourmaline pillow. In fact, many of the Russian crown jewels are tourmaline. In the Victorian Age tourmaline was enormously popular not only in Russia, but throughout 18th and 19th century Europe. However much favored tourmaline was by European Renaissance and Victorian Royalty. Tourmaline tends to be characterized by the presence of small

Genuine Natural Antique Handcrafted Two Carat Rich. Regal Red Oval Cut Russian Garnet. ORIGIN: The Ural Mountains. Russia. 18th Century. CLASSIFICATION: Red Garnet Oval Oval. SIZE: Length: 8mm. Width: 6mm. Depth: 3mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: Approximately 1.89 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstone as a ring. Pendant, or into earrings. DETAIL: The ancients believed that a garnet could give its wearer guidance in the night. Allowing them to see when others could not. Due to its red color, ancient cultures including the Celts, Greeks, and Romans also associated it with blood, and thus garnet was thought to stop bleeding or bloodshed between enemies. Garnet was also worn for protection when traveling, and according to Jewish mythology, a giant garnet provided interior lighting for Noah's Ark. It is also believed ... morethat garnet, described as“nopek” was one of the twelve gemstones described in the Bible in Exodus 28:17-20 as adorning Aaron’s breastplate, representing the twelve tribes of ancient Israel. Here's a gorgeous, blood red garnet gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia, where the production of garnet has gone on for many centuries. This gorgeous gemstone was hand shaped and polished into this very beautiful oval cut cabochon by an 18th century Russian artisan. The cut is also known as an octagon. This lustrous semi-precious gemstone possesses a rich, velvety, regal, blood red hue. It is an extremely attractive gemstone, of very special character and remarkable color and texture. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: A gorgeous and vibrantly colored star sapphire precious gemstone from Mogok. Burma. This particular specimen is a beautiful violet color with blue undertones– depending on whether the light is white(outdoors) or yellow, it will vary between violet and violet-blue in color. It is quite striking, very handsome and gentle in tone, the color very soft and understated, the star quite beautiful. The gemstone was hand shaped ... moreand polished into this very beautiful oval cabochon by a 19th century Russian artisan for use in domestic jewelry. The result is an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of depth and gorgeous tone. It is not a flawless gemstone. Of course it is the alignment of included material which creates the star– so star sapphires always have included material. The question is, how noticeable? With this particular specimen to casual scrutiny it simply appears to be a beautiful, unblemished star sapphire. However close inspection will reveal a few variations in the tone and a few internal blemishes. Of course here in these photo enlargements these blemishes are quite obvious. But in hand, life-size, they simply are not discerned when casually viewed. It is only when you examine it very carefully that you will notice some color zoning and a minor flaw or two. Of course, the same can be said of most sapphires in general, and particularly star sapphires. Color zoning is quite common in sapphires, and unless very obvious, is generally not seriously detrimental. Known as a"star" sapphire because of an optical effect known as an"asterism" orie
