In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted, engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. Roman Provincial Moesia(Bulgaria) CLASSIFICATION: Roman Provincial Moesia Decorated Terra Cotta Oil Lamp. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Moesia. First Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 79 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 69 millimeters(2 5/8 inches) Height: 22 millimeters(7/8 inch) CONDITION: Good integrity. All original with no repairs. Some very hard and stubborn alkaline soil deposits inside of bowl. Moderate wear around fill hole consistent with use in the ancient world. DETAIL: This is a well preserved terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moseia. Present-day Bulgaria. The top surface of the oil ... morelamp portrays an impressed braided pattern around the rim of the fill hole, a little indistinct, but basically a geometric pattern of a chain of small rectangles. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct, but it seems to be a circle with a two characters inside the circle. It’s not possible really to determine whether they might have been letters or merely figures. But clearly the pedestal contains a trademark. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces. As can be seen the design elements of the vessel are even after the passage of almost 2.000 years, by and large intact intact. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nice design in such a well-preserved state– whole and relatively intact with no major breakage or repairs. The vessel was of course buried for somewhere around two thousand years in the soil. As a consequence of this prolonged burial there are some
RARE!! Dini E Cellai Signa Copper or Bronze Oil Lamp or Incense Holder
RARE! Dini E Cellai Signa Copper or Bronze Oil Lamp or Incense Holder You are bidding on this RARE item made by Dini E Cellai Signa. I am not sure exactly what it is. But my best guess is that it is an oil lamp or an incense holder. It has a reservoir in which you pour oil into the'mouth' of the figure and perhaps have wicks coming out of the three small holes near the handle. Or perhaps incense sticks are placed in the small holes. It appears to be solid copper or bronze. It has a lovely patina so it is old. There is a makers mark on the bottom and also a item NO. 341. The dimensions are 3.5" x 2" x 2.5" Please contact me with questions. Please see photos for more details. Thanks for shopping with me and good luck bidding! 18TH/19TH C. ITALIAN OLD MASTER OIL ON LINEN, ST ANTHONY OF PADUA W/CHRIST CHILD
Offered for your review and consideration is this incredible. Simply fantastic recently discovered and 100% untouched LATE 18TH- 19TH CENTURY ITALIAN OLD MASTER OIL ON LINEN OF" ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA WITH THE CHRIST CHILD. WITH ORIGINAL CHAMFERED STRETCHER. DEPICTING A FRANCISCAN FRIAR WITH AN ABANDONED CHILD WRAPPED IN WHITE LINEN, PULLING THE TASSELED ROPE BELL OF A LARGE OAK DOOR TO A MONASTERY. The oil on linen measures 9 3/4" in width x 11 3/4" in height. This extraordinary. Very recently'as found' discovery of this approximately late 18th/early 19th Century Italian Old Master oil on linen, of a Franciscan friar holding an abandoned baby, wrapped tightly in white linen, St. Anthony of Padua, ringing the roped bell of a monastery, is still nailed to its original period chamfered stretcher, with additional wooden ... moreside rails, that acted as extensions, attached to each side of the wooden stretcher. The painting was found without a frame, period or otherwise. The round nails on the linen seem to be later, which most likely means the piece was re-fastened to the stretcher at some point, due to its loosening and the sagging of the middle of the painting onto the wooden stretcher. This means the painting most likely was laying down for many years and the weight of the oil on the fine artist's linen, caused it to collapse onto the supporting wooden stretcher underneath. The refastening with later round nails was probably an attempt to tighten it to the stretcher. The stretcher itself is chamfered and very old. It seems to have had some kind of paper applied to the verso, quite possibly a dust cover of some sort, applied at a later date and since, partially removed. The painting only suffers from one very slight tear, which is quite minor and about 1/8" in length. No attempt has been made to repair it or to'in-paint' the area where the small tear occurs. The painting is in'100% completely untouched condition! It has not been cleaned. Since the surface grime is still present.
