This box has a rather Art Nouveau look to it. The box has a little drilled hole in the side of the base. Through which fine string or ribbon can be threaded and then pulled out beneath the top, but it can also be used as a standard box for holding paperclips or small items on a desk or dressing table. The item is nicely made and has an old paper label underneath which reads"Au Printemps" So I think this was orignally sold in France. Condition is overall very good. Vintage English Writing Lap Desk With Brass Hardware
This is a 1940's English Writing Lap Desk with brass inlay. These were often used by businessmen traveling on the road to store there paper. Ink, quills, etc. The table inside was then used to write on. They could then store all there documents safely in the chest under lock and key. Very popular with train rides. This particular piece doesn't have a key, but is a great show piece in a house. The writing table is as seen. The black stenciling material was very popular in the 1940's and is the original material. Where the writing table folds up has become damaged causing a separation right down the middle. The front leather is tooled fleur de lis along the edge and there is a snap. The snap opens to the black compartment which is pen. Clip and other storage and there is a place for papers. VINTAGE CARLTON HOUSE STYLE MAHOGANY WRITING DESK c. Mid 20th Century Item# 409UST06A This is a very attractive reproduction after the original Carlton House desk form. Probably executed during the middle of the 20th Century. The craftsmanship is quite fine, the drawers being solid oak with hand dovetailed framing and a chamfered bottom. The legs are solid mahogany with a thick reeded carving around the upper one-third, each terminating in fine brass castors. The desk features brilliant mahogany veneers over chipboard core edged along the top in a pierced brass gallery, the demiluned writing surface covered with a tooled gilt leather and a series of small drawers. The desk has mellowed rather nicely from sun exposure, the cognac and golden tones very attractive in our opinion, the whole remaining relatively untouched in the last half-century ... morewith it's original brasses and hardware throughout. An outstanding selection for anyone decorating in an English country style. This is an affordable alternative to an original and prohibitively expensive Carlton House writing desk. Measurements: 54 1/8" W x 30 1/16" D x 35 1/4" H; 30 3/8" H to writing surface; writing surface is 32 1/4" W x 20 3/16" D; 24" H to underside of desk(leg room) Condition Report: Light discolorations and sun bleaching to surfaces.
