I tried to capture the writing in a picture, but could only get the first part of the name. The name stands out the most. The rest of the writing, I believe would be where the owner lived and the year is much fainter. It looks like Maggie C Farr(something) something) 1876 or 1896. The box measures about 11 ¼” x 7 3/4” x 3 ½” closed) Opened and lying flat the desk measures about 16” long. The inside bottom felt writing surface that lifts up is tight and strong while the top felt writing surface that lifts up is wiggly, but still very much intact. Very nice old lap desk. The lid and supports have all the hardware intact. The lid opens to reveal a multi-cubby hole interior. It has four modern solid wood shelves that I don’t believe are original. The molding on the double door top is unusual chain style going around both doors. It is a heavy duty solid wood desk. There is a crack in the lid as shown in the photos. The glass on the top on the left-hand door has a space in the top. It is very usable. It is in a dark oak stain finish.

It measures 16" by 9" by 4 1/2" The exotic wood veneer(possibly ... moremahogany) has a very dramatic and variable grain that ranges from amber to black. The exquisite top features a radiant Mother of Pearl Cartouche( 2" by 1" with no engravings or markings) It has eight Mother of Pearl Discs that are positioned near the corners. The discs are connected by pewter'stringing lines' to form two rectangles on the top. I believe that the two shortest pewter'stringing lines' on the ends of the inner rectangle may be replacement pieces. There are also four Mother of Pearl discs on the front of the box. Connected by pewter'stringing lines' These also form a rectangle. The escutcheon has an inlay that is a bone color. But does not appear to be Mother of Pearl. The top opens to reveal a green velvet fabric-covered writing slope which appears to be original. There are five separate compartments for ink wells. Nibs, wax, stamps etc. There is also a removable concave pen tray with storage space beneath it. The green velvet-covered'top partition' pulls down with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. The storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 7 1/4" For stationary. The green velvet-covered'bottom partition' pulls open with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. This storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 5" For letters. The hinges and fittings are brass and there is a flush brass handle on each end of the box. There is a small chip in the veneer on the left front corner(photo#3) There is a 1/2" segment of the pewter'stringing line' that is missing in the same area. There are some cracks in the veneer on the top. The left side of the top and the front. There are cracks in the interior linings of the box. Antique Style Mahogany Writing Desk Made by Sligh USA
This is a very nice pretty clean writing desk. I would say the top is solid mahogany the rest is a veneer. The brass handles are all original and solid brass. The drawers all run fine. You do have either side a file drawer. The top drawer has the makers label( Sligh Holland Michigan) not really sure if they are still in business. L would guess the desk is around 30 years old, but would be a better quality desk than some they make today. The gold on the top is a little worn at the front as you will see in the picture but the leather is in pretty good condition. Measurements are 56 wide.26 deep,30 high, and the knee hole is 24 wide,24 1/2 high.

This amazing French Louis XV Writing Table Desk was an estate find. It looks to be wood veneer with an intricate black leather inlay with gold guilt edging. The desk is lined with heavy brass embellishments along the edges and has ormolu mounts. The front has 3 locking drawers with the keys for each one and they work fine. The desk has faux drawers on the side and backside. So that it can be a centerpiece in the room.
