1874 Route Map of Capt Jones from his Reconnoissance of Northwestern Wyoming in 1873. This is route map number 4 covering from the Green River to Big Sandy River in Southwestern Wyoming. It shows Jones' camp number 7 to camp number 8. Big Sandy and Green River mail stations are illustrated. The original maps were not colored. This map was hand washed colored added at some time for a reason I could not determined. Map is about 7 by 14 inches. Map has ben backed by archival tape on the vertical fold line with some minor loss of paper near the four fold corner. The top of the same fold line has archival tape on the back with a little paper loss at the edge of the sheet. There is a pencil notation on the upper left corner of the sheet. An ORIGINAL antique 1868 map of The TERRITORIES of DAKOTA. MONTANA, IDAHO WYOMING and NEBRASKA from JOHNSON'S New Illustrated FAMILY ATLAS. This rare and interesting map shows a HUGE DAKOTA TERRITORY and the recently formed TERRITORIES of IDAHO. MONTANA, and WYOMING which were carved out of an even LARGER IDAHO TERRITORY in 1864. The map shows the old route of the PONY EXPRESS which was discontinued in 1861 after the completion of a Transcontinental Telegraph Cable. The map also shows the UNION PACIFIC TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD under construction at the time. The map shows the rail line completed as far west as EVANS PASS WYOMING and shows the surveyed route west of there. The railroad would be completed a year later in 1869. Several Emigrant Roads are shown crossing WYOMING and MONTANA and 2 proposed routes for a NORTHERN PACIFIC TRANSCONTINENTAL ... moreRAILROAD are shown across the DAKOTA TERRITORY and MONTANA. What makes Johnson's maps so desirable is that although many maps from this time period showed railroad routes. His also show major stagecoach and wagon roads. This map shows dozens of these roads. The map also shows the location of dozens of Western Indian Tribal lands as well as newly discovered gold and silver regions. This is a RARE and interesting map with a HUGE amount of detail on it. Note there is a 3 inch separation along the top end of the page fold line but no loss of paper. Among the finest maps produced during the 19th Century. Johnson's maps were used extensively during the Civil War. The map measures 26 by 18 inches and is perfect for matting and framing.
