Printed more than 156 years ago. This map is drawn on a scale of 18 miles to one inch and shows the progress of the public surveys as these lands were opening up to settlement. The image area measures 17-1/2" x 21-1/4" And the map locates forts, towns, Indian treaty lines, reservations, and natural features. The map was compiled under the direction of Warner Lewis. Surveyor General, in Dubuque, Iowa, and is dated October 21, 1855. It was lithographed by A. Especially at the top, and one about 2" long in the crease. Tear at top is about 2" also, but only goes about 1/2" into the image. Recently ceded to the United States. Map dated 1864 under the direction of Surveyor General G.D. Hill. A few highlighted hand colored areas. Showing the Ponka Reserve, the Fort Randall military reserve, the Yankton Reserve, and an Indian Reserve. The run of the Missouri River. the towns and villages with a hand painted red dot showing their locations. A nice map opening the territory to"sod-busters" Map folded as issued. some archive acid free mending on reverse, hard to see. Mends the fold tear here and there. During that time, the post provided military protection to settlements along the Missouri River, escorted many wagon trains and survey parties, and served as the central military supply depot for the area. ORIGINAL 1883 NEW RAILROAD AND COUNTY MAP OF DAKOTA TERRITORY AND MANITOBA
Antique. Original, 1883( New Railroad and County Map of Dakota and Manitoba" I am not positive of the exact date, but it is pre-1889, because it shows the Dakota Territory, prior to North and South Dakota becoming States in 1889. Some of the Railroad Lines include the Northern Pacific line in Dakota, and the Canadian Pacific line in Manitoba. The map also shows, Counties, Towns, and Indian Reservations and U.S. Forts. The wood frame is 19 1/2" long by 15 1/2" wide, looks to be antique, and has ornate carvings, but does show signs of wear, including a nail in the bottom left corner. The map looks to be in very good solid shape for 130 years old, with no rips or tears, it has a fold/crease in the middle running left to right, with some light staining on the left side. Interesting and detailed map printed during the Civil War. Shows chief cities. County seats and road system. The proposed"Route of the Pacific Railroad" is located. Beautifully executed. Attractive hand color, will frame nicely. Overall good condition with moderate ageing. Low starting bid with no reserve. Postage charge is for domestic insured priority mail.
