TITLE: Preliminary Geological Map of the Yellowstone National Park DESCRIPTION: A map from the Wyoming Atlas of the U. S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. F. V. Hayden Geologist in Charge which accompanied the survey's Twelfth Annual Report documenting work done in 1879 but published in 1883. The map shows the park on a scale of 2 miles to an inch and with topography indicated by 100 foot contour intervals. Geological characteristics are called out with 18 printed colors. In Mapping the Transmississippi West Carl Wheat says(including an uncolored topographic map not included here) Between the two, Yellowstone cartography was placed on a vastly higher level; these must be regarded as the first modern maps of the Park. Remember, the second, uncolored map he mentions is not included. The sheet measures 35 3/4 by 29 ... moreinches. This an original map published in 1883. Not a facsimile or reproduction. CONDITION: Some soil and browning to the folds. Left margin close with loss of parts of the neat line and some edge chipping of the left edge with no loss of data.
