This map is based upon a General Land Office map of Wyoming which is why the areas to the south and east of the park are included Park County, Teton County and portions of Fremont, Hot Springs and Big Horn Counties. TITLE: Preliminary Geological Map of the Yellowstone National Park DESCRIPTION: A map from the Wyoming Atlas of the U. S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. F. V. Hayden Geologist in Charge which accompanied the survey's Twelfth Annual Report documenting work done in 1879 but published in 1883. The map shows the park on a scale of 2 miles to an inch and with topography indicated by 100 foot contour intervals. Geological characteristics are called out with 18 printed colors. In Mapping the Transmississippi West Carl Wheat says(including an uncolored topographic map not included here) Between the two, Yellowstone cartography was placed on a vastly higher level; these must be regarded as the first modern maps of the Park. CONDITION: Some soil and browning to the folds. Left margin close with loss of parts of the neat line and some edge chipping of the left edge with no loss of data. Grand Teton and Yellowstone Park Forest Reserve1898 color map National Park. This is an original printed color map titled: Teton Forest Reserve and Southern Part of Yellowstone Park Forest Reserve. Showing Land Classification and Wooded Areas. This is rather a large 16 by 20 inch sheet map published by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1898. The map scale is about 1:240.000 with a contour interval of 200 feet. The map sheet is about 15 ¾ by 20 ½ inches. Folded to about 6 ¾ by 10 1/4 inches. This is an original color map. Printed in 1898, not a reproduction. It is a nice looking map that shows The Grand Tetons. Jackson Lake, and surrounding areas. It shows the area that is now the Grand Teton National Park, a very small part of Yellowstone Park, and some area to the south, including the Gros Ventre Mountains. It is a topographic ... moremap(does NOT show roads and towns) which is overprinted with colors that show land classes. There are four land classes in the legend: 1. Agricultural Land; 2. Coniferous Timber; 3. Quacking Aspen; and 4. Burned Areas. This large map would make a great display item. The overprint colors make a very pleasing patter. Its reference value is enormous as this is the first professional survey of these forest reserves. Which later became National Parks and Forests and shows the conditions as of 120 years ago. This is a rare map, only found now in research libraries. My scanner bed is too small to show the entire map. I have given a small section of the map to show the detail level of the map. An image of the folded map is posted to show condition. The map is in very good condition. Especially for a 100-year-old map. Note it was issued folded to fit the size of the Report volumes. The paper has yellowed very slightly. And overall the map sheet is slightly worn from handling. There are two extra, light fold lines. The regular fold lines are not very heavy. Someone has marked in pencil several corner crosses which are very light and not noticeable except by a very close view. The number 4
