For sale is JOHNSON'S MAP of MINNESOTA and DAKOTA. Original hand outlining and coloring from the period. Steel engraved map. Map size 42 cm x 34 cm. Museum matted and framed. Frame measures 24" x 28" Condition is excellent. A graphic illustration of the border between the nascent development of the mid-west and the wilds of the western United States. This map. Clearly acquired from the earlier efforts of the Colton firm, shows Minnesota within a few years of statehood, and the eastern portion of what became the Dakota Territory in 1861. Minnesota is shown broken into counties, and the southeast into survey quadrants. Towns, roads, and other signs of progressing settlement are indicated. To the west, the part of Dakota illustrated is devoid of counties and railroads, and only five towns are large enough to be indicated. An ORIGINAL antique 1868 map of The TERRITORIES of DAKOTA. MONTANA, IDAHO WYOMING and NEBRASKA from JOHNSON'S New Illustrated FAMILY ATLAS. This rare and interesting map shows a HUGE DAKOTA TERRITORY and the recently formed TERRITORIES of IDAHO. MONTANA, and WYOMING which were carved out of an even LARGER IDAHO TERRITORY in 1864. The map shows the old route of the PONY EXPRESS which was discontinued in 1861 after the completion of a Transcontinental Telegraph Cable. The map also shows the UNION PACIFIC TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD under construction at the time. The map shows the rail line completed as far west as EVANS PASS WYOMING and shows the surveyed route west of there. The railroad would be completed a year later in 1869. This auction is for the map of Minnesota map from the Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World. By Prof. A.Guyot. There is an inset of the British Possessions. Of the state maps I have listed from this atlas, this is probably the nicest single state map. It is in its original unrestored condition. The colors(all hand colored) are still very vibrant and all of the map is still very readable. The seam is complete and shows little wear or staining. This is a very nice two page map. These maps were given to me from an estate to sell. I say this for transparency. As I will not be of much help in grading the shape of the maps. However, I will answer any question as quickly as I can. I do have the entire book(covers are in very poor condition) but it has already been split up. This map is from Johnson's New Family Atlas. Published by Johnson& Ward in 1864. This antique authentic map shows Johnson's MINNESOTA and DAKOTA by Johnson& Ward The map was printed on newsprint paper which has yellowed and has some areas of discoloration and age staining. Which can be viewed in the photographs. There are also small tears at some edges. It measures just over 18 inches by about 14 inches. However. It's a wonderful old piece, and would be great framed, for a collector of antique maps. I am selling all of the maps from the Atlas. In separate auctions. This is a hand-colored lithographed"Johnson's Wisconsin and Michigan" map. Circa 1864, by A.J. Johnson, New York. Measuring about 18" x 26-5/8" it is numbered"57-58" and appears to have been taken from an atlas or gazetteer. Condition is remarkable for its 150 years on this earth. It has been archivally preserved for some 30+ years. There is a vertical fold at center. But I see no other major condition issues. Please see the enlargeable photo to judge condition for yourself. I have to apologize for the image; I had to take it with a camera as the map would not fit onto my scanner. The map will be mailed to the buyer rolled in a sturdy tube. J. Johnson's significant 1866 map of the Idaho. Montana, Wyoming, Dakota and Nebraska. Johnson first introduced this map in 1865 to accommodate a renewed interested in this region following the close of the American Civil War. During the Civil War period the vast Washington and Nebraska territories had been divided up into smaller territories including Idaho(1863) Montana(1864) and Dakota(1861) Though largely controlled by various American Indian nations, this region was becoming increasingly attractive for settlement and development. The proposed Governor Stevens route for the Northern Pacific Railroad passed through this region, as this ... moreregion as did the more favorable Central Pacific Railroad route and, to a lesser extent, the proposed Union Pacific Railroad route. This is also the first Johnson map to incorporate Wyoming- which is absent from the 1865 edition of this map. Note that, though Wyoming is demarked as a territory, the lettering of the territorial title is in a light outline typeface- a sharp contrast to the bold titles for Montana, Dakota, and Idaho. This is due to the fact that though the territory of Wyoming had been proposed by Representative J. M. Ashley of Ohio in 1865, it was considered a temporary measure. The region was not officially incorporated as a territory until 1868. This early configuration of the territory also truncates the border with Montana at 44.5 degrees north latitude, giving Wyoming a curious ephemeral western panhandle. Within Montana the western portions beyond the Rocky Mountains, are highlighted and identified as Missoula. In 1865 this region had only recently been settled by traders and missionaries.
