The ring once bore a very elaborate pattern on the sides of the band probably almost all the way around to the back. A similarly elaborate pattern embellished the circumferential ledge/skirt of the bezel, as well as an intricate perimeter of finely serrated“teeth” surrounding and securing the gemstone. As you can see(with some difficulty, but look particularly at the middle of the bracelet and one end) the surface of the bracelet bears a fairly complex series chevrons(V” engraved into the top surface of the bracelet, done in such a manner that the point of the inverted“V” is at the very apex of the slightly crowned band, so one arm of the“V” drops to either side of the band. It was when created a fairly sophisticated and surely costly bracelet. The bracelet was not recovered entirely intact, as you can see, but originally it would have been of a reasonable good size considering the slight build of ancient Romans(the ancient population tended to be considerably smaller than contemporary populations) Originally the two ends of the bracelet would have come close to meeting one another. However the trailing ends of each side by their nature were quite thin and fairly fragile, and susceptible to loss through either breakage or corrosion. Ancient Medieval Bronze Geometric Symbol Ring Very Intetesting!
For your consideration is a very unique and interesting geometric symbol designed bezel bronze ring. That dates to about the 13th century. It is in fine condition, and measures 19.5mm on the inside diameter. There is much speculation as to what this symbol means among cultures. Many see it as the symbol for the star of Bethleham. Others as a mysterious cosmic symbol for the infinity of the stars; with a never ending focal point in the center. It has also been seen as the symbol for the snowflake; and a sybmbol very similar had even been seen in a crop circle. This would be a very good addition to any ancient or medieval ring collection. RARE ANCIENT BYZANTINE FISH SHAPED LARGE POTTERY FLASK 12.5" BEAUTIFUL!!
Very rare ancient pottery fish flask I was told this is Byzantine period around 1000 AD possibly but I am not completely certain so I have taken many photos for your expertise to judge. Fish measures 12 1/2" long and 4" high at tallest. This flask has been repaired around the mouth area is a few places and although the repairs are well done. You can see the lines where it was broken. I do not see evidence of damage or repairs anywhere else on fish and this flask looks complete with no missing pieces. I believe this flask was probably retrieved from the ocean as there are white crust-like material on the surface which almost looks like traces of barnicles and there is a crusty brownish-white substance on one side like deposits or barnicles again. There are cross and other symbols on fish I do not know what they stand for but perhaps ... morethe photos will help you. There is a spout hole in the the fish's mouth and one on top as well as hanging holes on the fins probably for tying around the neck. I found this piece in central Maine from a long-time antiquities collector and he is the one who told me it was probably BYZANTINE period. Please let me know if you know more about this piece as I am not an expert and rely on the expertise of collectors to educate me in this field. Late 16th century 18k gold Hippocamp Pendant with large Baroque Pearls
Late 16th century 18k gold Hippocamp Pendant with large Baroque Pearls This solid 18k Hippocamp pendant is estimated at late 16th century as there are a few others found in private collections and museums around the world notably the British Museum and Chicago Museum of Arts a few of which have been adorned at later dates with other gems but this piece I have up for offer is untouched and only has the very large baroque pearls and the original enamel which is in very good condition I did take this to a antique jeweler expert and wanted his opinion and he felt it was a pretty important and significant piece and very old. It was tested as 18k gold and the jeweler didn't want to take any more rubbing's and wanted to find a jeweler that had a"electronic tester" but said it was at the very least 18k. He believes that this is ... morea rather large gold pendant in the form of a Hippocamp(sea dragon) suspended from a gold chain. After some research on the Internet I believe that this pendant is from the late 16th century and is most probably either the work of an Italian or Spanish goldsmith. There are a few references at the British Museum's website several examples of gold Hippocamp pendants which are very similar to this one down to the pigment of the enamel. The body of the Hippocamp is covered in a hard fired enamel gold and has two baroque pearls set into the body and tail the largest pearl is 16mm x 21mm and sits 12mm from the body. It has two baroque pearl drops from the main body. The piece weighs 59.6 grams. The dimensions are as follows: height 8.7 centimeters(from the top to the bottom of the drop pearls) 6.0 centimeters(from the top to the bottom excluding the drop pearls) Length 7.4 centimeters from the front of the head to the end of the tail and depth at it's thickest point is 2.3 centimeters. Although enameled with a different color scheme much of the enamel is the same pigment colors this piece somewhat resembles a piece in the British Museum's collection that I have linked to her
