Early Byzantine Bronze Fixed Plate Buckle CULTURE/ REGION OF ORIGIN: Byzantine Empire DATE: 5 th-6 th Century AD DIMENSIONS: 3.1 cm(1.22 in. long DESCRIPTION: Intact. An early Byzantine bronze military buckle. With an oval shaped loop, integral plate that is trapezoidal in shape with a rounded point at the end, simple molded decoration on the front side and a circular hole for the pin through which the pin is wrapped. On the reverse is a small narrow rectangular plate, which is undecorated and would have been used to create the necessary tension to fix a leather belt strap to the buckle. Both plates are fixed together by means of two circular copper alloy rivets. Medium green patina. This type of buckle is associated with the early Byzantine military and would have served as a strap buckle for body armor or other gear associated with a soldier's ... morekit and has much in common with earlier Roman examples. PROVENANCE: Formerly in an Essex. UK private collection. COMPARISONS: See Roman Buckles and Military Fittings.
