CONDITION: Very good. Complete but likely repaired(professionally, probably by a conservator) Fairly uncommon style. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. Heavy layer of iridescence and soil deposits caused by prolonged burial in soil) DETAIL: This is a very handsome first century A.D. Roman blown glass vial of reasonably nice dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ and 3 inches in size. This specimen is over 3 inches tall! It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted. Engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the medium-sized pieces such as this, and even smaller sized pieces are rarely recovered intact except

CLASSIFICATION: Silver/Bronze Alloy Ring with Oval Ruby Red Colored Glass“Gemstone” ATTRIBUTION: Constantinople(Ancient Turkey) 17-18th Century A.D. SIZE/DIMENSIONS(all measurements approximate) Size: 9(U.S. Inner Diameter: 19mm. Overall Diameter: 26mm*22mm. Bezel/Gemstone: Length: 15mm. Width: 11mm. Height: 5mm. No significant porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Very fine finish. DETAIL: A very large and intricate silver/bronze alloy ring of late Byzantine/early Renaissance origin. Probably seventeenth ... moreor eighteenth century, provenance is Eastern Europe. The ring bears a very elaborate pattern all the way around the band which is entirely extant except that it is moderately worn, especially toward the back of the band. However despite the moderate wear, the entire intricate design is still discernable. This would be normal wear caused by the hand being held flat on a table…and the back of the ring coming in contact with objects during normal daytime activities(such as holding table utensils, etc) Likewise the bezel is intricately executed, with tiny little serrated teeth retaining the“gemstone” again showing some flatness from wear, but still intact. As described. There is some wear to the bands, and the elaborate pattern is worn flat to a moderate degree. But of course, some signs of wear are to be expected from a ring several centuries old. It was produced with the idea that someone would purchase it and wear it– and that is exactly what happened. It is clear that several centuries ago this was amongst someone’s favorite rings, and that they wore it with pleasure and frequency. However the entirety of the intricate metalwork pattern remains intact and d

Rare Byzantine Medieval bronze ring Ring is in good condition and absolutely intact. Measuring 20 mm. inside diameter about size 10 US. Origina l brown patina. No t cleaned. Exactly as pictured. Original gl ass paste insert still remains intact. Authenticity guaranteed. In ancient times since banks did not exist. Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings represented the language of social code, and connoted one’s social standing. Under the Empire, the finger ring was still considered a privilege, conferred for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was more freely bestowed. Even so, ... morethe ring retained its position as a mark of dignity, as a rich ornament, as an important seal, and as a token of betrothal. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home. 18th century ring byzantine green glass with hanging pearl. 925 silver & Bronze
This is without a doubt the most unusual ring I've ever laid eyes on. Another purchase at a European auction. One side of the ring has a 925 stamp. Quite hard to read. The other side appears to be made of bronze. There is a green glass stone on the bronze side and white glass with a pearl on the silver side. It is just so fascinating. It weighs 9.3 grams and is a size 5.25 although with the open setting it could be altered. While I'm not sure of it's actual age. It shows great patina and filigree work on either side of the ring. Enjoy! Free Shipping US& Canada Please see my other lovely items and THANK YOU! Hello to you all. I am an avid collector of all things. Who has recently become disabled. I desperately needed something to do with my time. Please note that I am not a licensed dealer. Or jeweler, just a collector and ... moretry not to misrepresent anything I sell. Nowadays there are a lot of ruins older than 2000 years in this region. I like ancient beads very much and want that other collectors will be able to obtain them without paying a lot of money. That is why my prices are very modest. I lived in Asgabat city(the capital of Turkmenistan) over 30 years. About 15 km from Asgabat there is Nisa– former residence of Alexander the Great. And capital of Parthia. In most cases the ancient beads. Not only played the role of jewelry but also the status of the person wearing them. You were able to tell the social status of an individual based on the beads they were wearing, while other used these beads as talismans protecting themselves against bad luck and the evil eye. Certain beads that have zigzagging lines are supposed to confuse the evil eye which would get lost in these lines. Beads that have the image of an eye try to just absorb the evil energy, and thus protect the person who is wearing them. Periodically the beads would be washed in salt water, because it is believe the salt water kills the negative energy. The image of the eye was sometimes

In the Byzantine Empire jewelry played an important role. It acted as a way to express ones status and as a diplomatic tool. In 529 AD. Emperor Justinian took up laws regulating the wearing and usage of jewelry in a new set of laws, later to be called the Justinian Code. He explicitly writes that sapphires, emeralds and pearls are reserved for the emperor's use but every free man is entitled to wear a gold ring. This may tell us something about the widespread use and great popularity of jewelry. One could easily argue that there hadn't been a need for such a law if jewelry had been a purely aristocratic phenomenon. The Byzantine Empire was wealthy. It had gold mines within its borders and its geographical position was perfect for trade between the East and West. Successful traders. Military officers and high officials in the empire's administration would all have been in the position to afford luxurious jewelry. Antique Byzantine Roman Glass Tube Vial
I am selling an excavated Byzantine Glass vial. As pictured. It does not come with documentation, but I have had it looked at by an expert and he confirmed that it is Byzantine glass, probably 1500 years old. It has been repaired, and the top part is a resin that was attached to the larger piece of glass to complete the original shape. Comes with stand, as pictured. If for some reason you are not happy with it I do accept returns no questions asked as long as it arrives back in one piece.
