Rare Byzantine Medieval silver ring Ring is in good condition and absolutely intact. Measuring 20-21 mm. inside diameter about size 10.5 US. 4.88 gm. Origina l brown patina. Authenticity guaranteed. In ancient times since banks did not exist. Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings represented the language of social code, and connoted one’s social standing. Under the Empire, the finger ring was still considered a privilege, conferred for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was more freely bestowed. Even so, the ring retained its position as a mark of dignity, as a rich ornament, ... moreas an important seal, and as a token of betrothal. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home. Ancient Medieval Crusader Bronze Signet Ring; Rare!
For your consideration is a nice bronze signet Crusader ring with markings that is unique to the Crusaders and or Knights Templars. This ring dates to about the 12th century. And measures 20mm on the inside diameter. It still makes a decent seal, after centuries in the ground! This piece was worn a lot apparently. And most likely worn by the knight or crusader in some battles, as you can see from the small fracture on the top. Bronze is a very hard material. And only a very hard blow from a material equally as strong( like a sword) could fracture it. It doesn't appear to have been caused by anything else, as it was inspected closely. This adds to the history of this ring. And makes it more interesting, as stories always do with artifacts. Thank you for viewing the auction and don't miss the opportunity to grab this one. At a fair ... moreprice!

About The Byzantine Jewelry Byzantine jewelry was a full continuation of the Roman traditions which were kept alive behind the high walls of the new capital. Constantinople. Byzantine jewelry had a huge influence on the manufacturing of personal decoration in the rest of the medieval world. In the Byzantine Empire jewelry played an important role. It acted as a way to express ones status and as a diplomatic tool. In 529 AD. Emperor Justinian took up laws regulating the wearing and usage of jewelry in a new set of laws, later to be called the Justinian Code. He explicitly writes that sapphires, emeralds and pearls are reserved for the emperor's use but every free man is entitled to wear a gold ring. This may tell us something about the widespread use and great popularity of jewelry. One could easily argue that there hadn't been a need for such a law if jewelry had been a purely aristocratic phenomenon. The Byzantine Empire was wealthy. It had gold mines within its borders and its geographical position was perfect for trade between the East and West. Successful traders. Military officers and high officials in the empire's administration would all have been in the position to afford luxurious jewelry. In an attempt to keep jewelry exclusive Justinian ruled that only he got to decide who wore the finest jewels by presenting his favorite'servants' with presents from the imperial workshops. Ancient Medieval Bronze Catholic or Jesuit Priest Signet Ring 14th to 15th C.
For your consideration is a fine Medieval bronze signet ring that dates from the 14th to 15th century. The ring depicts the letters IHS. A crusader type cross, and what seems to be an olive branch. IHS is a monogram for Jesus Christ that has been used since the first century. The Roman Catholic Church is most known for using it; although a lot of other Christian sects used it as well. Such as in Byzantium, and later in The Russian Orthodox Church. This ring measures 19.5mm on the inside diameter. Cursory cleaning was performed to get the debris off of it from excavation. And to be able to read the monogram and other etchings, but the inside was not touched. This ring could be fully restored further or be left as is. It is fully wearable. And in great condition for it's considerable age. It still makes a fairly good seal! Thanks for viewing ... morethe auction!

Ancient Medieval Bronze Geometric Symbol Ring Very Intetesting!
For your consideration is a very unique and interesting geometric symbol designed bezel bronze ring. That dates to about the 13th century. It is in fine condition, and measures 19.5mm on the inside diameter. There is much speculation as to what this symbol means among cultures. Many see it as the symbol for the star of Bethleham. Others as a mysterious cosmic symbol for the infinity of the stars; with a never ending focal point in the center. It has also been seen as the symbol for the snowflake; and a sybmbol very similar had even been seen in a crop circle. This would be a very good addition to any ancient or medieval ring collection. Thanks for looking!

Medieval St George Engraved Bronze Ring 11th to 13th Century; Extremely Rare ExF
For your consideration is an extremely rare engraved bronze ring that translates to" George" meaning St George; upon doing more research. It was most likely a Bishop, Monk, or Priest ring. It measures 19mm on the inside diameter and has a great patina; it is in Extra Fine condition and a very rare piece. I have collected ancient antiquities for quite some time now and haven't seen a duplicate of this kind yet; if similar ones exist, the number is very small indeed. I am offering this piece with no reserve. This would be a fine addition to your collection of Byzantine, Roman, or even British; since it is related to Medieval Britain as well, indirectly of course. St. George is the Patron Saint of people in the military. And the official Patron Saint of England. Thanks for viewing the auction!
