It's unmarked as to maker. I think it's likely circa early to mid-1900s. I believe it's in original condition. It has one interior. Multi-sectioned drawer on hinges(in need of minor repair-see below) It's constructed of walnut veneer with cedar lining, and secondary hardwood(s) The back is unfinished. Wonderful for storage and display or seating, it's both beautiful and superbly useful. CONDITION: Overall. I think it's in nice vintage condition. Solid and sturdy. Only the tiniest bit of veneer loss that I can see: a few tiny chips along the back edge. Minor nicks, imperfections normal to vintage furniture. It does have some flaws: 1) the top surface has superficial scratches and age-related splits in the veneer(but they seem shallow enough to me that I think just polyurethane(were the top refinished) and/or a walnut-tone pore filler would be enough to fill them for a flawless(or nearly so) top. 2) In the interior. Lid, left side, the wood affixing the screw supporting the pull-out shelf is stripped(please see photos; the drawer is just propped in place in the photo) so is in need of this repair. I'd probably suggest filling the oversized hole with wood scraps and glue to fill, then redrilling the hole(possibly a larger screw would work) this is left to the buyer. 3) The locks on these old chests pose a safety hazard to children(won't open from within; children can suffocate inside) and can't be sold with the lock in place. I've removed and discarded it. Leaving just the hardware(for aesthetics) so it simply opens and closes, and can be opened from inside. THANK YOU. Here is a stunning and very desirable approximately 150 year old antique Japanese small Choba tansu. Or merchant's chest, dating from the Meiji Era around the mid to late 1800's, featuring a lock bar in the center and classical safe compartment at the bottom right. It boasts a natural light colour with a rich honey patina, beautifully shaped hand forged iron hardware, wood peg construction and 8 drawers of various sizes that provide versatile storage options including a full width drawer at the top. It is in excellent overall condition for it's age. But has a little lock issue: as there is no key and the top drawer lock is in the closed position with the drawer open it will not shut all the way. The safe compartment has a tendency to swing open by itself since there is no key to lock it. The lock issue does NOT affect the lock bar which slides in and out of place properly. Please read the description and examine the photos for more details on the condition. Locksmiths and larger antique dealers will own sets of multiple keys to fit a broad range of locks so you should be able to get the drawer unlocked easily enough so it slides into place. With a little patience you could also find an antique key that fits right here on ebay(I can recommend a seller who regularly stocks this type of item) Other small issues worth noting are a small repair in the bottom corner of the smallest drawer just above the safe compartment. The larger top drawer is stiff to open and close due to age and needs a tweak, and one corner plate in the back is bent out of shape. Given it's age there is some wearing off of the blackening of a few small spots of the iron, and a couple of small nails are missing. Hello. You are viewing my sale for an Antique Sturdi Cedar Chest By Francis F. Hamilton. This is a"Margeret No. 580" according to the indentation on the bottom. This chest has an Early Patent Date of"Aug. 26, 1924" and the final date reads"March 9, 1926" These dates as well as others are indented on the bottom as well. This may have been a salesman sample of a larger size chest that was identical to this smaller chest. This is only my guess however. This chest measures when closed 4 and 1/2" tall by 12 and 3/4" long by 8 and 1/2" wide. On the interior there is a green felt fabric as well as a gold lace trim. There are the letters" K E V N" stuck to the interior section plastic dividers. This appears to be a modern add on for someone who owned this before. Beautiful Rare 1927 Antique Lane Cedar Hope Blanket Chest Style# 48910 This Lane Hope Chest was made on May. 9th 1927 In 1912 John Edward Lane bought a small packing-box plant in Altavista. Virginia at a bankruptcy auction for $500. Placed in charge of the small, corrugated iron building, his son Edward Hudson Lane decided to convert the facility in order to make cedar chests. The Lane family was unsure of what success they would have selling chests, so they originally named the company The Standard Red Cedar Chest Co. The firm manufactured and sold chests used to store linens and other items for setting up housekeeping, as well as keepsakes. Early production of about ten chests a day was sold through independent salesmen working on commission. In its early days. The business was run on a shoestring budget. Offering this very attractive antique Lane small profile Cedar Chest style#336 with a manufacturing date of July 26. 1927. This petite beauty is just 36 inches wide, 17 1/2 inches deep and just 14 1/2 inches tall. It could have been or could be slightly taller if the caster feet were replaced. It has two copper or brass plated gate post looking straps which is a nice matching add to the fine petina of the cedar wood. There are some rough marks and finish misses, heavy on left front edge and some other visible scratch markings in other areas of the lid. See Photos. Obtained at an estate sale. Do not know the history but it is a really unusual and a very early piece. Not sure of age but appears to be 19th century. Is painted gray all over and painted with scenes over top, front and one side. Other sides were started but not finished. On the top in the painting of the girl the date of 1948 has been painted in. On the left side someone has signed their initials. Please see photos for description. Dovetailed all over, in good condition has a split that has been repaired on the back of the lid. This is a very nice Lane Cedar chest from the 1930s possibly 40s. It is all original and is art deco period. It has a rounded top with waterfall desighn. And has matching book end design. The exterior wood is tiger maple i believe, though i have seen others listed as blonde mahogony in classic heringbone design.so not 100% sure. The manufacterers label says 70% cedar. Has original finish with original lock with Lane logos, easures 46" wide- 19" front to back and is 23" tall. See pictures for more info and condition. Some ware and scuffs consistant with an older piece. be sure to see picture of top with deep 4" scratch. A good polishing would go along way to bringing back this chest. Caswell Runyan was a Cedar Chest maker from Huntington. Indiana that later became Lane. This chest is from around the early 1940's. Has a rare unique feature in that the drawers swing out allowing access to the lower part. Good condition has minor cosmetic flaws to the outside of it. Also, I have no key, but all you do is twist the lock part and raise the lid. The inside is like new condition and smells strong of cedar. The original tags are still inside of it. On one tag it says that this chest contains more than the 3/4" of Red Tennessee Cedar than recommended by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. I have up for sale a very nice vintage original circa 1920s- 40s Cedar Chest. The chest is in very clean original condition! It measures approx 45-1/4" long. 20" deep, approx 19-1/2" tall which includes the 1" castor height. The chest is in Excellent Condition- nice clean original finish- strong& sturdy- has a flat top which would be strong enough to sit on- that is unless you are over 300 lbs then I would not advise it. Some normal light age wear as one would expect. The only damage to note is a fairly inconspicuous chip/ slivered off piece- located on the front lower right. Shown up close in pics 10& 12. This is not something that is very noticeable at all, the sliver was done many years back and it has been stained over and the only way you will notice it, is if you look upclose with scrutiny. There is some ... moreslight wear to the metal bands, but its very light- nothing serious. The hinge works perfectly and the little metal elbow for holding the top up, when opened,works just fine. Or are a collector of high-end American antique furniture, then please read on. This fabulous cedar chest was made by the Standard Red Cedar Chest Company, Altavista, Virginia. This company was known later as the Lane Furniture Company, but they didn't use their family name until later, once the company was successfully established(you can read about the Lane Company history here. This is a great example of one of their early chests measuring 45" long x 19" tall x 22.5" deep. This comes with its original cedar tray and cedar chips(which is shown in the box inside the chest. But I will bag) This was probably made between the start of the company in ... more1912 and into WWI since the company adopted its family name after the War. This is constructed entirely of cedar. Tin banding with copper studs embellish this. Just looking at this you'd think it was a perfect specimen. But closer inspection shows that there are some paint scuffs where it came into something painted white, it was used in a workroom so there are saw marks on the very edge of one corner, and you'll find a few nicks and scratches. but heck, it is an antique and none of it is that bad. All four castors are in great condition and you can push this around the room with one finger. It currently resides in my shop so it could be sold during anytime of this auction. Due to the size of this item I am only limiting it to within the US. There is a chip of wood missing off the left front leg and some missing trim from the right front corner. The finish has some scuffs. A few light scratches, and some age wear to the varnish. This is an art deco carved unusual cedar lined blanket chest that dates from the 1940s era. It’s a really nice piece of furniture. With ... morea drawer in the base, is beading molded all the way across, acanthus carving, big bulbous posts that go into a shoe foot trestle base. Then, it has a triple-section top that is felt lined for all your fragile items, and it has a Middlebury clock in the top. Very rarely do you see these chests with a clock in the backsplash! This one has an electric clock made by the Middlebury Clock Company, and the cabinet itself is made by the Roos Furniture Company, well-known for their chests. We have re-sprayed the top and disabled the lock so it will not lock. The overall size is 45 inches wide, 19 inches deep, and 40 inches high. The clock is not guaranteed to work, and may need to be readjusted and cleaned. It’s a very unique chest.
