1832 Plan or Map of Westchester County, New York
1832 Plan or Map of Westchester County. New York WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Plan of the Country from Frogs Point to Croton River Shewing the Positions of the American& British Armies from the 12th of Oct. 1776 until the Engagement on the White Plains on the 28th. Description: This is a rare map of Westchester County. New York, the Bronx, and upper Manhattan during the American Revolutionary War issued for John Marshall’s 1832 edition of the Life of Washington. The map covers the strategically important region north of New York City as far as the Croton River and Tellers Point(Croton Point) Various rivers, roads, and topographical elements are noted. Color coding indicates the positions of the British(Red) and Continental(Blue) forces as each attempted to maintain control of the region. Marshall prepared ... morethis map to illustrate the Battle of White Plains. In 1776 the British General William Howe, fleeing Boston, regrouped and landed his forces on Long Island and Staten Island. After defeating George Washington at the Battle of Long Island, Howe sized control of New York City and most of Manhattan. After a series of skirmishes leading up to the Battle of Harlem Heights, Washington and his forces retreated northward to Westchester County. Howe, keen to size the advantage, landed troops in Westchester, a flanking maneuver intending to encircle Washington’s forces. Washington, alerted to the tactic entrenched himself in White Plains, but was unable to hold against Howe’s superior numbers. Howe proceeded to drive Washington across New Jersey into Pennsylvania where he famously crossed the Delaware on December 26th to surprise a Brigade of Hessian mercenaries in the Battle of Trenton– a strategic Continental victory and major turning point in the war. This map appeared in atlas volume attached to the 1832 edition of John Marshall’s seminal work, The Life of Washington. Marshall composed the five volume biography between 1805 and 1807 and based the work on original papers and re
1801 Mangin-Goerck Plan or Map of New York City
1801 Mangin-Goerck Plan or Map of New York City WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Plan of the City of New York. Drawn from Actual Survey by Casimir Th. Goerck and Joseph Fr. Mangin, City Surveyor. Description: An interesting and unusual map. This is an 1856 reissue of the 1801 Mangin-Goerck Plan. Those who know New York’s shoreline will pause at the perfect blocks and ridged angles of this plan no more accurate today than it was in 1801 when Joseph Mangin first presented it. Mangin, a talented French architect, and Casimir Goerck, an established New York Surveyor, were commissioned by the Common Council of New York to prepare a new regulatory map of the city. Though Goerck passed away before the plan could be completed, Mangin finished the plan on a grand scale, re-envisioning New York City in his own image. Mangin ... moreeven added streets such as Mangin Street and Goerck Street which would have been submerged under the East River had they actually existed(as a side note another of Mangin’s Street’s, South Street, did eventually appear) The Mangin-Goerck plan went far beyond the Common Council’s dreams of an administrative plan and, due to its inclusion of'intended improvements' new streets, and idealized block structure, enjoyed a short lifespan. This example of the unobtainable Mangin-Georck plan of New York City was issued in 1856 for Valentine's Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York. Size: Printed area measures 16.5 inches high by 20.5 inches wide. Condition: Very good. Some wear and repairs on original fold lines. Especially at fold intersections. A plan of the Operations of the King's Army in New York 1776
The chart shows New York Island and the Hudson River as far north as Pecks Kill and concentrates on the progress of the King's army between 12th October and 28th November 1776. It denotes American troop movements in blue and British in red. The colors and tones you see on this print are exactly as on the original document. It is printed on the highest quality. Acid free, archival paper; Hanhnemuhle German Etching Paper(310gsm) Heritage Charts specializes in researching and reproducing historic manuscript surveys, maps and charts held in British Archives. Drawn by Claude Joseph Sauthier and engraved by William Faden. This chart takes the viewer through all of the stages of the British advance and the American withdrawal through upper New York Island with the engagement at White Plains on the 28th October being especially detailed. As the ... morewar progressed the American Commander-in-Chief. George Washington, increasingly realized the importance of avoiding meeting the superior British forces in an open field engagement. At White Plains he chose positions which would, hopefully, allow him to fight from behind defensive positions but he failed to secure the nearby high ground of Chatterton's Hill, which dominated the American lines. When the British arrived they made to secure the hill, hoping to dominate the American positions as the Americans had done to them in Boston when taking Dorchester Heights. The engagement at White Plains was therefore more about the struggle to dominate Chatterton’s Hill than it was anything else. It also serves as an example of Washington's inability as a military strategist. As it turned-out the Americans were dogged in their resistance and lost only half of the 250 men lost by the British. The victory proved expensive for the British and ultimately achieved little. Especially when General Howe, once again, hesitated in his pursuit of Washington after a battle. Five days later, on the 3rd November, he turned his British army south again toward the Hudson River and King's Bri

1776 William Faden: A Plan of New York Island.. & ORIGINAL MAP PUBLISHED IN 1865
William Faden: A Plan of New York Island. With part of Long Island, Staten Island East New Jersey. With a Particular Description of the Engagement of the Woody Heights of Long Island. Between Flatbush and Brooklyn. On the 27th of August 1776. Publisher: Henry McCloskey's Manual of 1865. Lith of A Brown& Co. Liberty St. New York. Map measures: 11.5 x 14,2inches. Fine example of Faden's map showing the British Invasion of New York City in August and September of 1776. Faden's battle plan of New York is one of the most important broadside plans of the American Revolution and one of the most important graphic depictions of the history of the City of New York. The map shows the British& American theater of war in Manhattan. The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and the north part of Staten Island, along with parts of Westchester County ... moreand New Jersey. Following the British evacuation of Boston and retreat to Halifax in March 1776. The Americans held a tenuous control of the East Coast from Maine to Georgia. In truth, British mastery of the sea gave them the option to invade more or less when and where they wished. This they did. Sending a vast force to take New York City and gain control of the lower Hudson. This was one element of a grand pincer strategy, the other end of which was an attack by General Carleton from Montreal along Lake Champlain-Lake George axis. The broad intent was to cut off New England and leave it essentially undefended. The British would then have been able to bring overwhelming force to bear on the northern colonies, after which it was anticipated the rest of the colonies would submit. Beginning in late June. 1776 the British began assembling in New York Bay a vast armada of hundreds of transports, more than 70 warships, and tens of thousands of troops. Uncertain of British plans and faced with the possibility of landings at any number of locations—on Long Island, on Manhattan itself, or possibly even upriver—Washington and the Continental Army could only dig in and wait. The strike

1807 Marshall Plan or Map of New York City: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens
1807 Marshall Plan or Map of New York City: Manhattan. Brooklyn, Queens WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Ile de New York. Partie de Long-Island ou de I'le Longue, et Positions des Armees Americaine et Britannique, Apres le Combat livre sure Hauteurs le 27 Aout 1776. Description: This is a rare map of New York City during the American Revolutionary issued for the 1807 French edition of John Marshall's The Life of Washington. The map covers the strategically important Manhattan Island and vicinity. Including Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Various rivers, roads, and topographical elements are noted. The map also indicates the positions of the British and Continental forces as each attempted to maintain control of the region. Marshall prepared this map to illustrate the events leading to the ... moreBritish takeover of New York City and vicinity. Specifically, it details the Battle of Harlem Heights and the Battle of Long Island. In 1776 the British General William Howe, fleeing Boston, regrouped and landed his forces on Long Island and Staten Island. After defeating George Washington at the Battle of Long Island, Howe sized control of New York City and most of Manhattan. A series of subsequent skirmishes culminated in the Battle of Harlem Heights, in what is now Morningside Heights, New York City. Washington controlled the highlands and galvanized his troops to a strong defense, holding the heights against superior British numbers and firepower. Nonetheless, the position proved untenable and Washington and his forces retreated northward to Westchester County. Howe, keen to size the advantage, landed troops in Westchester, a flanking maneuver intending to encircle Washington's forces. Washington, alerted to the tactic entrenched himself in White Plains, but was unable to hold against Howe. Howe proceeded to drive Washington across New Jersey into Pennsylvania where he famously crossed the Delaware on December 26th to surprise a Brigade of Hessian mercenaries in the Bat

Plan of Yonkers. Town of Yonkers, Westchester Co. N.Y. Saw Mill River. Oak Wood Park, North Broadway, Hudson River Railroad) No imprint. But almost certainly ca. 1870's era. Lithographed with original hand color. Fine and very uncommon monumental old city plan of Yonkers. New York. Stunningly detailed, virtually every plot outlined and named if owned, with hundreds of buildings shown. Printed on a bond paper which is rather sturdy. A picture is worth a thousand words. The photos are a major part of the item description. Please examine them closely. As what you see is what we will send you. note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws. Map remains visually attractive and relatively well preserved. There is a long 12" tear across the map at approx. the middle of the top left quadrant which someone ... moreclosed with linen tape. This tear is ever so slightly visible. But the closing has been done carefully and the overall visuyal effct is that it is very easy to loverlook or possibly even miss on casual observation. Some light age wear and overall light scattered surface spotting/ soiling which is visible within the pictures(not offensive at all) Certainly not perfect, but entirely acceptable for display or ownership given the scarcity of the item. Paper and image remains overall clean& sound. Old maps& prints often display small minor repairs on the back. Could have uneven blank margins, might have extraneous fold-lines or other small minor age flaws which do not detract from the visual appeal or value. Condition is carefully considered in arriving at our price. Great antique map entirely worthy of hanging for display. A depiction captured in a manner entirely unique to this era.
