Vintage Pictorial Historical Map of Boston MA Old City Alva Scott c 1930-1950
Here is a very nice. Well preserved specimen of a Pictorial-Historical map of Old Boston. Massachusetts. The map is set at a 3/4 perspective on the street grid of Boston. It features famous buildings and sites drawn in vertical perspective- this is a very nice feature of the map. The map is a marriage of cartography and art, featuring a historical theme. It is repleat with illustrations and geographical information. As well as many historical accounts and vignettes. The colors are beautiful and bright as originally. Green is the dominant color. But red, yellow, black, and gray are also present. The street grid is a golden rod color. The map was designed and drawn by Ava Scott Garfield and published by Scott-Maps. Concord, Mass. I could not find a date. But by the quality and type of the illustrations and method, I would estimate the map dates ... morefrom about 1940. But could have been drawn any time between 1930 and 1950. Around the border there are alternating illustrations of fish and a pot of Boston Baked Beans. The map is in great condition. But has some wear near 3 of the corners. Including some crinkling and a 1/4" tear on the lower right- See Photos 4, 5, and 6. These problem areas are outside the map and colorful border and if framed would be inconsequential. There are dozens of illustrations and story lines on this map. Far too many to mention, but a few interesting items are these: Cambridge; Charleston; Northeastern University; Boston University; Boston Commons; The Fenns; Alexander Graham Bell; and, the Sears& Robuck Building. The persective buildings are surprisingly detailed, and of course, not to scale, but drawn for effect. The map is printed on heavy stock paper, about 30 lb weight I would say. The paper has not really yellowed or darkened with age. The size of the map is 27 1/2" x 21 1/2" A very nice map of the pictorial genre. No international bidders- except Canada- please. I ship USPS or Fedex. Depending on which is the more economical and efficient given the item being shipped.

Here is an interesting Pictorial Map taken from the August 7. 1937 edition of The Illustrated London News magazine. As part of an article promoting the 1937 America's Cup Challenge Yachting Race to be held July 31-October 31. 1937. This pictorial map is more correctly a pictorial chart. Showing the racing area between Block Island to Newport Harbor. Rhode Island to Martha's Vineyard. It is quite colorful sporting beautiful yachting designs. Insignias, flags, and the typical 10 meter racing sail boats- yachts- used in the America's Cup. The chart. Says the caption, was taken from an original chart designed by on Major Ernest Clegg. The chart shows the various courses of the racing events within concentric circles of 10 and 15 miles. The lower border has beautiful illustrations of earlier America's Cup yacht winners from 1887-1903. ... moreThe map/chart is has rich coloration and its printed on heavy very glossy paper that was the magazine. On the reverse are two very colorful. But irrelevant, full color, ful page advertisements. The chart, because of its size, 15 1/2" x 13 1/8" covered two pages of the magazine. And thus, there is a vertical fold down the map. In the fold are tine staple holes where 3 staples pinned the map to the magazine. The fold shows moderate wear. But nothing serious. This is essentially the only issue with the piece. Please see the description section where I go into more detail as to the condition of this piece. The map is printed on ONE PAGE. There are not literally 2 pages to this map! The overall size of the sheet is 21 1/2" x 14 5/8" The Illustrated London News printed many beautiful maps. Here is a very pretty and early Pictorial Map of Boston titled" The Colour of An Old City" This Historical-Pictorial large size poster map(almost 38" x 29" is dated either 1926 or 1928. The last number is smeared, but I believe it reads 1926. This is a fairly scarce map. Conceived and illustrated by Edwin Olsen and Blake Clark. Who are credited in the map's Key as having" Designed. Drawn(sic) And Colored" this map. UNFORTUNATELY, the map is not in good condition. I am listing it because it is scarce and still a very attractive map; perhaps it can be mounted on archival paper or light weight canvas and then perhaps framed. The worst thing about it is that it is missing paper at three corners. However. The colors are very vibrant with the 3 Primary Colors dominating the print. And I try to explain them in the Description Section. As far as its content. The map is repleat with illustrations. Caricatures. And epitaphs about the places and history of Old Boston. The map discusses the present day Boston(mid-1920's) with the historical Boston. Both explicitly and implicitly. The drawings of ships, buildings, coats of arms, and historical sites are not only pure Boston, they are very well executed and blend into the map in a very clever way. Unlike most pictorial maps that have random and scattered drawings on the map proper- if you will, the"geographical" or"cartographical" parts of the map, the illustrators have chosen to have depicted just about ALL of the building and houses in Old Downtown Boston. This map has many unique illustrations on it; for instance. The map's Scale. VINTAGE LONG ISLAND MAP Vintage pictorial map of Long Island. From Brooklyn and Queens to the Hamptons and Montauk. Landmarks such as Montauk Lighthouse, the beach at Southampton, and the Fire Island Light are shown. The Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound are decorated with various pictorial illustrations including a striped bass, swordfish, spouting whale, and the Sag Harbor Whaler ship. Other decorations include an Art Deco wind figure and compass rose. An intricate border is decorated at the top with underwater scenes; on the sides with famous sites such as Birthplace of John Howard Payne. East Hampton, and Jones Beach; and with historical events, such as the settlement of Brooklyn and building of Brooklyn Bridge. The key indicates radio stations. Here is an interesting map brochure put-out by SCONY. The Standard Oil Company of New York. Entitled, Coastwise Cruising Guide. Newport, RI to Sandy Hook, NJ" The brochure is a double-sided poster sized sheet of 9 Charts of Long Island Sound and the Atlantic off Long Island. And all coastline waterways in between the aforementioned port cities. The brochure is folded into 16 equal sized panels of 9 1/2" x 6 3/8" each. This set of charts dates from about the very early 1940's or late 1930's; I think definitely pre-WWII. I could not find a date on the brochure. But I estimate the date based on the type of tall skinny gravity driven gas pumps shown on the brochure(see Photo 6) This brochure is meant to be used as a poster fully opened. On one side is a large wall sized chart of the waters surrounding Long Island; this ... moreis the main side/chart. On the reverse side are 8 charts of various sizes and water courses. These charts are genuine and reliable in reading depth. Direction, and coastline geography. There are several 360 degree compasses set on Geographic North all over the charts. This is an example of a Pictorial Chart. Because the sheets are complementary decorated with illustrations of ships. Boueys, lighthouses, people enjoying the beaches, and many other maritime characatures. Additionally. The charts show nautical flags. Weather sinals, radio station logs, and narratives about the various harbors and shoreline areas of importance to boaters. New York Harbor is prominently depicted and described. These charts are meant to be used for sailing small craft in and around New York Harbor. The Hudson and East Rivers, all of Long Island Sound, the Atlantic for a few hours south of LI. And the Atlantic off the Hamptoms to Newport. RI. The brochure would have been intended for yahchting. Pleasure boating, day sailing, and probably for business cruising along the shoreline in these waters. Here is a nice early National Geographic Society Pictorial Map of the White Mountain Region in New Hampshire. The map is dated 1937 and would have been a supplement to the July. 1937 edition of National Geographic Magazine. This map is an example of a true pictorial map produced by the National Geographic Society and distributed via a magazine insert. Dating from the Golden Era of the pictorial map, the 1930's. By 1950, Nat Geo produced"pictorial maps" in name only; they contained illustrations, but the cartography superseded the art, in my opinion. The"pictorial-ness" of this map is confined to the inner border. But this was a type of pictorial map seen in the 1920's and 1930's. Actually, the geographic part of this map. The Whie Mountains. Is probably an illustration. Too, or taken from an illustration; the ... moretechnique is called" Shaded Relief" And in this day was done as art. The map was illustrated by Margaret B Austin. The map was printed by A. Hoen& Company. Baltimore. A road map with counties. Cities, rivers and other water courses, and boundaries is superimposed over the shaded relief representing the mountains. The map was, of course, folded, into six panels, being a loose magazine insert. The map is a compact 20" x 17" At the bottom is an insert location map showing the relative location of the White Mountains. This map is in excellent condition with only very minor wear. Please see the Description Section where I go into detail as to condition. Not scarce. And not hi-tech, like today's Nationial Geographic maps, but a sharp-looking, framable map for Nat Geo fans.
