Manouēl I Komnēnos. November 28, 1118– September 24. 1180) was a Byzantine Emperor of the 12th century who reigned over a crucial turning point in the history of Byzantium and the Mediterranean. Eager to restore his empire to its past glories as the superpower of the Mediterranean world. Manuel pursued an energetic and ambitious foreign policy. In the process he made alliances with the Pope and the resurgent west. Invaded Italy. Successfully handled the passage of the dangerous Second Crusade through his empire. And established a Byzantine protectorate over the Crusader kingdoms of Outremer. Facing Muslim advances in the Holy Land. He made common cause with the Kingdom of Jerusalem and participated in a combined invasion of Fatimid Egypt. Manuel reshaped the political maps of the Balkans and the east Mediterranean. Placing the kingdoms of Hungary and Outremer under Byzantine hegemony and campaigning aggressively against his neighbours both in the west and in the east. However. Towards the end of his reign Manuel's achievements in the east were compromised by a serious defeat at Myriokephalon. Which in large part resulted from his arrogance in attacking a well-defended Seljuk position. Called ho Megas( Greek: ὁ Μέγας. Translated as" the Great" by the Greeks. Manuel is known to have inspired intense loyalty in those who served him. He also appears as the hero of a history written by his secretary, John Kinnamos,

DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Exceptionally large silver antoninianus produced in the city of Rome itself sometime during the year 247 A.D. It is in exceptionally good condition, evidencing only very slight wear from circulation in ancient Rome, with all legends and themes very clear and distinct. It was well struck both front and back on an oversized planchet. Unlike most coins of the era, the strike caught the entirely of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. It is without a doubt a superior strike, considerably larger and heavier than the typical specimen of the era. The obverse of the coin depicts Roman Emperor Philip I, draped and with radiate crown; and the legend“IMP M IVL PHILLIPVS AVG” M IVL PHILIPPVS” refers to the Emperor’s name. Marcus Julius Philippis. IVL” is short for Julius, there was no“J” in Roman Latin. The“IMP” preface to his name is an abbreviation for“Imperator” Imperator was originally a title or acclamation awarded to victorious

CLASSIFICATION: Roman/Moesian Terra Cotta Oil Lamp of Very Basic and Simple Style. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Moesia(Present-Day Bulgaria) First Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 78 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 66 millimeters(2 2/3 inches) Height: 24 millimeters(1 inch) CONDITION: Excellent. Typical soot stains around wick hole indicative of ancient use. Some alkaline deposits. DETAIL: This is a very nicely preserved red-colored terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moesia. Present-day Bulgaria. This is a very basic, simple and common style– you could call it“generic” It is the“Volkswagon” of oil lamps, a very basic and simple style for simple and limited budgets– something you would find in the home of the ordinary man of the first century A.D. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nicely preserved specimen and in such pristine condition. Though there are some rather hard alkaline deposits inside the bowl of the oil lamp, it is in otherwise very good condition, sound, unbroken. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct. But it seems to be either a Roman numeral“I” or perhaps simply a line. However a single line seems rather unlikely, a trademark should mean something. SO it seems most likely that it would have been intended to signify the numeral 1. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces from Pannonia(Hungary) to Moesia(Bulgaria) And even in Rome itself. Oil was filled into the cente

Genuine Ancient Roman Iridescent Blown Glass Vial. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Roman Blown Glass Vial. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Syria) 1st Century ... moreA.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 80 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Bowl Diameter: 11 millimeters(1/2 inch) Neck Diameter: 8 millimeters(1/3 inch) Top Lip Diameter: 16 millimeters(2/3 inch) Weight: 5.99 grams. CONDITION: Very good. Complete but likely repaired(professionally, probably by a conservator) Fairly uncommon style. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. Heavy layer of iridescence and soil deposits caused by prolonged burial in soil) DETAIL: This is a very handsome first century A.D. Roman blown glass vial of reasonably nice dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ and 3 inches in size. This specimen is over 3 inches tall! It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted. Engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the medium-sized pieces such as this, and even smaller sized pieces are rarely recovered intact except

Description: It is an authentic engraved antique map approximately 165 years old with original handcolor outlining. It is from Houze's Atlas Universel Historique et Geographique(Paris: Dumenil. 1841) A copy of the Atlas title page with date is included for authenticity. The name of A. Houze appears in the title block, under whose directions the maps were designed and engraved. It is being sold as a single sheet, not mounted, matted nor framed, basically as seen in the pic, photographed against a dark background so you can see all the edges and actual condition. The map was actually printed in 1841, but depicts an earlier historical period, prepared by Houze, a member of the Societe de Geographie in Paris. There is a nice summary of the main historical events in the margin below the map with corresponding numbers to their locations on the map. Overall a very nice example printed on strong paper with original handcolor in great shape. Size: The map image measures approximately 8 by 11(20x28cm) inches on a 10 by 13" 26x33cm) page with a margin all around for matting. As seen in the main pic. Condition: It is in Very Good condition for its age with light tonal ageing. They have been numbered in India Ink in the corner. Other than some very light handling around the edges and a couple of small specks in the margin. It is very clean with a nice overall antique appearance and superb color that would frame up nicely.
