This image is coated with a silicone rubber molding material that makes two rubber mold halves(each rubber mold has a front and a back piece) A fiberglass outer shell is added to the back of each mold so it retains its shape and rigidity during subsequent uses. Woman entertainer with monkey, climbing stick and hand drum' signed Measurements: Height: 18 inches, Width: 9 inches, Depth: 6 inches The signature is on the base on the right side next to the back left foot. There is felt under the entire piece- it was folded back in the photo so you can see the bottom edge of the sculpture. The felt has some age but we are unsure if it is original to the statue or was an addition so the statue would not scratch the surface of whatever it sits on. The statue sits very firm with no wobble at all. It is not leaning. The position figure looks like she is in motion with her right leg bent as she walks and is turning back to look at the monkey. There is no leaning of the statue. ... moreThe statue is complete and shows no sign of any repair or breakage. Even the bronze rope that she holds the monkey with and the roping around what appears to be a drum on her right side in in tact with no breakage. The circle with a handle she holds in her hand can be removed. It fits through her hand and the bottom of the handle sits in an indentation on the base. Japan has known a long and splendid tradition of casting bronze. The decorated bronze guards on Samurai swords, or tsuba, are in fact small works of art in bronze. When the Samurai class were suppressed after the restoration of the Meiji Emperor(1867) a whole group of craftsmen were faced with economic ruin. However, thanks to a great reception of Japanese arts and crafts as seen at the Paris World exhibition in the 1860s, the artisans of Japan could turn their skill to other forms and thus Japanese bronze casting entered a new phase. Their produce would hence forth be sold to Europe and later to the United States. This is an example of the fine Tokyo School of bronze casting which were done in the naturalistic style then popular. Vintage African Bronze Sculpture Animal Folk Art Deer Cow ?? Unsigned
A very nice African Vintage Bronze to add to your collection! Bronze is approx. 15" long and approx. 9 1/2" tall. Weight is 6 1/2 lbs. The provenance I have on this unsigned art is that my neighbor bought it in the 60's. I can see there may have been a repair on the right front leg or that was a production flaw either way Lou says he never had it repaired. There is no wobble or does it seem that front leg flaw is unstable. As you can see there is some pitting to the bronze and some clean up may be required or left as is. I don't know what is the best process to shine up and clean but I am not sure all would want that, so I am leaving as is. Thank you for looking!

This sculpture is a beautiful representation of the art of Dimitri Chiparus. Born in Romania and worked most of his life in Paris. Chparus was one of leading artists in the first half of the 20th Century in Art Deco style. Dimitri H. Chiparus(1888- 1950) Born in Romania. Dimitri Chiparus immigrated to Paris, where he studied under Anonin Mercier and Jean Boucher. He began to exhibit small sculptures, his very first showing at the Salon of the Societe des Artistes Francais in 1914 leading to an Honouable Mention. Louis Comfort Tiffany was also awarded an Honourable Mention that same year. Chiparus was an extremely prolific artist, producing a wide variety of mainly small-scale figures. These were executed generally either all in bronze or in bronze and ivory. Some designs were executed in both media, and a few occasionally in more than one ... moresize. A few figures were executed in spelter and ivorene though the white metal was cold painted in the same way as bronze, while the ivorene, which was cast, was painted in bright colors. Most of his figures were edited by the firm of Edmond Etling, though he executed a number of models for the firm of Arthur Goldscheider. Both of course had their own bronze foundries. He exhibited a bronze edited by Goldscheider at the 1928 Salon, La Danseuse Ta-Keo. His last recorded exhibit at the Salon was in 1939. Though his feminine figures and dancers made his reputation, he also produced a vast array of sculptures of children. Some are quite charming, often sentimental, but others were designed to appeal to slushy tastes that have become fashionable. He designed a number of colorful ceramic figures for Etling. This is a wonderful Vietnamese bronze head of a women in excellent conditon. It measures 14" high including the base. It weighs 8+ lbs. There is a signature and a foundry mark on the back of the neck. There is a note with it that was stuffed inside it. The note is not included in this auction because we have three other bronze heads but I could include a copy if you want. We know that these are at least 70 years old. We found them packed away at an estate sale in Lake George. NY. They are all dusty but we don't dare clean them. We will leave that up to the buyer. We will ship this in two parts for safety.
