HUGE Chronicles of Ancient Rome Lavish Illustrations Art Architecture Maps Huns
Ancient Rome: Chronicles of the Roman World by Timothy R. Roberts. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 176 pages. Publisher: Metro Books; 2000) ISBN: 1567997244. A huge. 12½ x 11 inch sumptuously illustrated history] Rediscover the glory that was ancient Rome, the civilization that gave the western world much of its government, architecture, art and literature, in this lavishly illustrated history by Timothy R. Roberts, who recounts with verve and insight the chronicles of one of the most influential eras of all time. Situated on the banks of the Tiber, surrounded by the famed seven hills, ancient Rome was the center of the western world for centuries. Within a quarter century of its fou8nding by Romulus in 753 B.C. Rome’s citizens established a republic, which gave its people unprecedented rights and privileges. Over the next several ... morecenturies Rome also developed a taste for conquest; its dominion gradually extended throughout much of the European continent and into northern Africa. Ironically Rome’s might overpowered its own government, and republic yielded to empire. The glory days of the Roman Empire would last well into the fourth century A.D. and long after its inevitable decline and fall, Rome’s legacy lives on. This lively history brings each aspect of ancient Rome to life for the modern reader. From the great leaders, and from the artists whose works are still studied today to the daily lives of ordinary citizens. Here too are explanations of the formidable achievements in law, engineering, architecture, government, literature, and philosophy that ensure that the legacy of ancient Rome will live on forever. Ancient Rome” features stunning photographs of architectural and artistic treasures, plus colorful maps that depict the varying parameters of the Roman Empire though its many phases of conquest. In addition a timeline highlighting the most significant events in the history of the Empire provides an overview of the period. A richly illustrated and absorbing account, Ancient Rome” presents a

A Golden Legacy: Ancient Jewelry from the Burton Y. Berry Collection at the Indiana University Art Museum by Wolf Rudolph. With an Essay by Barbara Deppert. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 332 pages. Publisher: Indiana University Art Museum; 1995) ISBN: 0253209137. Published at $39.99] Jewelry is a necessary luxury. With costly materials and labor-intensive manufacture which establish it as extraordinary and sumptuous. Its nearly universal function as a commemoration of important passages, most notably engagements and weddings, deems it a necessity, even among the most austere of human beings. The urge to enhance our basic appearance with jewelry has evidently been part of human nature since our earliest beginnings. Thus the jewelry that survives, even from the most ancient of cultures, offers fascinating insights into our common humanity. For this ... moreand many other reasons, the vast holdings of ancient jewelry bequeathed by Burton Berry to the Indiana University Art Museum are most significant. Ambassador Berry was an indefatigable collector who assembled a remarkable collection tracing ancient jewelry from its beginnings in the Chalcolithic era to the early Christian and Byzantine ages. The collection tells us much about changing ideas. Technologies, and tastes which shaped and reshaped the ways in which gold and silver, gems and stones, were used to make adornments. In addition, the sampling presented within this text, assembled out of his collection, provides some fascinating glimpses beyond the traditional inner circle of Greene and Rome. The jewelry presented takes the reader to the outposts of the ancient world. To Anatolia and the Balkans, to Iraq and the Levant, which though far-flung, were nevertheless active and vital parts of the ancient cosmos. In a way, these distant places are even more fascinating than the heartland, as they combine native traditions and vigor with colonial and imperial styles and aesthetics. Because Burton Berry collected on the“edges” of the ancient Classical world, and because he was

Wonders of Man: The Colosseum by Peter Quennell and the Editors of the Newsweek Book Division. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 172 pages. Publisher: Newsweek; 1971) Mock epic sea battles. Grimly realistic wild animal hunts, breathtaking fireworks displays, and at least one midnight séance have been held in the Colosseum since its inauguration in 80 A.D. More than 1,500 years have passed since the last blood, human or animal was shed on the arena’s sands. However during that time the massive amphitheater built by the Flavian emperors has continued to play a major role in Roman history. The Colosseum” vividly recreates that history, depicting the gory gladiatorial games, the martyrdom of early Christians, the successive sacks of Rome by marauding barbarian armies, the desecration and partial dismantling of the arena itself, and ... morefinally its preservation as a world-famous tourist attraction. Here we have the panoramic sweep of the decline and fall of Rome. As viewed from the Eternal City’s most impressive ruin. Some one hundred illustrations, half in full color, provide a stunning visual complement to the narrative. Modern photographs, especially commissioned for this volume, as well as paintings and sketches by famous artists have been juxtaposed with views of classical sculpture and ancient frescoes, coins, and mosaics. A special section. The Colosseum in Literature” includes excerpts from works by such noted authors as Gibbon, Byron, Goethe, Shaw, Dickens, and Longfellow, all of whom were inspired by the vast amphitheatre. A chronology of Roman history, an illustrated guide to the Eternal City’s other celebrated architectural monuments, and a selected bibliography conclude the volume. Author Peter Quennell was an accomplished biographer and social historian. He was Editor of the distinguished British periodical“History Today” And a frequent contributor to“New Statesman” Among his many works that won both critical and popular acclaim both in England and the United States are“The Profane Virtues”

The Age of Rococo by Terisio Pignatti. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 157 pages. Publisher: Cameo/ Paul Hamlyn; 1969) The first half of the eighteenth century is perhaps the most exquisitely stylish period in European art. This was the time of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour. Of Watteau’s“fetes galantes” and Tiepolo’s allegories; of Sevres and Meissen porcelain, or Oeben’s and Riesener’s furniture. The Rococo was an aristocratic style, and one after another of the courts of Europe followed the lead of Versailles until Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony, Austria, Italy, and Spain had all taken it up. Delicate. Swirling, feminine and frivolous, it was to be felt in all the arts, from the splendid architecture of the Zwinger in Dresden or the Wurzburg Residenz, to a pair of Nymphenburg porcelain lovers. The elegant vitality of the Rococo style ... moreis marvelously brought out in the illustrations while Pignatti’s absorbing text describes the arts throughout Europe’s most exuberant period. CONDITION: Lightly read hardcover w/dustjacket. Cameo/Paul Hamlyn(1969) 157 pages. Light edgewear and rubbing to dustjacket. This period of history is extremely complex. Far-reaching political and social revolutions were taking place. And philosophers, scientists, and artists brought their ideas to maturity in France, Italy, Germany, the Low Countries, England, and Spain. The eighteenth century is also

PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: The Etruscan civilization is the name given today to the culture and way of life of people of ancient Italy whom ancient Romans called Etrusci or Tusci. The ancient Greeks' word for them was Tyrrhenoi. Or Tyrrsenoi. The Etruscans themselves used the term Rasenna, which was syncopated to Rasna or Ra?na. As distinguished by its own language, the civilization endured from an unknown prehistoric time prior to the foundation of Rome until its complete assimilation to Italic Rome in the Roman Republic. Numerous artifacts of Etruscan culture survived the Roman conquest. At its maximum extent during the foundation period of Rome and the Roman kingdom. It flourished in three confederacies: of Etruria, of the Po valley and Latium and of Campania. Rome was sited in Etruscan territory. There is considerable evidence that early Rome was dominated by Etruscans until the Romans sacked Veii in 396 BC. Culture that is identifiably and certa

The Romans: An Introduction to Their History and Civilization by Karl Christ. Translated from the German by Christopher Holme. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 294 pages. Publisher: University of California; 1985) Roman civilization is one of the bases of the modern world. The extraordinary achievements of Rome- political. Military, cultural- and its dramatic, thousand-year history, during which it grew to dominate the whole world of classical antiquity before being overwhelmed in its turn, have been continuously studied and variously interpreted ever since. Rome has been commended for its administration, praised for its system of justice, admired for its arts and technology, extolled for its"virtues, such as love, freedom, independence, discipline, courage, and austerity. It has also been condemned for its aggression, its exploitation of slaves, ... moreits excesses, and the decadence that led to its decline. But such was Rome's impact, and so remarkable was the empire it built, that its influence has never ceased to be felt. Whether as a model of political power. Of moral behavior, or of social control, Rome, with its splendors and triumphs, its failings and disasters, is an inexhaustible quarry for the lessons that its history offers and the legacies that it has bequeathed. Karl Christ conveys the essence of this vital Roman tradition with a coherence and compact precision that few scholars, if any, have been able to achieve. Following the main chronological developments of Roman history, he combines the necessary minimum of political and military narrative with lucid social and economic analysis, separate chapters on Roman ways of life and law, and wide-ranging coverage of literature, art, science, technology, and religion. With maps and photographs as well as a specially prepared bibliography for further reading, The Romans" is the most up-to-date, authoritative and comprehensive single-volume introduction to the history and civilization of Ancient Rome. The Civilization of Europe in the Renaissance by John Hale. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 648 pages. Publisher: Atheneum; 1994) ISBN: 0689122004. In this extraordinarily rich and engaging book. John Hale has painted, on a grand canvas, what he calls"an investigative impression" of one of the highest points of European civilization: the flourishing, between 1450 and 1620, of the period we have come to call the Renaissance. It was an age that, wrote Marsilio Ficino in 1492, has like a golden age restored to light the liberal arts which were almost extinct: grammar, poetry, painting, sculpture, architecture, music. The book contains memorable descriptions of all of these. But Hale is not concerned simply with the arts: his interest is much wider. This] was the first age in which the words'Europe' and'European' ... moreacquired a widely understood significance. It saw the emergence of a new and pervasive attitude to what were considered the most valued aspects of civilized life. It witnessed the most concentrated wave of intellectual and cultural energy that had yet passed over the continent. It was also a period in which there were such dramatic changes of fortune for better of worse- religious, political, economic and, through overseas discoveries, global- that more people than ever before saw their time as unique, referring to'this new age, the present age, our age' to one observer it was a'blessed age, to another, the worst age in history" Hale paints his picture with an astonishing multiplicity of themes, people, and ideas. How did Europeans see themselves and others? What united them and separated them, both geographically and within their communities? What languages did they speak and write, and how widely? How did they fix themselves in time and space? What did they call civilized? What did they buy and sell? How did they dress and eat? What did they think about and how did they communicate their thoughts? One of the strengths of this book, which moves far beyond c

Myths of the World: Classical Deities and Heroes by Morgan J. Roberts. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 112 pages. Publisher: Friedman Group; 1994) Ancient Greece. Considered by many to be the birthplace of western civilization, have rise to a mythology that has inspired artists and writers of the western world for centuries. Artists such as da Vinci and Titian and storytellers from Homer to Joyce have treated mythological stories and characters in their works. This mythology did not, however, remain solely Greek for long. When the Romans conquered the Greek regions and began the creation of their empire, they usurped the Greek myths and carried them north and west across Europe to the British Isles. Myths of the World: Classical deities and Heroes” presents the gods, goddesses, and heroes of Greco-Roman mythology in a fun-to-read ... moremodern storybook for myth lovers of all ages. The book begins with an account of the creation of the universe and the genesis of the earliest divine and semi-divine creatures including Uranus(heaven) and Gaea(earth) and their children: the monstrous hundred-handed Ones. The hideous Cyclopes, and the Titans, whose leader, Kronos, would later castrate his father and replace him as king of the heavens. Next comes the story of the reign of Kronos, the birth of his six children, the first of the Olympians(those gods who would later comprise the Greek pantheon) and Kronos’ overthrow by his son Zeus, who would go on to oversee the five ages of man. The middle chapters discuss each of the Olympians in turn. Describing his or her origin, sphere of influence, and major attributes, and presenting a story or two that is representative of his or her place in Greek mythology. Read about Zeus’s infidelities and his wife Hera’s acts of revenge, Hade’s abduction OF Demeter’S daughter Persephone, the love affair between Aphrodite and Ares, the pride of Apollo and his sister Artemis, the rape of Athena by Hephaestus, the cunning trickery of Hermes, the special immortality of Dionysus, and

Estate antique Bronze Sculpture Statue Moses Michelangelo's art on Marble Italy
A magnificent statue of moses that came from a Rabbi's estate. Marked as local pickup. Ask for a shipping quote due to size, weight and location. Will be shipped and packaged by a professional freight company. The original sculpture originated in Rome Italy by Michelangelo. It was originally carved from marble and remains today(see the last photograph) Since than. Many bronze statues were made to depict the original remaining in Rome today. This statue came from a respected Rabbi's estate in Orange County, CA. It was purchased by the family in the early 1900's and remained in the family since. There are many versions of this but this particular one is quite old and rare. It is evident in the color of the bronze which is quite dark. Almost black. When I purchased it I also purchased the marble column it was proudly displayed on ... morein the formal room. The large marble column is not included in this sale. Unless you are local. The statue itself sits on a thick square marble base besides the 4 foot marble column. The statue is extremely detailed and measures 19" x 7 1/2" x 9" The marble base under it is 6" x 10" x 8 1/2" So the entire statue together with the base is 25" tall x 10" x 8 1/2" It is extremely heavy and will be packaged and shipped accordingly. When Michelangelo created the sculpture he did it based on the translation by Jerome from the Hebrew writings. The Horns story: The statue has what are commonly accepted to be two horns on its head. The depiction of a horned Moses stems from the description of Moses' face as"cornuta" horned" in the Latin Vulgate translation of the passage from Exodus in which Moses returns to the people after receiving the commandments for the second time. The Douay-Rheims Bible translates the Vulgate as. And when Moses came down from the mount Sinai, he held the two tables of the testimony, and he knew not that his face was horned from the conversation of the Lord. This was Jerome's effort to faithfully
