Seems to be very old. A replica of 8th century BC Etruscan carvings. Could be anywhere from 100 to 200 years old. Made in the Mediterranean to keep oils, ... moreperfumes and ointments. Both ears are broken off, revealing the terracotta below. Depicts a man on a donkey or horse on a large hooved animal. Possibly a magical entity. These belong in museums. However, it'll look great on your bookshelf, too!! I'm not 100% certain on the origins or ages of this item. It looks to have had one leg repaired and had various hairline cracks. Very fragile 3I

Depth(Thickness) 3mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 1.14 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: The oldest sapphire jewelry unearthed by archaeologists has been of Etruscan origin. About sixth century B.C. The Greeks and Romans are known to have worn sapphires from Ceylon, as described by writers from those times. In the world of the ancient Mediterranean(including the Greeks, Romans, Persians, Hebrews, and the various Indo-European Celtic tribes) priests and sorcerers honored the sapphire above all other gems, believing that sapphire enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. The ancient Mediterranean cultures also regarding sapphire as an antidote to black magic and effects of evil spirits, providing protection against sorcery. It was believed to banish evil spirits and send negative spells back to the sender. Here's a gorgeous. Richly colored natural cornflower blue sapphire precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The result was an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of fire and sparkle. It is brightly colored a regal cornflower blue, much, much lighter than inky"midnight blue" African or Australian sapphires, more along the lines of the bright blue of sapphires from Ceylon and Burma. The gemstone is at a minimum eye clean, and at least to the unaided eye, is flawless. The color is very intense, very vibrant, a saturated rich bright blue. Such good quality blue sapphires are in high demand, and can be quite costly. Unfortunately most seemingly fla

DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Exceptionally large silver antoninianus produced in the city of Rome itself sometime during the year 247 A.D. It is in exceptionally good condition, evidencing only very slight wear from circulation in ancient Rome, with all legends and themes very clear and distinct. It was well struck both front and back on an oversized planchet. Unlike most coins of the era, the strike caught the entirely of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. It is without a doubt a superior strike, considerably larger and heavier than the typical specimen of the era. The obverse of the coin depicts Roman Emperor Philip I, draped and with radiate crown; and the legend“IMP M IVL PHILLIPVS AVG” M IVL PHILIPPVS” refers to the Emperor’s name. Marcus Julius Philippis. IVL” is short for Julius, there was no“J” in Roman Latin. The“IMP” preface to his name is an abbreviation for“Imperator” Imperator was originally a title or acclamation awarded to victorious

Or treated peripherally in general texts on the ancient Roman world, Roman religion is finally accorded its due in this unique reference work. While perhaps most familiar in the context of Greek-influenced gods(Jupiter is to Rome what Zeus was to Greece" Roman religious life in fact encompassed a tremendous variety of deities, rites, and belief systems. From the Celtic God Abandinus to the pagan historian Zosimus, Dictionary of Roman Religion" contains more than 1,400 entries. Among the myriad of topics covered are: deities and spirits; festivals; sacrifices; temples, altars, and cult objects; burial rites; writers on religion; and historical religious events. The Town of Hercules: A Buried Treasure-Trove by Joseph Jay Deiss. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 183 pages. Publisher: Houghton Mifflin; 1974) ... moreISBN: 0395185165. It was a sunny. Cloudless August morning and the people of Herculaneum were going about their usual round of activities. In various parts of the town workmen plied their trades. Cabinet makers hammered and sawed, bakers baked their loaves of bread, cloth-makers dyed and pressed their cloth. The streets were filled with people, and shopkeepers hawked their wares: snacks both hot and cold, glassware, vegetables, pots and jewelry. Inside most of the houses lunch was being prepared. Suddenly a violent, cracking sound filled the air. From a mountaintop a vast mushroom cloud billowed into the sky. Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost two thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. In this story, Author Joseph Deiss tells of that rediscovery, the years of painstaking archaeological work that went into digging out this fascinating city. From its well-preserved remains it is possible to virtually reconstruct the life that went on there. And Mr. Deiss has done so admirably with words and over ninety photographs, many of which have never before been published. CONDITION: Unblemished except moderate edge+corner shelf wear to dustjacket. Including a few tiny, neatly mended closed edge tears. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 159 pages. Publisher: Sterling Publishing Company. Inc. 1997) The Celtic world. As it existing in three separate countries with a common spirit and tradition; Ireland, Wales, and Brittany, is brilliantly revealed in these exciting epic chronicles with 120 evocative photographs of artifacts, manuscripts, and landscapes that bring the Celtic world to life as never before. Ireland, land of ancient warriors who value nothing higher than fame and courage as they battle magical forces pitted against them. The Welsh warriors saw themselves as defenders of the west, heroes who would one day hurl the foreign oppressors back into the sea. These dramatic chronicles date back to the Middle Ages, but they are truly much older than that. They tell of love and betrayal, of quests and challenges, of supernatural creatures and of murder.
