SIZE: Length: 6mm. Width: 5mm. Depth: 2mm. Measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.86 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Ruby was greatly valued in the Medieval Arab world. There are many references to ruby in ancient Arabic literature. Including a noteworthy treatise by the 11th century Arab scholar Al-Biruni. Throughout Medieval Central Asia, the Near East, and China ruby was used to ornament armor, scabbards, and harnesses of noblemen. Rubies were laid beneath the foundation of buildings to secure good fortune to the structure. In Elsewhere in Medieval Europe ruby was priced eight times higher than diamond. There ruby was worn as a talisman, as it was believed that the stone darkened when danger was near and then return to its original color when the danger was past. Ruby was also thought to be an antidote to poisoning as well, and to protect the wearer from lightening, plagues, poison, sorrow, and evil spirits. Here's a very nice quality 19th century antique hand faceted“emerald” cut ruby. The cut is also sometimes referred to as an“octagon” within the trade. Hand crafted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. And that he who offered rubies to the gods would be reincarnated as a powerful king or emperor. In ancient India rubies were also sorted into upper class, middle class, and lower class stones in relation to their color, flawlessness and beauty. Much like Indian society today, no inferior ruby was allowed contact with an upper class ruby because it was believed the low-caste ruby would contaminate the better one, thereby diminishing its magical powers. In Sanskrit, one of the ancient languages of India, ruby was called"ratnaraj" which means"King of Gems" To them, this fiery stone burned with an inextinguishable fire, capable of boiling the water in which it was placed. DETAIL: Jade was widely used by primitive peoples as tools and weapons in the Neolithic. Especially in Europe, Mexico, Asia, New Zealand, and North Africa(including ancient Egypt) The best-known finds are from the lake dwellings of Switzerland, western France, and China. The source for Europe’s Neolithic jade remains undiscovered, but it was probably from a deposit in the Alps. Nephrite is very hard and was prized for keeping a sharp edge. In the Americas the Aztecs, Mayas, Olmecs, Toltecs, and other Pre-Columbian peoples of Mexico and Central America carved jadeite for use as ornaments, amulets, and badges of rank. Nearly all of these Meso-American jades are of various shades of green, with emerald green the most highly prized color among the Aztecs. The jade carvings range from plaques, figurines, small masks, pendants, to of course, tools and weapons. The widespread use of jade died out in Meso-America after the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Here are two nice quality 19th century antique hand crafted/shaped/polished semi-precious jade gemstones. The gemstones were hand shaped and polished by a 19th century Russian artisan. Augustus credited Apollo with his victory over Marc Antony’s Eastern Roman and Cleopatra’s Egyptian naval forces, and erected a magnificent temple to Apollo at Actium overlooking the site of the famous naval battle, as well as an even grander temple on the Palatine in Rome. In the Middle Ages it was believed that a topaz mounted in gold and worn around the neck would dispel enchantments and ward off death. Topaz was also used to treat medical ailments. It was believed that the application of topaz could actually absorb the heat of a fever. It was also used to ease the inflammations, discomfort and pain associated with arthritis. On the flip side, medieval sorcerers believed that sapphire enabled them to hear and understand the most obscure oracles. Not only did sapphire help to get in touch with astral and psychic realms, but the stone also provided protection for those who took those journeys. Roman Bronze Gemstone Ring Size 5 1/2. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Roman Bronze Ring. Antique Handcrafted Nineteenth Century Two Carat Unakite Semi-Precious Gemstone. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Africa- Carthage(present-day Tunisia) Third or Fourth Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 5 1/2(U.S. Diameter: 18mm(outer dimensions excluding gemstone) 16 1/2mm(inner diameter) Bezel: 8mm(breadth) 8 1/2mm(height) 1 1/2mm(thickness) Excluding gemstone. Completely intact. Heavy wear consistent with sustained(ancient) usage, very light(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A handsome. Nicely constructed Roman bronze ring with a raised platform, six-sided bezel which at one time would have been engraved. However the ring was worn for such an extended period of time that though the ring is entirely intact and its integrity undiminished, nonetheless whatever engraved design it once bore was worn smooth. It is quite likely that the ring was worn most of a lifetime, as it would take most of a life time to wear an engraved bezel smooth. In fact the extent of the wear is significant enough that it suggests that the ring might have been worn during the lifetime of more than one owner. Perhaps it was a family heirloom handed down between generations. Though the ring was not originally produced to hold a gemstone. The large, flat bezel seemed to invite a gemstone. So we mounted a large, natural, antique, handcrafted Siberian Unakite semi-precious gemstone using jeweler’s epoxy. The gemstone is quite secure, but if you at time in the future wished to remove it, this could
