ORIGIN: Handcrafted in Russia. 18th Century. SIZE: Length: 6mm. Width: 4mm. Depth: 2mm. Measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.63 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In ancient Burma it was believed that a ruby embedded into the skin to become part of the body. Thus making the wearer invulnerable and invincible, attributes especially useful to a warrior. In Sanskrit, one of the primary languages of nearby ancient(East) India a ruby was called"ratnaraj" which means"King of Gems" To them, this fiery stone burned with an inextinguishable fire, capable of boiling the water in which it was placed. Ancient Indian legends said that God first created ruby and later created man to possess it, and that he who offered rubies to the gods would be reincarnated as a powerful king or emperor. In ancient India rubies were also sorted into upper class, middle class, and lower class stones in relation to their color, flawlessness and beauty. Much like Indian society today, no inferior ruby was allowed contact with an upper class ruby because it was believed the low-caste ruby would contaminate the better one, thereby diminishing its magical powers. Celebrating mankind's cultural and historical legacy here's a remarkable and beautiful antique ruby precious gemstone. The gemstone was hand shaped and polished by an 18th century Russian artisan. Part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The ruby gemstone is relatively transparent, but as you can see, not entirely without blemish. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Rubies were amongst the earliest gemstones traded by mankind. Since the 5th millennium B.C. From the most ancient times all the way through the medieval world, ruby was worn by the classical Mediterranean civilizations(Greeks, Romans, Persians, and the Indo-European“Celtic” peoples) as an amulet for protection from lightening, plagues, poison, sorrow, and evil spirits. The ancient populations of the Mediterranean also believed that the color of a ruby would change mirroring changes in the health of its owner, and that the color would drain from a ruby at the moment its owner died. The Bible makes numerous mentions of ruby, first as one of the twelve precious stones created by God when he created mankind. Ruby is then described as“the lord of gems” when one was given to Aaron on the command of God. In the classical world, rubies from Afghanistan, Ceylon, and Burma were traded in the ancient port cities of the Eastern Mediterranean(often by Phoenicians) and from there traveled throughout Europe. Celebrating mankind's cultural and historical legacy here's a remarkable and beautiful antique ruby precious gemstone. The gemstone was hand shaped and polished by an 18th century Russian artisan. For sale is an amazing waste/ slop bowl made in China in the early 18th around 1735 possibly by the Imperial kilns because the quality is that good but ... morethen that begs the question why they would make an imitation of a European(babaric) piece! I have never seen a Chinese piece of this quality copying the Meissen pieces of the time and even marking it with the swords! Not sure what the purpose was or if it was meant as a replacement piece or to show off their true skills! The bowl is hand painted with a superb puce scene on the inside surrounded by a gold and red trim with Chinoiserie figures in red on top. Nice gold. Red and black trim to the inside edge. The best part however are the two scenes in polychrome on the outside of the bowl. One harbor/ merchant scene of superb quality which comes as close to the real deal as anything I have ever seen out of China and another scene of a shepherd with his dog, two sheep and a bull in a landscape surrounding. Two nice floral arrangements in between the cartouches that are quite nice as well but this is where it shows that it is not a Meissen original: Nice red and gold trim to the foot ring. The bowl is in superb condition with some minor gold wear mostly to the very top edge, a repair to the foot and a hairline to the top edge as shown. This hairline however seems to actually be under the glaze as you cannot feel it at all and the piece still rings true when tapped. Signed underneath with the over glaze greyish blue crossed swords which are definitely original to the piece. Quite interesting really! Maybe the first recorded copyright infringement of the Chinese? The piece is 2.875 inches tall and 5.875 inches in diameter. If you like my goodies have a look at my other auctions for a lot more top maker pieces like KPM. Onyx was used in ancient Egypt as early as the Second Dynasty(about 2800 B.C. to make bowls and other items. Onyx also was amongst the artifacts recovered of Minoan Crete(about 1800 B.C. notably from the archaeological discoveries at Knossos. Onyx became particularly famous in the hands of both the Greeks and Romans, who as described by the first century Roman historian and naturalist“Pliny the Elder” crafted beautiful intaglio seals out of onyx. Throughout Medieval Central Asia, the Near East, and China ruby was used to ornament armor, scabbards, and harnesses of noblemen. Rubies were laid beneath the foundation of buildings to secure good fortune to the structure. In Elsewhere in Medieval Europe ruby was priced eight times higher than diamond.
