RARE LOVELY 1880 SOFT MUSLIN COTTON SHAWL FROM METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART NEW YORK CITY This is a very early block printed and hand-painted 1880 soft cotton muslin shawl from India. It was de-accessioned from the Metropolitan Museum. It was beautifully cared for there. The flower motifs repeat throughout the border design. The flowers often seen in early 19th century paisley shawls are on this printed shawl. With corner sprigs of flowers and a central medallion of flowers. It measures 44 inches square w ith glorious saturated colors. The shawl is very light and soft to the touch. Made from light but substantial muslin. India produced lovely light muslin much earlier than anyone else. Not all shawls are equal! This shawl has a remarkably wonderful array of jewel like colors. Printed and woven very beautifully. If you have seen the current ... moretextile exhibition at the Met, you will realize how rare and lovely these textiles are. The ground is a soft gold, perhaps made from the barberry tree. The exquisite harmony of the design and fine color of this shawl makes it unusually beautiful quality. The saffron gold ground is made brighter by the lovely contrasting pink and green on brown leaf pattern and floral patterns. The colors are pink. Red. Green. Yellow. Purple. I can just see it enveloping a dress of the 19th century when dresses were so light and you needed a shawl to stay warm. It is very clean and has no smells and is very soft to the touch. There are dye marks scattered a bit from the printing process and perhaps a few minor stains. It is washable and appears to be dye-fast. The color is unfaded. There are no holes. Bites, mends. Amazing condition for this shawl. The shawl is in stable, strong condition. The selvedge is intact on two sides. The other two sides are not hemmed and have a kind of fringe resulting from the warp threads. I believe it was made this way, unhemmed. I have expertise in textiles. This silver on brass box is called a Knotjes Box or Marriage Box. The six sides are decorated with figures depicting trust. Hope, and prudence as well as love and tenderness. Renowned expert on Greek and Roman antiquities at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, received a letter from John Marshall, the Museum's veteran purchasing agent in Italy, describing a newly discovered life-size Etruscan warrior figure in terra-cotta which had been discovered in an Italian field. The"old warrior" he had a white beard and was emaciated, somewhat like, as one observer commented later, a Giacommetti sculpture) was ... moresoon followed by a massive four-foot tall terra cotta warrior's head, and there was even talk of a greater treasure waiting to be found. It was. Of course, all fakery, carried out on a grand, almost"mythic" scale, a scale meant to make experts put aside all their nagging doubts and see the"Etruscans" as what they were not(namely, ancient) The first two pieces had been created by Riccardo Riccardi and Alfredo Fioravanti, two young men of skill and a certain vision. Riccardo's father and brothers had also specialized in historic pottery, but Riccardo was the true genius of the family, and with his friend Alfredo he set out to produce"masterpieces" that would wow the world's museums. The white-bearded warrior and massive head were the first two, followed immediately after World War One by the capping stroke- a Colossal Warrior in terra cotta, standing over eight feet tall. Riccardo was killed in a fall from his horse before this project was completed and his place was taken by two less-skilled cousins. As with the earlier pieces. My spouse and I use many of The Great Courses and I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in the magnificent collection of art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art that was founded in 1870. Metropolitan Museum of Art- Parian Ware -Ears of Corn- High Relief -Pitcher-1993
I have up for auction a real nice. Never used, pitcher from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was made in 1993 as a reproduction from the mid 1800's of the British porcelain table- ware called Parian. It is a porcelain that has an unglazed surface. This pitcher has an unglazed exterior but it is glazed on the inside. I will include the information sheet supplied from the Metropolitan Museum of Art about this pitcher and as well as the history of parian ware in the US. Please note the markings of TBM and MMA. This is The Brooklyn Museum for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Please look at all the pictures as they are the main part of the description. Silverplate Spoon Metropolitan Museum of Art Reproduction
This reproduction of a 7" Spoon with a fig shaped bowl and straight stem ending in an ornament is stamped MMA(Metropolitan Museum of Art) but was probably made by Oneida. This type of spoon was popular in England and the Continent in the 17th century. According to the insert included with this item by the Museum, the original, which was lent to the Museum by Mrs. Timothy S. Griggs, was probably made later based on the presence of a mark(AC) used by a silversmith in the area of Albany New York in the 18th century. The Museum copy is cast in brass and silverplated.
