ANCIENT ROMAN & GREEK & other GODS in STATUARY & MYTHOLOGY -1880 STUDY
Manual of Mythology: Greek and Roman. Norse, and Old German, Hindoo and Egyptian Mythology” By Alexander S. Murray. Published in New York by Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1880. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A re-issue of the 2nd revised London edition. Alexander Stuart Murray[1841-1904] was a Scottish archaeologist who started work at the British Museum in 1867 as an assistant in the department of Greek and Roman antiquities under Sir Charles Newton. Whom he succeeded in 1886. In 1873 Dr Murray published a Manual of Mythology, and in the following year contributed to the Contemporary Review two articles- one on the Homeric question- which led to a friendship with Mr Gladstone, the other on Greek painters. In 1880-1883 he brought out his History of Greek Sculpture, which at once became a standard work. In 1886 he was selected ... moreby the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland to deliver the next years Rhind lectures on archaeology, out of which grew his Handbook of Greek Archaeology(1892) In 1894-1896 Dr Murray directed some excavations in Cyprus. Among Dr Murray's other official publications are three folio volumes on Terra-cotta Sarcophagi, White Athenian Vases and Designs from Greek Vases. In 1898 he wrote for the Portfolio a monograph on Greek bronzes, founded on lectures delivered at the Royal Academy in that year, and he contributed many articles on archaeology to standard publications. In recognition of his services to archaeology he was made LL.D. of Glasgow University in 1887 and elected a corresponding member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences in 1900. Wealth of the Ancient World Hunt Brothers Fab Pix Etruscan Roman Greek Hellenic
Wealth of the Ancient World. The Nelson Bunker Hunt and William Herbert Hunt Collections. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 329 pages. Publisher: Kimbell Art Museum in association with Summa Publications; 1984) This book offers an unparalleled opportunity to examine the art. Attitudes and aspirations of classical antiquity- an age far removed from that of our own, but one that still impresses itself strongly upon ours, socially and culturally. The exhibition spans more than a thousand years, extending from the archaic period in Greece and Etruria through the rich style of Sicily and South Italy to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. This epoch witnessed the shift in power from Athens to Rome and the final triumph of the East with the establishment of the new capital in Constantinople. As the exhibition will demonstrate, the ancients converted even their ... moremost prosaic form of wealth- their coinage- into objects of great refinement and artistry. Of the 112 coins selected from the collection of Nelson Bunker Hunt- considered now one of the finest in private hands- many are notably for their rarity, condition or historical importance, but almost all exhibit qualities that distinguish them as works of art. It is well-known that Greek vases are among the greatest artistic legacy of antiquity. Their decoration derives from everyday life as well as from the rich tradition of Greek drama and literature. The fifteen examples that comprise the collection of Nelson Bunker Hunt. All of which will be exhibited, include both black and red-figured pieces of Corinthian, Attic and South Italian workshops. Bronze enjoyed a great importance in antiquity as the primary medium for"pure" sculpture, though today we can also appreciate the imaginative decoration of utilitarian objects in bronze. Both aspects of bronze artistry are reflected in the thirty-eight pieces of the William Herbert Hunt Collection. Among them are acknowledged masterworks of portraiture and small statuary. At the first public showing of the majority of ancient works

The Year One. Art of the Ancient World. East and West” Edited by Elizabeth J. Milleker. Published by the Yale University Press in 2000. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Artworks of astonishing variety were being created in far-flung regions of the world in the Year One. In Europe. Celtic peoples excelled in intricate metalwork, and in Egypt a unique hybrid of Greco-Roman and age-old Egyptian styles predominated. East of the Mediterranean, Palmyra, Petra, the kingdoms of southern Arabia, and the mighty Parthian Empire produced a wide range of sculpture, ceramics, and precious metal objects, while in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India, a traveler would have discovered the eclectic arts of the Kushan Empire, where early Buddhist art incorporated occasional influences from Greece and Rome. Discussed here and seen in ... more149 color photographs are works from all these societies and also from China, Korea, Japan, and Mesoamerica. ANCIENT GOLD JEWELRY GREEK & ETRUSCAN & ROMAN -DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART COLLECTION
Ancient Gold Jewelry at the Dallas Museum of Art” By Barbara Depper-Lippitz. Published by the Dallas Museum of Art in 1996. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Prized for its beauty. Its workability, and its resistance to corrosion or decay, gold in the ancient world was, as Pindar put it, Zeus's child. Nothing erodes or consumes it. It conquers the mind of man and is the most powerful of possessions. Indeed, this lack of erosion means the 105 art objects shown in color photoraphs in this catalog are little changed from when they were created some two millennia ago. The Dallas Museum of Art acquired the Moretti collection of Mediterranean gold jewelry in the 1990s-one of the last significant collections in private hands. Among the superbly crafted gold and jeweled ornaments here are 4th-century BC Greek ear pendants with ... moredelicate figures of Eros dangling, Etruscan filigreed bracelets from the 7th century BC, and a pair of abstracted twist bracelets from 1st-century AD Rome that look contemporary" DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 8"x10" 150 pages, color illustrations. ANCIENT BRONZE STATUES & ARTIFACTS LOEB COLLECTION Roman Greek Etruscan Egyptian
Die Bronzen der Sammlung Loeb” By Johannes Sieveking. Published in Munich in 1913. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An elegantly produced catalog of ancient Roman. Hellenistic, Etruscan and Egyptian bronze mirrors, figures, busts, and other artifacts owned by noted collector and philanthropist James Loeb. Loeb[1867-1933] retired early from the family business and spent the rest of his life traveling. Collecting, and doing good things with his money. He founded the Loeb Classical Library at Harvard, became a trustee at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, and helped found what would become the Julliard School in New York. The bronzes illustrated in this catalog, along with this ancient pottery, were eventually given to the Staatliche Antikensammlungen in Munich. Loeb explained his philanthropy by writing- ... moreIn an age when the Humanities are being neglected more perhaps than at any time since the Middle Ages, and when men's minds are turning more than ever before to the practical and the material, it does not suffice to make pleas, however eloquent and convincing, for the safeguarding and further enjoyment of our greatest heritage from the past. Means must be found to place these treasures within the reach of all who care for the finer things of life. SCHIMMEL COLLECTION: ANCIENT GREEK ROMAN ETRUSCAN EGYPTIAN ANTIQUES & ART
An Interesting Auction Catalog- Antiquities from the Norbert Schimmel Collection” The catalog to an auction held in New York by Sotheby's on December 16. 1992. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Norbert Schimmel collected ancient art from the 1940s to the 1990s. Assembling one of the truly fine and select private collections of his era. The objects included Near Eastern, Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek and Roman antiquities. His February 22. 1990 New York Times obituary reported- Norbert Schimmel, a collector of antiquities who gave an important group of ancient Egyptian reliefs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1985, died of pneumonia on Friday at his home in Longboat Key, Fla. He was 85 years old, and had lived for many years in Great Neck, L.I. Mr. Schimmel, who also backed major archeological excavations in the Middle ... moreEast, was known in the antiquities field as a discerning collector possessed of a keen eye, who did not rely on curators for confirmation of his tastes. In some 35 years, he developed what is today considered one of the world's outstanding private collections of Mediterranean antiquities. He exhibited his holdings at museums throughout the world, and donated objects to many of them. In 1975, 300 works from his collection were shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, ranging in time over more than 6,000 years and covering Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Etruscan and Near Eastern cultures. As a collector he was an inspiration to the antiquities field. In the sense that he quietly and devotedly promoted the appreciation of ancient art through sage collecting and through the generosity he manifested to several collections throughout the country, said Maxwell L. Anderson, the director of the Emory University Museum of Art and Archeology in Atlanta. And he did it without fanfare or desire for recognition. He was a trustee of the museum for many years. Serving on the board's acquisition committee until he resigned last year. Always modest about his collecting, Mr. Schimmel once

ANCIENT ROMAN GREEK ETRUSCAN POTTERY - BIRCH 1858 -2 VOLUMES with COLORED PLATES
History of Ancient Pottery” By Samuel Birch. Published in London by John Murray in 1858. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first edition of what was the first comprehensive history of ancient pottery. Including Greek, Roman, Assyrian, Etruscan, and Egyptian work. Birch's work stood as the cornerstone of the literature on ancient ceramics for decades, and although now very dated, is still an interesting and informative study. In 1910. More than half a century after its first appearance, Solon wrote of it- It would be nothing short of presumption on our part to praise a work the immense value of which is acknowledged by all students of archaeology. All we can say is that, according to the opinion of the masters of the science, Birch's general history of ancient pottery has remained, up to this day, an unassailable ... moreauthority on most of the subjects that are treated by it. It condenses the substance of many volumes of difficult access and often still more difficult interpretation; all materials have been selected with judicious discrimination and classified with clearness and accuracy. DESCRIPTION: 2 volumes. 6"x9" 415& 437 pages, 12 color plates and hundreds of text illustrations. Bound in period dark green 3/4 leather with marbled boards and endpapers. Spines with raised bands, separated into five compartments with gilt titles and ancient vase decorations. CONDITION NOTES: Covers with moderate scuffing and a little wear. Some light internal soil. Still a handsome set, with tight bindings. OVERSEAS BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: Our International shipping charges are based on the weight. Women & Female Form in Ancient Greek Art, Sculpture, Painting, Pottery
Greek Beauty” By Berenice Geoffroy-Schneiter. Published in New York by Assouline in 2003. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Goddess. Nymph, muse, or merely mortal, women never ceased to inspire Greek sculptors and painters. Far from representing an ideal beauty of young athletes with exultant bodies, these sensuous feminine models recount to us the ambiguous notions the Greeks had toward women. From a Pompeian fresco of Sappho to a terracotta bust of Aphrodite, and from a pure gold wreath to a bronze mirror fashioned in the 16th century BC, the art of the ancient Greeks seems as elegant and profound as ever. Many of the color plates seen here reveal the fascination that the female form held for Greek sculptors. Showing both the fascination and repulsion, eroticism and damnation, this small work in pictures offers a synthesis ... moreof art and beauty through what is perhaps the most inspired period of all times: ancient Greece. Knopf: 2003) The Venus de Milo is both a great work of art and a popular icon. And from the moment of her discovery in 1820 by a French naval ensign, she has been an object of aesthetic and archeological controversy. Using memoirs, letters, and official accounts, Gregory Curtis introduces readers to Venus as she was unearthed by a farmer, digging for marble building blocks on the Aegean island of Melos at the moment a young officer and amateur archeologist looking for classical relics happened by. Curtis tells how the island's elders fought with their Turkish overlords over who owned Venus, and how the French pressed their claim, outwitting other suitors to bring her to the Louvre, where she became an immediate celebrity. Curtis's depiction of Europe in the early 19th century, caught in the grip of a classical art mania, reveals just how far the Louvre was prepared to go to prove it had the greatest classical
