European Textiles in the Robert Lehman Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art
European Textiles in the Robert Lehman Collection. Metropolitan Museum of Art This volume. The tenth to be published in a projected series of sixteen, catalogues the European textiles and objects made of fabric in the Robert Lehman Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Robert Lehman and his father. Philip Lehman, purchased textiles with the same well-trained eyes they used to acquire paintings, drawings, and decorative arts in general. Among the most distinguished and widely admired objects in the Collection are two series of embroidered roundels from fifteenth-century Flanders and four large tapestries, including the Last Supper after Bernaert van Orley that is arguably the finest Renaissance tapestry in an American collection. The Collection also includes a great number of ecclesiastical vestments and panels of magnificent silks ... moreand velvets in a vast array of techniques and styles that span more than six centuries. Many of these textiles were used to decorate the Lehman town house in Manhattan, as hangings, covers, or upholstery. They represent sixty-five years of assembling, owning, and living with historical fabrics on a day-to-day basis, and for scholars and laymen alike they document an American style of living and interior decoration that has largely disappeared. Blue Room Johnson Bros Transfer Square Plates Metropolitan Museum Aesthetic 4
This listing is for a set of four( 4) dark blue and white Johnson Brothers plates that were made for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York about 30 years ago. Each plate is approximately 7 1/4" in diameter. The transfer pattern is very typical of the Aesthetic Movement period. And it should work well with other blue and white china and with pieces that are solid colors like white or pink. It is also easy to imagine them with Japanese ironware and laquerware, or with woodenware of various kinds. I would describe these plates as being in very good vintage condition. There are some rough spots on the outer rims and 4 or 5 fleabites on the undersides of the plates. But they are not visible from the top. I am happy to work with buyers in many countries.

Ottoman Empire Polychrome Tile - Metropolitan Museum of Art Deaccession
Ancient Ottoman Tile This is perhaps one of our finest pieces; a large and substantial polychrome tile originating from the Ottoman Empire(1.453 to 1,600 C.E. As can be seen from the photographs, it is in remarkable condition. There are similar pieces on view at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. As well as many other museums. Due to strict import limitations, pieces like these rarely come on the market these days. This piece is from my personal collection and was purchased as a deaccession from the Metropolitan Museum of Art by my father back in the day when they sold such things. A real rare treasure. It measures 11 inches in width, 5 1/2 inches in height, and 1 1/4 inch deep. It is a substantial and heavy piece reflected in the cost of shipping. Glass in the Robert Lehman Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art
Glass in the Robert Lehman Collection. Metropolitan Museum of Art Among the exquisite pieces of glass in Robert Lehman's collection are many that exhibit the consummate skill of Venetian glassmakers and explain why Venetian glass was so coveted in Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The factories in northern Europe that produced glass a la faon de Venise are represented as well. Robert Lehman also acquired perhaps the richest American collection of eighteenth-century lampworked glass figurines. Which are usually attributed to Nevers, France. ANCIENT TERRA COTTA ETRUSCAN WARRIORS -FAKES IN THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART
Etruscan Terracotta Warriors in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. With a Report on the Structure and Technique by Charles F. Binns” By Gisela Richter. M.A. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Papers No.6. 1937. Edition limited to 500 copies. DISCUSSION: A gigantic(to say the least) scholarly“oopsie” This is a detailed report on several massive. Ancient Etruscan terra cotta warriors in the Met's collection, in fact they were the stars of the Met's collection of ancient art at the time this glowing report was written. The problem would later turn out to be that they weren't, well, ancient. Let's turn the clock back a bit- In late 1915 Gisela Richter. Renowned expert on Greek and Roman antiquities at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, received a letter from John Marshall, the Museum’s veteran purchasing ... moreagent in Italy, describing a newly discovered life-size Etruscan warrior figure in terra-cotta which had been discovered in an Italian field. The“old warrior” he had a white beard and was emaciated, somewhat like, as one observer commented later, a Giacommetti sculpture) was soon followed by a massive four-foot tall terra cotta warrior’s head, and there was even talk of a greater treasure waiting to be found. It was. Of course, all fakery, carried out on a grand, almost“mythic” scale, a scale meant to make experts put aside all their nagging doubts and see the“Etruscans” as what they were not(namely, ancient) The first two pieces had been created by Riccardo Riccardi and Alfredo Fioravanti, two young men of skill and a certain vision. Riccardo’s father and brothers had also specialized in historic pottery, but Riccardo was the true genius of the family, and with his friend Alfredo he set out to produce“masterpieces” that would wow the world’s museums. The white-bearded warrior and massive head were the first two, followed immediately after World War One by the capping stroke- a Colossal Warrior in terra cotta, standing over eight feet tall. Riccardo was killed in a fall from his

MMA JONQUIL Daffodil Parian Ware Pitcher Vase Metropolitan Museum Art Nouveau. Click picture to enlarge click picture to enlarge Description This Parian Ware porcelain pitcher is a MMA late 20th century reproduction. Parian ware is an unglazed high-quality porcelain developed by Copeland& Garrett in England in the early 1840s. Its look was developed to resemble white marble. Parian ware was also made during the 19th century in Bennington Vermont by United States Pottery Company. The high relief design of jonquils and arching leaves is inspired by an original parian pitcher in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Stands about 8 3/4" tall. No box. CONDITION: Preowned item. 20 years old at most. It looks great but please expect that there are some minor signs of use if you are looking really closely, like ... moresmall stain marks or a faint smudge- all very typically of unglazed wares. It is a little dirty deep in the interior from use(probably from use as a vase) Shelf wear/stain on underside of base as shown in photo. I see one little mark on the top of the handle as shown in photo. With a 25x loupe, it looks like a small circle- so perfectly round that my best guess is that is as made, perhaps a kiln mark. Next to the circle, I can see two tiny marks- maybe little scratches or as made. ANTIQUE EUROPEAN FURNITURE in the METROPOLITAN MUSEUM -German, French, Russian +
European Furniture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Highlights of the Collection” By Danielle O.Kisluk-Grosheide. Wolfram Koeppe, and William Rieder. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006. DISCUSSION: This volume is the first to survey the Metropolitan Museum's world- renowned collection of European furniture. One hundred and three superb examples from the Museum's vast holdings are featured. They originated in workshops in England. France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Russia, and Spain, and date from the Renaissance to the late nineteenth century. A number of these pieces belonged to such important historical figures as Pope Urban VIII, Louis XIV, Madame de Pompadour, and Napoleon. The selection includes chairs, tables, beds, cabinets, commodes, settees and sofas, bookcases and standing shelves, ... moredesks, fire screens, atheniennes, coffers, chests, mirrors and frames, showcases, and lighting equipment. There is also one purely decorative piece, a superb vase made for a Russian noble family who, according to one awestruck viewer, owned all the malachite mines in the world. The makers of some of the objects are unknown, but most of the pieces can be identified by label, documentation, or style as the work of an outstanding European designer-craftsman, such as Andre-Charles Boulle, Thomas Chippendale, David Roentgen, or Karl Friedrich Schinkel. This volume also includes a bibliography, glossary, and index. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.5”x12.5” 292 pages, 134 color and 115 black& white illustrations, dust jacket. CONDITION NOTES: Minor wear. Porcelain Lattice Work Basket Metropolitan Museum Art MMA Mid 19C Russian Repro
This is a reproduction MMA"Russian Lattice Work Basket" Which was sold in their gift shop and catalog in the 1980s. This lovely basket is in excellent condition. It has never been used. It would make a wonderful Wedding gift. It is very pretty. Comes with the original descriptive card. The basket is approximately 9-1/2" x 7" and is approximately 2-3/4" tall. The following is from the printed description that came with the basket. Russian Mid-19th-Century State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg. This openwork basket with its dainty flowered trelis design is adapted from a mid-19th-century piece in the collection of the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. The design, however, is evocative of the first dinner-serice made at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in St. Petersburg in about 1758 for the personal use of Empress ... moreElisabeth. It was produced under the supervision of Dimitry Vinogradov, the inventor of Russian porcelain and a well-known 18th-century scientist. The service became very popular and continued to be produced by the factory under the auspices of Nicholas I. In the 19th-century version, blue Forget-Me-Nots were substituted for the original purple flowers. The Museum's reproduction is fragile and should be handled with care. Wash by hand; we do not recommend washing it in a dishwasher. Produced in cooperation with the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg. Please let me know if you have any questions and I will answer ASAP! Thanks for looking! Will be carefully packed for shipping.
Ancient Nishapur (Islamic) Bowl - Metropolitan Museum of Art Deaccession!
Ancient Nishapur Bowl There are very similar pieces on view at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as many other museums. Due to strict import limitations. Pieces like these rarely come on the market these days. This one is from my personal collection and was purchased as a deaccession from the Metropolitan Museum of Art by my father back in the day(1960s) when they sold such things. Please note. The original receipt from 50 years ago has been lost. The history of Nishapur begins around the Sasanian Dynasty. NIshapur was one of the greatest cities in medieval ages. Located in the eastern province of Khorasan. Founded during the Sasanian dynasty(and given the title of New Shapur) the city became the capital of the Tahirid Dynasty in the 9th century and reached the height of its prosperity under the Samanids in the 10th century. ... moreWhen it served as the seat of the governor and commander in chief of the province. Nishapur retained its importance under the Selguqs, after its occupation by the first sultan of this Turkic dynasty in 1037. It was sacked by the Oghuz in 1153 and damaged in a series of earthquakes in the 12th and 13th centuries, yet it remained an active urban centre until its utter destruction by the Mongols in 1221. MARRIAGE BOX DUTCH 1914 CADWALADER METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART
This is a Marriage Box. Dutch, Friesland, 3rd Quarter of the 17th century. In Dutch Friesland during the 17th and 18th centuries it was the custom for a man to present the woman of his choice with a marriage sovereign-usually offered in a small silver box. The acceptance of such a gift meant that the woman intended to marry the giver, and this was regarded as legally binding. These boxes, identified as knotjes, or bride's boxes, were sometimes filled with golden ducats. Like this six-sided example, such boxes were frequenyly decorated with allegorical figures depicting trust, hope, and prudence as well as love and tenderness. The original of this box, although incompletely marked, can be attributed to Friesland, where most of these boxes were made. The master mold for the reproduction was made from the original box in the Museum's ... morecollection. It is cast and silver plated. Oxidation may cause the piece to darken. Polish lightly with a soft cloth to restore the finish(no abrasive cleaners. Retailed for $200 in the Met. Museum of Art shop. This piece is no longer available through the Museum. Comes with box from smoke-free home. Free shipping! See my 100% feedback.
