And six months later became ... morepresident. Under his rule, which lasted for seventeen years, the college entered on an unprecedented degree of prosperity, and his influence on education was felt far outside the walls of Oscott. ANTIQUE ANCIENT ROMAN & BYZANTINE & MEDIEVAL GLASS - Ernesto Wolf Collection
Roman. Byzantine and Early Medieval Glass, 10 BCE to 700 CE. Ernesto Wolf Collection" By E. Marianne Stern. Published in Ostfildern-Ruit by Hatje Cantz in 2001. DISCUSSION: Far more rare than the ceramic. Stone, and metal artifacts of ancient peoples that are the staple of archaeological museums, glassware also has a long history in Western civilization. The revolutionary Roman invention of the glassblowing iron in the 1st century BC made it possible to produce large numbers of light, thin-walled glass vessels, and resulted in an outburst of artistic creativity throughout the empire. More than 225 exquisite objects, some over 2,000 years old, are presented here in color photographs and precise descriptions-some as delicate and beautifully formed as fine glassware today. NEW Medieval Marriage Family Roman Byzantine Sex Plague Retirement Noble Peasant
Marriage and the Family in the Middle Ages by Frances and Joseph Gies. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 372 pages. Publisher: Harper& Row Publishers; 1998) Historians have only recently awakened to the importance of the family. The basic social unit throughout human history. Long left to the anthropologists and sociologists, the family and marriage, its indispensable accessory, have stirred intense controversy since being taken up by early modern historians. Phillipe Aries, Edward Shorter, Peter Laslett, and others postulated a number of challenging hypotheses. ANCIENT EGYPTIAN - ROMAN FAYUM PORTRAITS 1st-4th Century Funerary Art in Egypt
Fayum Portraits” By Berenice Geoffrey-Schneiter. Published in New York by Assouline Publishing in 2004. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Miraculously preserved by the dry sands of the Egyptian desert. Some thousand 1st-4th century painted portraits—called"Fayum" after the region they were found in—have fascinated artists and archaeologists for their strange presence. Many are idealized images with dramatic, dark-eyed gazes, yet others are startlingly realistic, capturing the character of individuals from millennia ago. In all, a portrait of a province, which became Roman, comes alive. This book tries to pierce the secret of these fragments of faces. Who were the authors of these portraits, whose modernity of execution does not cease to surprise us? What society was sufficiently rich and proud to exhibit itself ... morethus after death? NEW Human Story History Stone Age to Now Greek Roman Hebrew Holocaust WWII HCDJ
The Human History: Our History. From the Stone Age to Today by James C. Davis. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 466 pages. Publisher: Harper Collins Publishers; 2004) In"The Human Story" James C. Davis takes us on a journey to ancient times, telling how peoples of the world settled down and founded cities, conquered neighbors, and established religions, and continues over the course of history, when they fought two nearly global wars and journeyed into space. Davis's account is swift and clear, never dull or dry. He lightens it with pungent anecdotes and witty quotes. Although this compact volume may not be hard to pick up, it's definitely hard to put down. For example. On the death of Alexander the Great, who in a decade had never lost a single battle, and who had staked out an empire that spanned the entire Near ... moreEast and Egypt, Davis writes: When they heard how ill he was, the king's devoted troops insisted on seeing him. He couldn't speak, but as his soldiers, every one, filed by in silence, Alexander's eyes uttered his farewells. He died in June 323 B.C. at the ripe old age of thirty-two. In similar fashion Davis recounts Russia's triumph in the space race as it happened on an autumn night in 1957: A bugle sounded. Flames erupted, and with a roar like rolling thunder, Russia's rocket lifted off. It bore aloft the earth's first artificial satellite, a shiny sphere the size of a basketball. Its name was Sputnik, meaning'companion' or'fellow traveler' through space) The watchers shouted, Off. She's off. Our baby's off! Some danced; others kissed and waved their arms. Though we live in an age of many doubts. James C. Davis thinks we humans are advancing. As"The Human Story" ends, he concludes, The world's still cruel; that's understood. But once was worse. So far so good. CONDITION: Remainder mark on bottom. Otherwise New, never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFES

Wealth of the Ancient World Hunt Brothers Fab Pix Etruscan Roman Greek Hellenic
Wealth of the Ancient World. The Nelson Bunker Hunt and William Herbert Hunt Collections. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 329 pages. Publisher: Kimbell Art Museum in association with Summa Publications; 1984) This book offers an unparalleled opportunity to examine the art. Attitudes and aspirations of classical antiquity- an age far removed from that of our own, but one that still impresses itself strongly upon ours, socially and culturally. The exhibition spans more than a thousand years, extending from the archaic period in Greece and Etruria through the rich style of Sicily and South Italy to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. This epoch witnessed the shift in power from Athens to Rome and the final triumph of the East with the establishment of the new capital in Constantinople. As the exhibition will demonstrate, the ancients converted even their ... moremost prosaic form of wealth- their coinage- into objects of great refinement and artistry. Of the 112 coins selected from the collection of Nelson Bunker Hunt- considered now one of the finest in private hands- many are notably for their rarity, condition or historical importance, but almost all exhibit qualities that distinguish them as works of art. It is well-known that Greek vases are among the greatest artistic legacy of antiquity. Their decoration derives from everyday life as well as from the rich tradition of Greek drama and literature. The fifteen examples that comprise the collection of Nelson Bunker Hunt. All of which will be exhibited, include both black and red-figured pieces of Corinthian, Attic and South Italian workshops. Bronze enjoyed a great importance in antiquity as the primary medium for"pure" sculpture, though today we can also appreciate the imaginative decoration of utilitarian objects in bronze. Both aspects of bronze artistry are reflected in the thirty-eight pieces of the William Herbert Hunt Collection. Among them are acknowledged masterworks of portraiture and small statuary. At the first public showing of the majority of ancient works

The Year One. Art of the Ancient World. East and West” Edited by Elizabeth J. Milleker. In Europe. Celtic peoples excelled in intricate metalwork, and in Egypt a unique hybrid of Greco-Roman and age-old Egyptian styles predominated. East of the Mediterranean, Palmyra, Petra, the kingdoms of southern Arabia, and the mighty Parthian Empire produced a wide range of sculpture, ceramics, and precious metal objects, while in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India, a traveler would have discovered the eclectic arts of the Kushan Empire, where early Buddhist art incorporated occasional influences from Greece and Rome. Discussed here and seen in ... more149 color photographs are works from all these societies and also from China, Korea, Japan, and Mesoamerica. ANCIENT GOLD JEWELRY GREEK & ETRUSCAN & ROMAN -DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART COLLECTION
Ancient Gold Jewelry at the Dallas Museum of Art” By Barbara Depper-Lippitz. Published by the Dallas Museum of Art in 1996. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Prized for its beauty. Its workability, and its resistance to corrosion or decay, gold in the ancient world was, as Pindar put it, Zeus's child. Nothing erodes or consumes it. It conquers the mind of man and is the most powerful of possessions. Indeed, this lack of erosion means the 105 art objects shown in color photoraphs in this catalog are little changed from when they were created some two millennia ago. The Dallas Museum of Art acquired the Moretti collection of Mediterranean gold jewelry in the 1990s-one of the last significant collections in private hands. Among the superbly crafted gold and jeweled ornaments here are 4th-century BC Greek ear pendants with ... moredelicate figures of Eros dangling, Etruscan filigreed bracelets from the 7th century BC, and a pair of abstracted twist bracelets from 1st-century AD Rome that look contemporary" DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 8"x10" 150 pages, color illustrations. ANCIENT GREEK ROMAN & OTHER WOMEN IN SCULPTURE PAINTING CERAMIC ART ANTIQUE
Greek Beauty” By Berenice Geoffroy-Schneiter. Published in New York by Assouline in 2003. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Goddess. Nymph, muse, or merely mortal, women never ceased to inspire Greek sculptors and painters. Far from representing an ideal beauty of young athletes with exultant bodies, these sensuous feminine models recount to us the ambiguous notions the Greeks had toward women. From a Pompeian fresco of Sappho to a terracotta bust of Aphrodite, and from a pure gold wreath to a bronze mirror fashioned in the 16th century BC, the art of the ancient Greeks seems as elegant and profound as ever. Many of the color plates seen here reveal the fascination that the female form held for Greek sculptors. Showing both the fascination and repulsion, eroticism and damnation, this small work in pictures offers a synthesis ... moreof art and beauty through what is perhaps the most inspired period of all times: ancient Greece. Sotheby's 6/7/12 ANTIQUITIES Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Egyptian, Classical, Wester
This is a book for the Sotheby's auction catalog sale held in New York on June 7. 2012 for Antiquities, covering 79 lots in 75 pages. All lots illustrated in color. Excellent condition. Here is what Sotheby's had to say about its sale: This season’s Antiquities auction will include a variety of examples of Egyptian, Classical and Western Asiatic material. We are pleased to offer, from the Estate of Jan Mitchell, a rare and complete Greek marble grave stele from the mid to late 4th century B.C. showing a young boy with his dog, found in Athens in 1877. Three Greek pottery vases to be offered from this estate were once the property of William Randolph Hearst; one comes originally from George Waddington(1793-1869) Dean of Durham Cathedral, one from Alfred Bourguignon, the late 19th century Neapolitan collector and dealer, and one from ... morethe Ruesch Collection dispersed in Switzerland in 1936. The sale also includes a draped marble figure of a muse holding a lyre, which came to light in 1891 on the slopes of Mount Helikon. Among other fine examples of Roman marble sculpture is a long-lost almost life-size figure of Aphrodite, from the collection of the Regency collector and designer Thomas Hope, a newly rediscovered figure of Artemis of the Dresden Type, unearthed and published in the 1880s with a figure of Kybele, also in the sale, and a figure of Sophocles once at Marbury Hall and acquired by James Hugh Fitz-Barry from Thomas Jenkins in the 1770s. The highlight of the Egyptian section is a complete limestone block statue of a transport official named Karo, who worked at the court of King Rameses III; once in the private museum of a convent in Vienna, a gift made to the congregation in the 19th century, it was last sold in these room in 1998. Among the gems of the sale are a small Predynastic stone vessel of unusual and pleasing shape, and a slender Greek marble wing with remains of red pigment. Powered by The free listing tool. ANCIENT BRONZE STATUES & ARTIFACTS LOEB COLLECTION Roman Greek Etruscan Egyptian
Die Bronzen der Sammlung Loeb” By Johannes Sieveking. Published in Munich in 1913. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An elegantly produced catalog of ancient Roman. Hellenistic, Etruscan and Egyptian bronze mirrors, figures, busts, and other artifacts owned by noted collector and philanthropist James Loeb. Loeb[1867-1933] retired early from the family business and spent the rest of his life traveling. Collecting, and doing good things with his money. He founded the Loeb Classical Library at Harvard, became a trustee at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, and helped found what would become the Julliard School in New York. The bronzes illustrated in this catalog, along with this ancient pottery, were eventually given to the Staatliche Antikensammlungen in Munich. Loeb explained his philanthropy by writing- ... moreIn an age when the Humanities are being neglected more perhaps than at any time since the Middle Ages, and when men's minds are turning more than ever before to the practical and the material, it does not suffice to make pleas, however eloquent and convincing, for the safeguarding and further enjoyment of our greatest heritage from the past. Means must be found to place these treasures within the reach of all who care for the finer things of life. SCHIMMEL COLLECTION: ANCIENT GREEK ROMAN ETRUSCAN EGYPTIAN ANTIQUES & ART
An Interesting Auction Catalog- Antiquities from the Norbert Schimmel Collection” The catalog to an auction held in New York by Sotheby's on December 16. 1992. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Norbert Schimmel collected ancient art from the 1940s to the 1990s. Assembling one of the truly fine and select private collections of his era. The objects included Near Eastern, Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek and Roman antiquities. His February 22. 1990 New York Times obituary reported- Norbert Schimmel, a collector of antiquities who gave an important group of ancient Egyptian reliefs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1985, died of pneumonia on Friday at his home in Longboat Key, Fla. He was 85 years old, and had lived for many years in Great Neck, L.I. Mr. Schimmel, who also backed major archeological excavations in the Middle ... moreEast, was known in the antiquities field as a discerning collector possessed of a keen eye, who did not rely on curators for confirmation of his tastes. In some 35 years, he developed what is today considered one of the world's outstanding private collections of Mediterranean antiquities. He exhibited his holdings at museums throughout the world, and donated objects to many of them. In 1975, 300 works from his collection were shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, ranging in time over more than 6,000 years and covering Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Etruscan and Near Eastern cultures. As a collector he was an inspiration to the antiquities field. In the sense that he quietly and devotedly promoted the appreciation of ancient art through sage collecting and through the generosity he manifested to several collections throughout the country, said Maxwell L. Anderson, the director of the Emory University Museum of Art and Archeology in Atlanta. And he did it without fanfare or desire for recognition. He was a trustee of the museum for many years. Serving on the board's acquisition committee until he resigned last year. Always modest about his collecting, Mr. Schimmel once

The Portland Vase. The Extraordinary Odyssey of a Mysterious Roman Treasure” By Robin Brooks. Published in New York by Harper Collins in 2004. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The Portland Vase is a marvelous piece of ancient cameo glass. Intricately carved by modern standards, to say nothing of the problems it must have presented for ancient Roman glass carvers. Created for an Emperor, exhumed from a burial ground, coveted, traded, smashed, restored, and stuffed full of incident and intrigue, the Portland Vase- the most famous of all Roman antiquities- has captivated everyone who has come into contact with it. There was Fabrizio Lazzaro, the archeologist/tomb robber who discovered it, Pope Urban VIII who wanted to acquire it, the Princess of Palestrina who supported her gambling by selling it, the Duchess of Portland, ... morewho owned it in secret yet gave it a name, Josiah Wedgwood, whose intricate copies finished the job of immortalizing it, the madman who smashed it to bits, and the restorers who managed to piece it back together. all those figures, and more, dance across the glassy stage. ANCIENT ROMAN GREEK ETRUSCAN POTTERY - BIRCH 1858 -2 VOLUMES with COLORED PLATES
History of Ancient Pottery” By Samuel Birch. Published in London by John Murray in 1858. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first edition of what was the first comprehensive history of ancient pottery. Including Greek, Roman, Assyrian, Etruscan, and Egyptian work. Birch's work stood as the cornerstone of the literature on ancient ceramics for decades, and although now very dated, is still an interesting and informative study. In 1910. More than half a century after its first appearance, Solon wrote of it- It would be nothing short of presumption on our part to praise a work the immense value of which is acknowledged by all students of archaeology. All we can say is that, according to the opinion of the masters of the science, Birch's general history of ancient pottery has remained, up to this day, an unassailable ... moreauthority on most of the subjects that are treated by it. It condenses the substance of many volumes of difficult access and often still more difficult interpretation; all materials have been selected with judicious discrimination and classified with clearness and accuracy. DESCRIPTION: 2 volumes. 6"x9" 415& 437 pages, 12 color plates and hundreds of text illustrations. Bound in period dark green 3/4 leather with marbled boards and endpapers. Spines with raised bands, separated into five compartments with gilt titles and ancient vase decorations. CONDITION NOTES: Covers with moderate scuffing and a little wear. Some light internal soil. ANCIENT ROMAN COLCHESTER CAMULODUNUM POTTERY + POTTER KILN in PROVINCIAL CAPITOL
The Roman Potters' Kilns of Colchester” By M.R. Hull. Published in Oxford; printed at the University Press for The Society of Antiquaries in 1963. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A scholarly study of Roman-era excavated kiln sites and their contents. Both the kilns themselves and the pottery found there are illustrated and discussed. And the construction and use of ancient kilns is also addressed. This publication was the"Report of the Research Committee of The Society of Antiquaries of London, No.XXI" Soon after the Roman conquest of Britain in AD 43. A Roman legionary fortress was established at Colchester, named Camulodunum by the Romans. The city was a provincial capitol of Roman Britain, and contained a large and elaborate temple dedicated to Emperor Claudius. The city was sacked during Boudica's ... morerebellion in AD 61, but was rebuilt with massive walls and a chariot race arena. Dr. John Morris, an English historian who specialized in the Roman and Sub-Roman Empire in Britain, suggested in his book"The Age of Arthur" 1973) that, as the descendants of Romanised Britons looked back to a golden age of peace and prosperity under Rome, the name"Camelot" of Arthurian legend was probably a reference to Camulodunum, the capital of Britannia in Roman times. Ancient Roman Pompeii Silver & Frescoes -The House of Menander -Rare 1933 Book
La Casa del Menandro e il suo Tesoro de Argenteria” By Amedeo Maiuri. Published in Rome by La Libreria dello Stato in 1933. Limited to 480 copies. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An important study of the frescoes. Architecture, and silver of a grand Pompeian villa known as'The House of Menander' Built in the first century B.C. and named after a well-preserved fresco of the ancient Greek poet found there, little is known of the actual owner of the house, though it seems likely that he was either a wealthy Pompeian merchant, or perhaps a rich Roman who built a seaside villa in the popular resort town. The author of this important study. Amedeo Maiuri[1886-1963] has been described as one of the most dynamic and controversial archeologists to oversee the excavations in Pompeii. He was one of the first to employ a ... morerigorously systematic and scientific approach, instead of viewing the ruins as a treasure heap to be plundered; unfortunately many of his excavations suffered from under-funding and inadequate tools, and his legacy remains mixed. There is no controversy, however, about the importance of the silver hoard that was uncovered in the basement of the Casa del Menandro in 1930. In the cellar. Wrapped up in textiles and placed in the bottom of a wooden chest, were 118 pieces of silver plate, of varying ages and styles. a separate box placed on top of the silverware contained 20 pieces of jewellery made of gold and precious stones, along with some gold wire and 46 coins. writes John Tamm in his review of the book"The Insula of the Menander at Pompeii. Vol. IV: The Silver Treasure" by Kenneth Painter(2001) As Painter rightly notes" Tamm continues, the importance of this treasure lies not only in the artifacts, but also in the fact that they were properly excavated, a statement that cannot be made for the other major find from the area, the Boscoreale treasure. Just as this treasure has long been of prime importance for the Roman silverware specialist, so too has been

Ancient Roman Glass in Slovenia - Slovenian Glass in Roman Era
The Roman Glass of Slovenia/ Rimsko Steklo Slovenije” By Irena Lazar. Published in Ljubljana by Zalozba ZRC in 2003. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An important and very scholarly study. Featuring a number of unpublished examples of glass. The first part is dedicated to the typological and chronological presentation of the Roman glass(1st-5th cent. from the territory of modern Slovenia; the second one is a presentation and review of local glass production in the Roman period on Slovene territory. The introduction represents the terminology that is used and glass making techniques. Along with results of the most resent research. The products are first classified into three major groups based on the technique of manufacture(vessels made in a mould, mould-blown vessels, free-blown vessels) The material is further classified ... moreinto ten groups of vessels according to their use. The dating of individual forms was wherever possible determined on the basis of grave units and other dated contexts from Slovenian sites. Local glass industry existed in Roman period on the territory of modern Slovenia from the 2nd century onwards and lasted, as proved by the finds from Celeia and Poetovio, through the 2nd and 3rd century. The most extensive discoveries are known from Poetovio, where the proofs of glass production are known from different parts of the town(Hajdina, Rabel_ja vas, Panorama) The remains of six glass furnaces and glass waste prove the existence of glass production and enable the reconstruction of the appearance of the glass furnaces. Judging from the remains of the glass products, the furnaces in Ptuj must have operated in the 2nd and 3rd centuries" English/Slovene text. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5"x12" 252 pages, line and color illustrations, plus 8 plates of line drawings, 4 folding plates. CONDITION NOTES: Minor wear. But otherwise clean and nice, with a tight binding. OVERSEAS BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: Our International shipping charges are based on the weight. When

3 Ancient Arts Books: Greek Statuary, Venus de Milo, Roman Portland Vase
Three Books on Ancient Art- DISCUSSION: This lot consists of: Greek Beauty" by Berenice Geoffroy-Schneiter(Assouline: 2003) Goddess. Showing both the fascination and repulsion, eroticism and damnation, this small work in pictures offers a synthesis of art and ... morebeauty through what is perhaps the most inspired period of all times: ancient Greece. Hardcover. 6.5"x9" 79 pages, color illustrations, dust jacket. Fine condition. Disarmed. The Story of the Venus de Milo" by Gregory Curtis(Alfred A. Knopf: 2003) The Venus de Milo is both a great work of art and a popular icon. And from the moment of her discovery in 1820 by a French naval ensign, she has been an object of aesthetic and archeological controversy. Using memoirs, letters, and official accounts, Gregory Curtis introduces readers to Venus as she was unearthed by a farmer, digging for marble building blocks on the Aegean island of Melos at the moment a young officer and amateur archeologist looking for classical relics happened by. Curtis tells how the island's elders fought with their Turkish overlords over who owned Venus, and how the French pressed their claim, outwitting other suitors to bring her to the Louvre, where she became an immediate celebrity. Curtis's depiction of Europe in the early 19th century, caught in the grip of a classical art mania, reveals just how far the Louvre was prepared to go to prove it had the greatest classical find of the er
