Thousands of ceramics, all scanned and in pdf documents on one DVD. Volume One is 258 pages and contains an article on the shipwreck and discovery. As well as the first part of the sale, covering barbed rim dishes, pouring vessels, bottles, jars, and enameled dishes. Volume Two is 344 pages and like volume one is full colour and illustrates examples of every ceramic piece from the sale. Covering shipware and concretions, blue and white dishes, bowls and cups, figural ceramics, boxes, and a comprehensive bibliography on the history and collecting of these pieces. This has been scanned from the original catalogues. Nice set with 11 pieces of Celadon and Blue&White Ceramic. Tek Sing Web Info In 1822 the Tek Sing junk sank in Indonesian waters. Carrying hundreds of thousands of pieces of Chinese porcelain; not to mention some 1,600 passengers and crew who lost their lives. Recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher, some 350,000 pieces were subsequently offered by Nagel's auction house in Germany. Some time later, more pieces were sold at Webb's Auctions in Auckland. These treasure troves of Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese ceramics, have up until this point, been unsystematic ally studied and rarely published. This book addresses this issue with the author tracing the development and fluctuations of the international ceramic trade between China and Southeast Asia focusing specifically on the 14th-15th centuries, a period known in ceramic scholarship as the Ming Gap. The term Ming Gap arose to describe the ban placed on the export of Chinese ceramics by the Ming Dynasty. In 1822. China was a mighty, but declining, maritime nation. The economy was gradually being crippled by a nationwide addiction to opium, which was imported by European merchants. The port of Amoy had been central to the country’s trading prowess. It was here that a large junk– the Tek Sing. Or True Star– was moored. Bound for Jakarta. She was loaded with precious cargo: porcelain, silks, spices, and medicines. There was so much cargo that some was even strapped to the outside of the ship’s hull! There were also some ... more1600 emigrants on board who were searching for a better life working on the sugar plantations of Java. Unlike the wealthy merchants accompanying their cargo. These peasants did not have cabins. Instead. They slept out on the deck, exposed to the elements in extremely cramped conditions. Tek Sing was a huge ship for her time– well over a thousand tons. Nevertheless. She was dangerously overloaded– the slightest mishap could lead to a catastrophic loss of life. After nearly a month of sailing. The captain of the Tek Sing decided to try a short cut through the Gaspar Straits– an area that had not yet been thoroughly charted. This was not the usual tried and tested route. However.
