Gold coinage was introduced by King Croesus of Lydia in the sixth century B.C. a revolutionary concept in international trade. By 325 B.C. the Greeks were mining gold from Gibraltar to Asia Minor. And trading for gold with the Phoenician/Carthaginians, Scythians, and Dacians. After the conquest Roman conquest of Greece and the Hellenic world gold artisans of Greece migrated to early Rome where they produced Greek style jewelry. The Vaugondys were well respected for the detail and accuracy of their maps. They were known for making excellent use of the considerable resources available in 18th century Paris to produce the most accurate and fantasy-free maps possible. The Vaugondys compiled their maps based upon their own superior geographic knowledge, scholarly research, the journals of contemporary explorers and missionaries, and direct astronomical observation. 1867 Hughes Map of Egypt and Germany in Antiquity WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Arabia Petraea and Part of Egypt including ... morethe Delta. Germania Magna with the Provinces on the Upper Danube. Description: This is an unusual 1867 map by William Hughes featuring Egypt and Germany in antiquity. Essentially two maps on a single sheet. The top map focuses on Egypt, including the Sinai Peninsula. This map, centered on the Nile Valley, identifies the sites of ancient towns, villages, pyramids(including the Pyramids near Memphis) and lakes. It features both ancient and contemporary place names for each destination- an invaluable resource for scholars of antiquity. The map depicts the supposed course of the wandering of the Israelites following the Exodus, as they fled out of Egypt, across the Red Sea, and subsequently spent the next forty years wandering in the Sinai before migrating into the Promised Land by crossing the Jordan River just north of the Dead Sea. Possibly this map's most interesting aspect is its presentation of the ancient Lake Moeris, now just a small lake called Birket Qarun, and the legendary'Labyrinth' near modern day Hawara. The lost Labyrinth was described by many classical authors including Herodotus, Strabo, Diodorus and Pliny. A sprawling megalithic complex designed by Imandes for the Pharoh Amenemhet III, the Labyrinth is believed to have contained thousands of rooms filled with hieroglyphs and ancient Egyptian sculptures. Several archeological surveys have been undertaken to unearth the labyrinth, but so far no findings have been confirmed. The lower map features ancient Germany. The map covers the lands of the Germanic peoples prior to the fall of the Roman Empire from modern day Denmark to Switzerland and from Belgium to Poland. This particular map focuses on the regions of Germania Magna(Greater Germany) which resisted all attempts at Roman rule. At the time, Germania' was a name given to the lands between the Alps and the Baltic Sea. The region w

NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In the world of the ancient Mediterranean(including the Greeks. Romans, Persians, Hebrews, and the various Indo-European Celtic tribes) priests and sorcerers honored the sapphire above all other gems, believing that sapphire enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. Medieval sorcerers believed that sapphire enabled them to hear and understand the most obscure oracles. Not only did sapphire help to get in touch with astral and psychic realms, but the stone also provided protection for those who took those journeys. On the flip side, Medieval populations believed that wearing a sapphire as a talisman was an antidote to black magic and effects of evil spirits, and provided protection against sorcery. It was believed to banish evil spirits and send negative spells back to the sender. Sapphires have been since ancient times one of the most highly valued of all gemstones, and references to the gemstone date back to about 800 B.C. Here's a gorgeous. Sparkling, delicately hued pastel pumpkin-amber orange sapphire from the fabulous Ural Mountains of Russia. This particular gemstone was hand cut and faceted into a briolette teardrop, an old fashioned cut reflecting its heritage.
