TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Chinese Bronzes by Mario Bussagli. ... moreNOTE: We have 75.000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well(some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions) If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Softcover. UK) Littlehampton(1974) 158 pages. The origins of bronze-working in China are mysterious and deeply rooted in ancient Chinese myths. Metallurgy in all its forms seemed miraculous to the ordinary man. And every object, sword or vessel, was thought to possess a spirit of its own. Those who worked with metals seemed to be wizards with supernatural powers, all the more so because the melting operation was preceded, accompanied, and followed by religious ceremonies, exorcism, and magic rites. Mario Bussagli describes the background to the production of Chinese bronzes in fascinating detail. And explains the significance of the different types of ritual vessel and the symbolism of the stylized decoration. The fine illustrations include objects from the Shang, Chou, Han and T'ang periods, and each is described fully in the accompanying notes. CONDITION: LIKE NEW. Unread oversized softcover(and in that sense"new" UK) Littlehampton(1974) 158 pages. Unblemished except for VERY slight edge and corner shelf wear to the covers. Pages are pristine; clean. Migeon's 1878 map of Turkey in Asia and the Caucuses. Migeon's map covers from the Crimea south to Egypt. West as far as the Aegean, and east to the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf. The map essentially covers the mid-19th century claims of the Ottoman Empire, including the modern nations of Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, Jordan, Israel or Palestine, Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, with parts of adjacent Iran, Greece, Egypt and Ukraine. The lower left quadrant includes a beautiful illustration of Smyrne(the ancient city of Smyrna) The map dates to the last days of the Ottoman Empire, whose influence, though rapidly declining, dominated much of the Middle East. Various rivers, islands, mountain passes and other topographical features are identified. Migeon’s Geographie Universelle, published in Paris, is one of the last great decorative atlases of the 19th century. It contains many stylistic elements of early 19th century cartography such as full hand coloring, numerous decorative vignettes, and high quality paper. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Ruby was greatly valued in the Medieval Arab world. There are many references to ruby in ancient Arabic literature. Including a noteworthy treatise by the 11th century Arab scholar Al-Biruni. Throughout Medieval Central Asia, the Near East, and China ruby was used to ornament armor, scabbards, and harnesses of noblemen. Rubies were laid beneath the foundation of buildings to secure good fortune to the structure. In Elsewhere in Medieval Europe ruby was priced eight times higher than diamond. There ruby was worn as a talisman, as it was believed that the stone darkened when danger was near and then return to its original color when the danger was past. Ruby was also thought to be an antidote to poisoning as well, and to protect the wearer from lightening, plagues, poison, sorrow, and evil spirits. Here's a very nice quality 19th century antique hand faceted“emerald” cut ruby. The cut is also sometimes referred to as an“octagon” within the trade. Hand crafted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Originally used in indigenous jewelry. This sparkling precious gemstone is transparent, eye clean, with a highly desirable deep red color, vibrant character, and wonderful fiery, brilliant red flashes.
